Jul 16, 2009: Perpetual Groove at Rhythm & Brews

This quartet from Savannah, GA has a long list of accolades named one of the top ten bands to watch in 2005 by Relix magazine, they performed to over 20,000 people at Bonnaroo, have made appearances at High Sierra, Wakarusa, 10,000 Lakes, The Blue Ridge Harvest Fest, Atlanta's Music Midtown, Xingolati and been have selling out the Georgia Theatre since New Years Eve 04, and the list goes on and on. Perpetual Groove throws down a funky blend of reggae, tribal-style trance rhythms, heavy funk, jazzy improvisation and synth loops, intertwined with inspiring and sentimental lyrics. Their high energy and meticulous craftsmanship keep their songs fresh, danceable, and surprising. All This Everything (Harmonized Records 2004), produced and recorded by Robert Hannon (OutKast) launched the band out of their home in the dirty south and onto the National radar. And their first release, Sweet Oblivious Antidote (Harminized Records 2003), was voted the top fan pick by The Home Grown Music Network and remains a constant sellar. Through constant innovation, PGroove, as they are known to their fans everywhere, never fail to bring something new to the live concert experience, be it a retina blinding light show or their experimentations with live 5.1 surround sound, each show provides something for everyone. In just under four years, Perpetual Groove has taken the live music scene by storm and continues to add new fans to their already large base of converts.
Aug 5, 2009: Phish Mountain View at Shoreline Amphitheater

This is your chance to see one of the great rock bands of the late 80's early 90's on Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at 7:00 PM at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, CA.

Click here for best deals on Phish tickets – Mountain View, California!

If there is one thing no one could ever accuse Phish of, it is laziness. The band is infamous for its persistent touring schedule, which is for the most part how they became so well recognized in the first place. Travelling from college campus to college campus, their irreverent sense of humor and amazing music added many new fans into the blend.

Phish is recognized for their astonishing live jams and a deep fondness for their fans (who are all dearly patriotic to the band). The band's funky, jazzy ad-libbed sets are coming your way shortly.

Jul 11, 2009: SALTED (Miguel Migs / Julius Papp / Fred Everything / Jay-J) at Mighty

About Julius Papp

Julius Papp is a house music producer and DJ whose roots lie in Disco of the ’70s and New Wave of the ’80s.

He blends various styles together (including Latin, Afro, Disco, Jazz) with such fluidity that it is difficult at times to put a defining stamp on his sound. Contributing to that is his willingness to take a chance. He always tries to push the envelope by introducing music that may or may not go over well, but feels deserves the exposure. He takes his audience on a musical journey with various mood and energy changes.

About Miguel Migs

Miguel Migs stands at the forefront of electronic music's soulful realm. Whether tackling his original productions or remixes, he achieves an organic-soulful sound by combining the best of both the electronic music world and live instrumentation.

For many years, Miguel's productions have been included on countless compilations and his records have slid into the crates of top DJs across the globe. His music has also landed on numerous TV Shows, including Six Feet Under, Sex in the City, and MTV's Road Rules and Real World.

Contrary to many of his club-centric DJ/producer peers, Miguel is not always concerned with the potential dance floor appeal of his soulful tracks. "It's music you can enjoy and listen to at home, in the club, or anywhere. Not necessarily just to rock the dance floor." explains the Northern California native, who grew up with a true love of reggae, soul, classic rock, jazz, hip-hop and just about everything else.

About Fred Everything

usic And With 12 Years In The Music Business And Over 100 Productions To His Credit, He Shows No Signs Of Stopping. Born In Hull And Raised In Quebec City, Fred Got The Early Bug For Electronic Music In High School. He Formed A Few Bands While Spending His Weekends As One Of The Youngest In Local Nightclubs. In The Early 90s, He Started Playing Live In Raves And Clubs In Canada. He Was Then Known As “Everything,” Because His Live Sets Could Range Anywhere From Techno To House, Ambient And Even Drum And Bass. He Even Got To Open Up For A Then Up And Coming, Sasha. Tired Of Carrying His Equipment Around, Mainly A TR909 And A SH101, He Started DJ’ng And Changed His Name To Fred Everything. A Move To The Big City Of Montreal Was The Next Obvious Thing, And It Wasn’t Too Long After That Fred Found Himself Releasing Records On Some Of His Favorite Labels And Catching The Attention Of DJ’s And Producers Worldwide.

