Four literary organizations in the Twin Cities are celebrating significant anniversaries this year: Coffee House Press (25 years), Graywolf Press (35 years), The Loft Literary Center (35 years), and Milkweed Editions (30 years). In this special edition of Talk of the Stacks moderated by MPR's Marianne Combs, executive directors from the four organizations will discuss why so many nationally-recognized literary organizations have thrived here, tell tales of the literary life, and share their vision of what readers and writers can expect in the days ahead.

Talk of the Stacks is a reading series exploring contemporary literature and culture held at the Central Library in downtown Minneapolis (Pohlad Hall, 300 Nicollet Mall). Talk of the Stacks is free with open seating. Programs begin at 7 PM. Doors open at 6:15 PM. Presented by the Library Foundation of Hennepin County.

On Friday, December 4th the Calvin Theatre & PAC in Northampton, MA is proud to present comedian Paula Poundstone. Armed with nothing but a stool, a microphone and a can of Diet Pepsi, Paula’s ability to create humor on the spot has become the stuff of legend. Little wonder people leave Paula’s shows debating whether the random people she talked to were “plants” – which, of course they never are, and complaining that their cheeks hurt from laughter. .

Paula’s spontaneity and razor-sharp wit have made her one of the most popular panelists on NPR’s hilarious weekly news quiz show, Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me. (2008 winner of the prestigious Peabody Award for Broadcasting excellence). Paula’s commentaries can be heard on NPR’s Morning Edition and read on the Huffington Post and comedy site: 23/6. Denise Michelle Harris, author of the bestselling novel Sweet Bye-Bye, continues her free writer’s workshop series. One of the most common fears expressed by writers is, “I don’t have any good ideas.” A difficult lesson a writer must learn is that uncertainty is an integral part of the writing process. Denise will lead workshop participants in exercises from The Making of a Story: A Norton Guide to Creative Writing by Alice LaPlante, aimed at helping you to harness the inevitable doubt and uncertainty of the creative process in order to begin discovering your own voice and material. This workshop will be based on Chapter 2: The Splendid Gift of Not Knowing.
