Jul 10, 2009: Manuel Castells in Conversation at One Alfred Place

Manuel Castells is our foremost theorist of the power of communication in modern society

His new book Communication Power is a natural progression from his 'Network Society' trilogy - a powerful, forward-looking analysis of communication in the Network Society

4ip are delighted to host a breakfast seminar with Manuel Castells on 10 July at One Alfred Place

In this wide-ranging and powerful book, Manuel Castells analyses the transformation of the global media industry by this revolution in communication technologies. He argues that a new communication system, mass self-communication, has emerged, and power relationships have been profoundly modified by the emergence of this new communication environment. Created in the commons of the Internet this communication can be locally based, but globally connected. It is built through messaging, social networks sites, and blogging, and is now being used by the millions around the world who have access to the Internet.

Justly celebrated for his analysis of the network society, Castells here builds on that work, offering a well grounded and immensely challenging picture of communication and power in the 21st century. This is a book for anyone who wants to understand the dynamics and character of the modern world.

Jul 10, 2009: Fundraising with Twitter at The Hub Kings Cross

You're probably hearing quite a bit about Twitter now and how some charities are starting to use it.

But can you use it for fundraising? If so, how can your charity benefit from it? Find how from UK Fundraising's Howard Lake as he guides you through getting started with Twitter as a fundraising tool.

* how does Twitter fit into your fundraising plans?
* making the most of your Twitter account and presence
* building up your network of supporters by listening and following
* different types of fundraising using Twitter
* how to measure your impact

It is still early days for Twitter as a fundraising tool and we don't pretend to grasp it all.

But if you're looking for practical ideas and a helping hand, Howard Lake has over 14 years' experience of reporting on, thinking about, and training charities in using the Internet to fundraise.

Join us at the The Hub, King's Cross, for live demonstrations of Twitter in action. Bring your own laptop if you want and get online using the venue's wi-fi system. Laptops not required of course - just curiosity about whether Twitter can work for your organisation.

NB. Ticket prices are £90 + VAT, and £175+ VAT. The VAT will be included when you pay on Paypal.

You can opt to pay by invoice.

"Having decided that the NCPTA needed to utilise digital media to the full, we went onto open a Twitter account. The question was, what do we do next? The Fundraising with Twitter course, was a fast and furious two hours, packed with practical hints and tips, to guide you through the maze of things to consider. I came away more enlightened, with a clear idea of how to take our communication with our supporters to another level".

Sep 23, 2009: Mobile VAS Summit 2009 at ITC SHeraton Delhi

Mobile VAS Summit 2009...
“Identifying & evaluating the successful growth strategies & the future directions for VAS”
September 23, 24 2009, ITC Sheraton, New Delhi, India
For more info on the event
http://virtueinsight.com/site/TelecomDetails.aspx?SC_ID=1
Early bird discount – Limited seats left – Book Now!!!!!...

Mobile value-added services hold a tremendous revenue-generating potential in India which could rake in around Rs 18,000 crore by 2012. It will contribute about INR 6,000 crore to total revenue from telecom operations by end of 2009. This is likely to go up to Rs 18,000 crore by 2012.

Indian telecom companies further created a record of 15 million customers in January 2009, indicating that the world’s fastest growing telecom market remains untouched by the economic slowdown. This is a global record for any telecom market. The number of phone connections in India — mobile and landline — has crossed 400 million as of early 2009. Mobile phone users now account for close to 91% of the country’s telephone base with 362.3 million connections, With ever rising cellular subscribers, voice is increasingly becoming a commodity. Service Provider's are experiencing low ARPU's and high subscriber churn rate. Over the last 6 years, the Indian telecom industry has realized the importance of Mobile Value Added Services. Propelled by the need to bring in service differentiation, operators are bringing new value added services in order to satisfy the growing demand of Indian consumers.
Jul 21, 2009: American Diabetes Association Step Out Walk Registration Opens April 15th at American Diabetes Association