About Jay-J

Jay-J is undoubtedly a legend in House Music. Spanning a career with over 150 releases, he’s won a Grammy® nomination, had his own Coke® bottle for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, DJ’d the 2006 MTV® AVMAs and launched two comp series for Defected. Jay-J’s syndicated radio show, “Live From…”, allows fans to “join him live from” his gigs worldwide, showcasing the latest tracks from his signature, Funky House/West Coast sound. As a producer, you’ll see his name on the biggest releases from Moulton Studios, OM, Naked Music and Defected. He’s remixed artists from Jill Scott to Joss Stone and has collaborated with producers from Kaskade to Miguel Migs.
Jul 10, 2009: Screening - Rock That Uke w/ Ukulele Loki's Gadabout Orchestra Live (from Denver) at The Guild Theater

Friday, July 10
7 PM and 9:30 PM
The Guild Theater. 2828 35th St (corner of 35th & Broadway), Sacramento
Admission: $5.00

Rock That Uke will be accompanied by a live performance by Ukulele Loki's Gadabout Orchestra (from Denver) on Friday (only) at 8 PM!
Also, in attendance will be director William Preston Robertson, who has also lent his voice to numerous Coen Brothers films and authored the definitive book on the Coen Brothers, "The Big Lebowski: The Making of a Coen Brothers Film!"

So. You can see the movie at 7 and hang around for Ukulele Loki's performance at 8 PM, or come to see Ukulele Loki at 8 PM and stay for the second screening. Again, Ukulele Loki and William Preston Robertson will only be there on Friday night.

About Rock That Uke:

A funky, curiously philosophical cinematic love poem that examines the near mystical allure of the four-stringed underdog of the musical world and the recent surge of alternative, post-punk musicians on the American mainland who have taken up the instrument, and have incorporated the ukulele not just into their raucous and irreverent original compositions, but into a counter cultural, post-punk ethos. With introductory narration by Academy Award winner Holly Hunter. Featuring Carmaig de Forest, Songs From a Random House, Janet Klein, Ukefink, Robert Armstrong, Travis Harrelson, Oliver Brown (No Kill I: The Next Generation), Heinous Rynes, Uke Til U Puke, The Haoles, Williwaw, Frank Novicki, Robert Wheeler, King Kukulele, Pineapple Princess, The Rumble Pups, and Ian Whitcomb!

About Ukulele Loki's Gadabout Orchestra

A Denver based 6 piece chamber-pop band that features ukulele, tuba, trombone, clarinet, glockenspiel, drums, and synth. Adjectives that have been used to describe the band include: sepia-chord, indie-pan alley, and melancholy Brechtian carnival rock.

The Gadabout Orchestra is a Denver favorite, having headlined many major venues and supported The Dresden Dolls, Chairlift, Devotchka, and many others.

Bandleader Aaron "Loki" Johnson has also toured the country as a burlesque/cirque/sideshow MC. "Loki" Johnson has worked beside sword swallowers, a fire breathing Midget, and has emceed for Dita Von Teese, among others.

Jul 22, 2009: EntropyFunk funk, soul, reggae R&B! at The Caspar Inn

Funky is about the injustices, the things that go wrong, the hungry kids going to school trying to learn. Funky is about what it takes to make people move - take it from the gospel, from the jazz. -- James Brown.

The sexiest blend of old and new school funk happening in the south today, "Entropy distills the essence of funk into its own infectious brew". Based out of Atlanta, Entropy began as an instrumental trio in 1999, gaining steady recognition over the next two years for their high-energy performances. The addition of Rod Williams in '01 enhanced the dynamic and creative scope of the band, propelling them to new heights of soul, R&B, rap, and of course the super heavy funk. Later, the additions of Jailan Jagne and Hawk Harvey on alto and tenor saxes brought the budding sound into full bloom.

Influenced by the traditions of James Brown, Parliament/Funkadelic, Prince, Eric B. & Ra Kim, and countless others, Entropy remains dedicated to bringing potent live performances and laying down slick, funky, sultry grooves in the studio. They have shared the stage and collaborated with a wide array of local, regional, and national talent, including Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, Kofi Burbridge, Robert Walter's 20th Congress, Vinyl, Carlos Washington & Giant People, Sound Tribe Sector Nine, The Greyhounds, Big Fuzz, DJ le Spam & the Spam Allstars, Ulu, Yonrico Scott Band, Jeff Sipe, DJ ..5, Squat, and Genetic.

