Museum staff curator Michael Trotter curated and designed the exhibition in conjunction with guest curator legendary Z-boy Nathan Pratt and advisory committee members Jeff Ho, Skip Engblom (Zephyr co-founders), Cris Dawson (1966 Hobie Champ), Z-Boys Tony Alva and Stacy Peralta, and 1980s world champion Christian Hosoi. The exhibition traces the evolution of boards from pre-1950 to the present showcasing the riders, designers, artists, and manufacturers that created the California phenomenon known as the skateboard. From the first planks of wood with metal roller skate wheels nailed to the bottom to the modern polyurethane wheels and kicktails, the boards have rocketed the skaters to greater heights of performance and style while taking sidewalk surfing from a homegrown activity to a worldwide cultural phenomenon. More than 300 rare boards from the worlds finest collections including the Skatelab, South Bay Skates, Santa Barbara Surf Museum, Ray Flores, Steve Slayer and Dale Smith collections will illustrate the timeline of skate history. Photographs and art by C.R. Stecyk III, Glen E. Friedman, Warren Bolster, Craig Fineman, Cesario Block Montana, Wynn Miller, Kevin Ancell, Mike McKee, Wes Humpston and more document the movement and its personalities. This is the first exhibition of the California skate movement to be shown in Dog Town, the Santa Monica/Ocean Park area where modern skateboarding was born and the skate became an art form. The California Heritage Museum is located in the vortex at Main Street and Ocean Park Boulevard. A full series of events, including film screenings of Dogtown and Z-Boys, Skater Dater and Rising Son: The Christian Hosoi Story, will take place at the museum and the downtown Santa Monica Library. The Front Room Gallery is pleased to present Fuse Works: Multiples and Editions, an exhibition of new work by both veteran Fuse Works artists and newly discovered talents.

Fuse Works grew out of the Front Room’s multiples and editions program which began in early 2007. Dedicated to presenting artists who approach the editioned work as a field of artistic discourse and inquiry rather than simple mass marketing, Fuse Works has assembled an extensive catalog of multiples and editions representing a diverse group of artists and a wide range of approaches. December’s exhibition will present all-new work by both veteran Fuse Works artists and newly discovered talents.

Fuse Works defines the term 'multiple' to denote a work of art that is produced in quantity. An artist may have these works mass-produced, but may also produce each piece him/herself so that there is some variation between examples. Usually a multiple is smaller and more affordable than unique artwork. An editioned work, on the other hand, is produced so that there is no variation between examples (i.e. a photographic print, lithograph, etc.) Books, objects, photographs, works on paper, video, audio and digital art are all included in this exhibition.

“Art is not money” Sean Landers wrote not long ago. Recent events involving credit default swaps and mortgage derivatives have begun to suggest that money is not money either. Artists have noticed, and some of the artists in this exhibition have responded by making currency the subject of their artwork as well as the vehicle for its exchange. Double A projects (Athena Robles and Anna Stein), for instance, have produced One World Currency--a global currency created in conjunction with the first Global Free Store (2009). The bills can be purchased from Fuse Works, or can be obtained by exchanging goods or services with either the gallery or the artist. Lotte Lindner & Till Steinbrenner have produced a screen print resembling paper money in an edition of 1000. The first print in the edition is offered at $1, the second at $2...the final bill in the edition $1000. In this it seems that the dispersal of the full edition resembles a simple but audacious ponzi scheme, but one that bears a resemblance to the standard pricing of editions by print galleries. John O. Smith has devised a similar scheme in the production of his book project Currency Exchange. Smith began by binding one dollar bills into handsome hardbound books in an edition of ten. Proceeds of the sale of Vol. I were rolled over to create the edition of Vol. II which consists of bound editions of two dollar bills. Vol. II will generate Vol. V and so on. The value of the project will continue to appreciate until all common denominations of US currency have been exchanged into artist book form. For this exhibition Fuse Works will offer Volume II at no mark-up thus preserving the conceptual integrity of the Currency Exchange project. Other artists who engage the almighty Dollar/Yen/Pound/Euro are Marshall Reese and Nora Ligorano who have produced Dough-Yos, a limited edition yo-yo.

Another subject explored by artists in this exhibition is the concept of time. Though time seems more intangible than money, it has been mined and refined by Chiara Camoni. Her piece “10 days” offers time for sale. The time in question has lain unclaimed for centuries: 10 days excised from the Gregorian calendar by Pope Gregory XIII. With the help of a notary Camoni took possession of the 10 days and offers to bestow them on collectors. Celeste Fichter’s “Time Stamp” is a simple reminder of our changing relationship to time and it’s measurement. Fichter has produced a rubber ink stamp reading “time” and instructs the collector to stamp it on the wrist--the former location of many a wrist watch, since replaced by the ubiquitous cell phone. Andrew Eyman’s Shell Beach, an installation and multiple, reminds us that clocks and watches merely represent an abstract concept. The multiple offered here is a wristwatch in which the face and works have been replaced with colorful sand--evoking the utopian paradise of the title. Dominick DiPietrantonio’s has made clocks that dance stunning patterns across their faces, but they do not tell you the time.