The local Independence and Akron offices of the ADA provide support for 22 counties in the Northeast Ohio area. Four Step Out Walk events have been planned in the Northeast Ohio area. 1Hudson: Saturday, September 12, at HudsonSpringsPark 2Cleveland: Saturday, October 3, at Time Warner Cable Amphitheater 3Akron:Sunday, October 4, at Lock 3 4Youngstown:Sunday, October 18, at Canfield Fairgrounds There is a 9:00 AM Check-in/Registration and 10:00 AM Start Time at all four events. Registrants can join the ADAs efforts as individuals, friends & family teams, corporate teams, club and organization teams and associates in order to participate in the Step Out Walk events. Anyone interested in registration without computer / internet access can call the ADA office at 1-888-DIABETES (342-2383) and request Step Out Walk registration materials. To date, the American Diabetes Association has raised and donated more than $450 million for diabetes research. In 2008, the northeast Ohio walks raised more than $300,000 in support of the mission of the ADA. Today, there are nearly 24 million Americansincluding 330,000in northeast Ohiowhohave diabetes. While an estimated 17.9 million have been diagnosed, unfortunately, 5.7 million people are unaware that they have the disease.Another 57 million Americans have pre-diabetes, placing them at increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes. If present trends continue, one in three Americans and 1 in 2 minorities born in 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetime. Some of the primary risk factors for type 2 diabetes are being overweight, living a sedentary life-style, being over the age of 45 and having a family history of diabetes. African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are at an increased risk, as are women who have delivered babies weighing more than nine pounds at birth. Unfortunately, people with type 2 diabetes can live for years without realizing that they have the disease. While people with diabetes can exhibit noticeable symptoms, such as frequent urination, blurred vision and excessive thirst, most people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes do not show these overt warning signs at the time that they develop the disease. Often, type 2 diabetes only becomes evident when people develop one or more of its serious complications, such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, eye damage, or nerve damage that can lead to amputations. The American Diabetes Association is leading the fight against the deadly consequences of diabetes and fighting for those affected by diabetes. Together we can stop diabetes, One Step At A Time. The ADA offices in Independence and Akron serve Northeast Ohio, and the ADA is currently funding 6 researchers in the northeast Ohio area. The ADA provides diabetes education and resources, and gives voice to those denied their rights because of diabetes. Founded in 1940, the ADA's mission is to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. For more information about diabetes contact the ADA office serving Northeast Ohio by calling 1-888-DIABETES, or write to American Diabetes Association 4500 Rockside Rd., #440, Independence, Ohio, 44131 or American Diabetes Association 1815 West Market Street, #108, Akron, OH, 44313.

Drew Heitzler's elegant installations use video, film, photography, drawing, and sculpture in order to uncover suppressed or latent narratives that link cultural and social histories through unusual paths.
Aug 1, 2009: Einreicheschluss YOUKI 09 at MedienKulturHaus Wels

YOUKI 11
INTERNATIONALES JUGEND MEDIEN FESTIVAL

November in Wels
Das Festival YOUKI findet jährlich Ende November statt. Zentrale Veranstaltungsorte sind das Kulturzentrum ALTER SCHLACHTHOF und das MEDIEN KULTUR HAUS in Wels Oberösterreich.

Internationales Kurzfilmprogramm

New Media Cincinnati began in October 2007 as a simple meetup group of people in the Cincinnati, Dayton, and Northern Kentucky areas who were passionate about new and social media technologies like blogging, podcasting, Twitter, etc.

The group consists of people who are using new and social media for a living, but also includes people who are simply involved as a hobby. Anyone interested in learning more about these technologies and in connecting with others is welcome to attend. New Media Cincinnati has become, as one attendee remarked, "the premiere social networking event in the Greater Cincinnati area."

What I Learned from Podcamp Ohio 2

The theme for this month is "What I Learned from Podcamp Ohio 2." Many of us attended Podcamp Ohio 2 in Columbus on June 20, 2009; some who weren't able to make it followed the conversations online through Twitter and elsewhere. As you come to this month's Second Saturday event, please think of at least one take-away from Podcamp Ohio 2 that you can share with the rest of the group.

This discussion will last for about 30 minutes, and afterward, we'll continue the open networking that we all enjoy.