Over the past few years Entropy's fanbase has been growing and growing. Touring extensively in the southeast in '02 and '03 the band built a formidable reputation in its existing markets of Atlanta, Athens, Augusta, and Savannah for "the blistering energy of the live show" and their true funk sound. In '04 and '05 they spread the funk to Tenessee, Alabama, Florida, the Carolinas, and New Orleans (Jazz Fest '04 and '05) to packed dance floors of party people shakin' it all night long. Crowd response was enthusiastic to say the least, the people seemed almost starved for the funk.

Entropy took it upon themselves to satisfy the fans' appetites by playing over 250 shows in '04 and '05, building a strong following everywhere they went. This funk frenzy was in support of their debut studio album, LIVE+REBEL+FUNK+LOVE, released in September 2004. Entropy has been recognized as an emerging funk-force to be reckoned with, illustrated by the 2002 Flagpole Award for Best Soul/Funk Band (Athens, GA) and most recently in 2006 for Creative Loafing's "Best R&B/Soul/Funk Act-Reader's Pick" (Atlanta, GA) . Currently, the band is in the trenches spreading the funk and promoting their sophmore release, released February 2007. Look for a new album in 2009, plus tours into brand new areas of the country!

Jul 25, 2009: Bumpus, soul, alternative, pop - live from Chicago! at Caspar Inn

It was the late 90's and apartments were cheap in Chicago's Rogers Park. Actually, I believe they still are. But back then they were the cheapest in town, and quite a few college-aged kids swarmed into the neighborhood as a result. Some went to Loyola, some to Northwestern, some dropped out and got mediocre jobs at cafés and such, and some seemed to party for a living (which is good work if you can get it).

Like college-aged kids the world over, most of them were extraordinarily interested in music. We were no different. The apartment I shared with a couple of other guys on Pratt avenue became a sort of hub for listening to weird music, watching strange independent movies, smoking what in retrospect seems like a never-ending tsunami of cigarettes, and indulging in the most popular iniquities available. Nothing too crazy, just the usual booze and such for the most part. There are some great stories from those days.

I can't remember who brought it over, but one afternoon somebody put on a Sly and the Family Stone record. Most of the time when you consider these moments in retrospect, you tend to exaggerate how you reacted at the time to something that would later turn out to be important. But I remember quite clearly that upon our very first listen we freaked the hell out. It was so... perfect. I mean, each song had huge, glaring imperfections, but somehow they came together to form something much greater than the sum of it's parts. We fell in love with it, and spent the better part of the next ten years trying to figure out how to do what Sly had done so seemingly effortlessly back in the 70's.

Our timing was very good. It just so happens that the whole country had gotten into a 70's retro phase around then, and as a result we were able to book shows around town without too much trouble even though we were just terrible back then. None of us really knew how to play yet, and we lacked the experience to understand that being sloppy is only cool when you are able to project to the audience that you could have done it right if you had wanted to. It took us some years to hone the music into what we were hoping for, but the audiences we encountered were very forgiving, and in time we got the hang of it.

We began traveling. It turned out that there were a lot of clubs all over the midwest that really enjoyed what we were doing. Many folks wanted to dance, and we provided an alternative to the Alternative bands that were moping their way across the country, leaving everybody feeling so-so. 70's retro had made way for indecisive ennui in the public forum, but for some reason the crowds gave us a pass. Except for Rockford. They freakin' hated us in Rockford.

When we finally made it all the way out to New York it worked out so well that we've tried to get back at least once a year since, even though the drive has almost killed us all on a couple of occasions, most notably in an incident involving a heavy trailer and black ice. It's amazing we didn't all die. Instead, except for a few bumps and bruises, all was well. We even finished the tour.

As our name got out there, we started to get offered some really great shows. At one point we got the chance to open for Maceo Parker. For those unfamiliar, he was James Brown's saxophonist for many years, and he's without question one of the funkiest men alive. He invited us up to dance on stage with him at the show, which we did, so whatever else happens I can die a happy man. Other folks we've had the wonderful luck to open for along the way have been (in no particular order): War (yes, they played lowrider), the Roots (?uestlove is even better live), Dr. John (at House of Blues, which was tons of fun), Jurrasic 5 (before we knew who they were actually, and boy did they rock), and just recently in the summer of '08 we were on a bill with the one and only Bob Dylan at the Aspen Snowmass Jazz Festival. To my knowledge, there is no jazz at that jazz festival, by the way. But as festivals go, and we've played a ton of them all across the country, I can safely say it rules.