Some of the artists in the exhibition create transactional artwork--work that requires the collector to interact with the artwork (or in some cases the artist) beyond simply purchasing it. James Leonard’s lenticular post card “Greetings from America” is one such case. Once purchased, the card is sent to the collector through regular post with a personal note from the artist. Chuck Jones offers a mash-up video of all of the Star Wars movies in packages of three. The purchaser is required to give 2 of the copies away to friends. Other pieces in the show are wearable, including work by Serge Onnen and Jan Obornik.

The exhibition also includes artists who have produced books (Luca Bertolo, Robert Flynt, Christian Brown), works on paper & photographs (Sara Sun, Patricia Smith, David Kramer, Ross Racine, Gregory Curry, Heidi Cody, Alison Unsworth), video (Matt Richards, Stephanie Koseff) and objects (Rebecca Loyche, Oscar Perez, George Spencer, John Marriott).

Ignite was started in Seattle in 2006 by Brady Forrest of O’Reilly Radar and Bre Pettis of Make. Since then hundreds of five minute talks have been given across the world. Besides Seattle, there are thriving Ignite communities in Portland, Sydney, NYC and a lot more.
The idea is simple: presenters are required to stick to a rigid format of 20 slides, each of which changes automatically after 15 seconds, ensuring that each presentation is exactly 5 minutes long. The format forces presenters to think long and hard about every slide.
Presentation topics are diverse, and range from technology, travel, personal hobbies and passions and the arts.

On Sunday November 15th from 3pm-5pm there will be a christian talent show that is open to the public at the Dothan Civic Center! There will be a children and adults division with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes for both divisions! Prizes include gift certificates from popular eateries, businesses, and even a 2 day/2 night stay at a condo at Gulf Shores! There isn't any age range set for as long as you can show us your talent! We welcome all those who would like to participate in this event! However, there will be a donation of $5 per child and $10 per adult in order to participate. The donation will be split between the 2 ministries who are doing this event, His Fortress Ministries and OverComers In Christ Ministries. The donation price doesn't include the cover charge to get into the building, which is $5, unless you bring 5 nonperishible food items to negate the cover charge.

Local comic legend Sean Donnelly and the Don’t Touch Me There crew (Blaine Perry and Pat Stango) present a marathon show that will be the closest most comedians will ever come to participating in a marathon- it’s Lil’ Seany Is Up All Night! On December 5th, come to Ochi’s Lounge to see a very special 4+ hour edition of the very popular Lil' Seany Show.
The awesome line-up will serve as a celebration of the best of NYC's comedy scene and of the holiday season. To kick off the festival, Geja’s will host a special tasting open to the public featuring seven uniquely delicious Champagnes from Piper Heidiesk on Sunday, December 6th. The tasting begins at 1:00 p.m. and is $30 per person; space is limited.

The following day, Monday, December 7th, Geja’s will pair four Piper Heidiesk champagnes with their famous fondue. The Dinner will be $50.00 per person and includes tastings of Piper Heidiesk champagne, Geja’s Creamy Cheese Fondue, Luscious Beef Tenderloin and Chicken Breast Fondue, and Flaming Chocolate Fondue (tax and gratuity are also included). Florens-Luis Heidsieck, the son of a Lutheran minister, starting making wine in 1780 and through dedication and hard work was able to set up his own house in July of 1785. After his death in 1828 the business was taken over by his nephew Christian Heidsieck and his cousin Henri Guilaume Piper to form the Piper-Heidsieck Champagne house. Piper-Heidsieck Champagne has been associated with fame and fortune throughout the House’s existence. During the 19th century fourteen Royal and Imperial courts made the House their official supplier and in the modern day, Piper-Heidsieck is the official Champagne of the Cannes film festival and the Oscars.

In the United States today, small businesses constitute about one-half of the private economy in terms of output and jobs, but they receive almost no investment from the nation’s pension funds or from mutual, hedge, venture, or any other kind of investment funds. In a well-functioning financial system, roughly one-half of the investment should go to roughly one-half of the economy.

We will begin the evening with a presentation about one of the primary causes for this market failure: the legal barriers to raising capital that disproportionately burden small businesses.

Next we will discuss some cutting edge strategies that have been used to overcome these barriers.

We will conclude with a discussion of legislative changes needed to address the barriers to capital-raising for small business and the formation of a working group to move the agenda forward.