Now we're making it all the way out west as well, with shows in parts of California, so I guess it's fair to say we've covered the country coast to coast. People still seem to enjoy what we're doing, and we finally feel like we're playing the kind of music we set out to play, which is probably the most important thing to us. Our most recent record, All the People, is really the first record we've ever made that sounds like what we set out to do in the first place. And the record we're gearing up to make... Well, we'll see, but it's looking like we may be even closer to getting it right. It's funny, though. Now that we're actually able to make stuff that sounds kind of like Sly, we usually don't. We found our own identity at some point along the way, and now we don't have to try to be like anything else, really. Which is nice.

Aug 29, 2009: Orgone @ Neumos at Neumo's

Orgone Los Angeles
Funk / Soul / Afro-beat

or·gone (ôr’gōn)
n. A universal life force, a cosmic unit of energy, the creative force in nature.
Los Angeles based band Orgone is many souls with a cosmic connection, a natural creative force and musicians who have played together for years. They are self schooled and continue to shape their musical voice as a solid unit of guys who hang, spin records and jam out their shared inspirations. With a rooted sense of funk, soul, afrobeat, deep rhythms and an intimate understanding of dj culture as well as each others’ individual talents, Orgone seamlessly slides through multiple styles and dynamic performances. The group continuously injects whatever they play with a heavy brand of raw funk power.
At the core of the band is a rhythm section comprised of close friends who have played together for more than 10 years. Having grown artistically as a unit they function as one organic and intuitive whole. The orginal 5-member band started out by putting their own gritty takes on tunes by the likes of the JBs, the Meters, Booker T. and the MGs, Grant Green and Funkadelic among many others. They quickly gained underground respect and die hard fans. With their searing live sets and original instrumentals, Orgone soon released their debut self titled CD, “Orgone,” in 2002. The result was a collection of all original down home, transcendental, tough and gritty funk instrumentals.
The band fast grew to include a powerful three-piece horn section and a fiery soul singer who all shared the same spirit and deep reverence for the music that inspired them. Singer, Fanny Franklin, joined the groups’ recordings after they were floored seeing her perform with Dakah, the 30-piece hip hop orchestra, and asked her to record with them. Their first recording together, Orgone’s cover of “Funky Nassau”, became a ubiquitous DJ fave worldwide- first appearing on 7”(Nuff Rope) and then getting a 12” club re-edit by renowned dj Danny Krivit (Nuff Rope). It then appeared on Ubiquity’s Rewind Volume 4 comp, which began the band’s relationship with the prestigious label.
Gaining worldwide recognition for their raw studio recordings and exciting live sets led to the release of “The Killion Floor” on Ubiquity records- a full length album of hard hitting afro-soul & funk from the 9 piece band. While enjoying comparisons to classic acts like Rufus, War & Mandrill, or modern funk staples like Sharon Jones or Breakestra, they’re quick to point out that Orgone is unique.
“We draw from a wide musical and production palette … it’s a reflection of the music and production aesthetics that we love.”
Orgone backs this up by taking the listener on a musical journey from the sound of Los Angeles to horn and percussion driven Lagos to a New York club and to the raw sounds of New Orleans. The title of the album “The Killion Floor” is derived from the Orgone apartment/studio facility where the majority of the album was recorded. Singer Franklin delivers monster performances on tracks like the Memphis-drenched “Who Knows Who,” the laid-back and cosmic “Said and Done,” and the apocalyptic sound of “Do Your Thing”. The album also features guest appearances by singer Noelle Scaggs (from the Rebirth), trumpeter/arranger Todd Simon (Dapkings, Antibalas, CPK, Breakestra), and guitarist/producer Dan Ubick (CPK/ Lions).
The band’s reputation amongst the funk, soul, and hip hop fraternity is further backed-up by an impressive and ever growing resume that expands their reach. This includes a spot in an Adidas campaign, a tour with and backing band for Bun B(from UGK), Pharoahe Monch, Plantlife (including a BBC performance for Jools Holland), Little Brother, Nice and Smooth, Black Sheep and New Orleans funk legend Eddie Bo at a Hurricane Katrina benefit. Members of Orgone also have featured in the make-up of Ubiquity acts the Lions, Connie Price and the Keystones, Breakestra, and have performed with the Pharcyde, De La Soul, Too Short, Macy Gray among many others. To top it off, most of the group can be heard on recent major recordings by Alicia Keys, Estelle, Anthony Hamilton, Jennifer Hudson, Solange Knowles and many other R&B/Soul artists.
Orgone continues to tour, impressing audiences and winning new fans at festivals & clubs nationally and overseas. 2009 saw the release of their second fully independent CD “bacano”, a collection of all original cold-blooded funk gems representing what’s always been going down in Orgone’s funky, sweaty home-grown recording spot. It’s a recorded history of the band and its musical family throwing down: check the lethal neck-busting bass intro of founding member Tim Glum on “You Already Doin It”, the Detroit thump of bassist Dale Jennings on the deep hypnotic funk soundscape of “Vibromeyer”, the dance floor soul of singer Gino Garafalo on the undeniably hip-shaking “Come Around” and the sub-atomic gut punch of Orgone bassist Ethan Phillips on the heavy psychedelic groove of “Hott Karl”.
Orgone live and recorded is 100% organic heart and soul an aesthetic and an attitude born out of half a lifetime of playing together.

PRESS

RELIX magazine “: …an ultra-funky intertwining of infectious grooves with melodic phrases, even when they are at their most experimental. Despite the music’s complexity, it remains uncluttered and spacious…If you are into classic funk like Parliament Funkadelic, the Meters …you should find Orgone intoxicating. In addition to the funk, R&B and jazz elements, the band exhibits an adventurous rock ‘n’ roll twist…This is one hell of a band.”
“Their music is terrifically unfussy, big slabs of grizzled R&B, greasy as fatback and thick as a very particular kind of smoke. At their best, they recall the majesty of Sly & the Family Stone; opening track “Who Knows Who” is all bleary horns and broken-heart vocals, “It’s What You Do” is a tight, itchy jam. There’s still a riot goin’ on, and Orgone is at the front of the crowd.”
- eMusic
“L.A.’s Orgone keeps the hotness of the recent retro-soul revival coming; lead singer Fanny Franklin fits in very nicely between Sharon Jones and Amy Winehouse. As befits the band’s name, Orgone’s sound is quite organic, rooted in soul, funk, boogaloo, and jazz, with a classic appeal that’s nevertheless contemporary…the entire album is one non-stop groove. If smooth, soulful funk with jazzy arrangements makes you sweat, you just found your new favorite band.”
- XLR8R
“Orgone has provided all the elemental power to drive the funk/soul revival to new levels with The Killion Floor…Orgone will invigorate your groove spirit and get booty out of its little box and out on the dance floor.”- KEXP, 90.3FM (SEATTLE)

“By the time the listener gets to the nasty, distorted, finger-popping, ass waggling “Crabby Ali” — where the deep brewed, second-line New Orleans old-school funk goes head to head with the gloss of L.A.’s Tower of Power styled horn charts — it feels like the party’s just getting started.”

- All Music
A monstrous debut from one of the heaviest acts we’ve heard in years — LA’s Orgone, easily one of the most up-and-coming funky combos around! Although Orgone share a bit with some of the leaner deep funk groups who’ve cropped up in the past decade or so, they’ve also got a sound that’s a bit more advanced overall — sort of that second-generation approach to funk that hit the scene by the mid 70s, as some of the bigger funk acts like Black Heat or War moved out of the indie scene and really started to hit a wider audience! That doesn’t mean that Orgone’s commercial at all — because they’ve got a sound that’s still as sharp-edged as any smaller group — but with a lineup that’s quite large, they’re able to encompass a very wide range of soulful styles — gritty 45 riffing, slinky Chicano-styled grooves, Afro Funk, tighter soul tracks, and lots lots more — all carried off with perfection throughout. The album feels like some lost masterpiece on Fantasy, or possibly some overlooked early 70s major label funk set on WEA or United Artists — and titles include “Who Knows Who”, “I Get Lifted”, “Funky Nassau”, “Lone Ranger”, “Prism Break”, “Crabby Ali”, “Duck & Cover”, “Dialed Up”, “Said & Done”, “Hambone”, “It’s What You Do”, “Do Your Thing”, and “Sophisticated Honky”.
