The well known and loved literary classic “Little Women” is the sweetheart show of the season. The beloved tale by Louisa May Alcott of the four March girls -- practical Meg, rambunctious Jo, sweet Beth and childish artist Amy who live in genteel poverty with their mother Marmee; their father is away in the Civil War. Despite having little money, the girls keep their spirits up with writing, gardening, homemade plays, and the occasional romp with wealthier pals. Their pal, "poor little rich boy" Laurie, joins in and becomes their adoptive brother, as the girls deal with Meg's first romance, Beth's life-threatening illness, fears for their father's safety and finding each sisters true destiny.

Feb 21, 2010: Little Women at The Stage Door, Inc.

Nov 22, 2009: Springfield Music Awards Pre-Show at Kuss Auditorium, Clark State Community College Performing Arts Center

The Springfield Music Awards is an outlet for children in the community to showcase their talents by performing in front of a panel of real industry professionals. This is a family oriented event and the music choices will be family friendly whether original or current covers. Each participant is judged on overall talent, wardrobe, attitude, and teamwork. Each participant selects their music, prepares a choreographed routine, and is in charge of their wardrobe. Awards are given for various categories.

In our educational segment the children learn the various aspects of what goes into an award show from being a part of the office staff, production, performing, playing in a band and dancing.

In 2006 Yvetta Young founded the award show, and it has since grown tremendously. This year, we are introducing the Springfield Music Award Pre-Show and this event shall expand on the original show concept to further introduce the community to this positive channel of expression.
This year’s Pre-Show confirmed industry professionals are:

* Kim Burse, Creative Director for Beyoncé / Former A&R for Columbia Records: Jamie Foxx, Queen Latifah, Ciara, Backstreet Boys, Destiny’s Child and Nelly

* Alvin Speights, 4x Grammy Award Winning Engineer: Michael Jackson, Madonna, Polo Da Don, Ciara, Jazzy Pha, Dallas Austin, Jermaine Dupri, Cee Lo, Angie Stone, TLC, etc

* William Burke, Programmer for the Stars: Beyoncé, Ne-Yo, Monica, Nelly, Jamie Foxx, Gwen Stefani, Chris Brown, Ciara, Backstreet Boys etc.

* Ian Burke, Music Consultant for SO SO DEF / Former A&R Director for Elektra Records / Senior Director of Creative Affairs for ASCAP

* Tony Taylor, Production Manager for Tony Taylor Touring/Crossover Studios: Backstreet Boys, Sunshine Anderson, Kelly Rowland, Dionne Farris, Nelly, Nas, Young Jeezy, Monica, etc.

* Chris Green, Senior Director of Promotions and Street Marketing at Capital Records

* Yvetta Young, CEO of Ensignia Associates / CFO of Bcreative Productions and 311 Music Group, Special Events & Production Coordinator / Former Production Coordinator for Destiny's Child-Beyoncé Touring

* Preston Middleton, CEO of Next Wave Entertainment / Films / Writer & Producer for Pump Audio- Music for reality television shows on MTV, VH1. Professor at Texas Southern University Digital Entertainment Degree Program

The Pre-Show will feature an opening act from the roster of previous Springfield Music Awards winners. Other participants will be individuals and groups that aspire to be in the music industry. A key component to the Springfield Music Awards Pre-Show is community involvement and outreach. This year, we are teaming up with local charities to give back to the community. All participants, crew and attendees are united in the fight against hunger and poverty that plagues the City of Springfield. This Pre-Show has stimulated various charitable / fundraising efforts and food drives within the local schools and businesses and as well as a silent auction to raise funds for our local non-profit partner(s).256

Presented in association with Sons & Daughters of jamaica. 'Life & Debt' is a woven tapestry of sequences focusing on the stories of individual Jamaicans whose strategies for survival and parameters of day-to-day existence are determined by the U.S. and other foreign economic agendas. This searing documentary examines how the policies of the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and other aid organizations have changed the Jamaican economy over the past quarter of a century, leaving the local people to struggle in poverty and work in sweatshops. Panel discussion follows screening.

Nov 14, 2009: LUCE has 30 FREE tickets at The Barrel House

We have just received 30 FREE tickets to the benefit this Saturday! If you want to get your name on the guest list, email Kelly at: kelly@circusofcancer.org!!!!

LUCE is proud to play at this benefit for Y Scholars, a program that helps kids living below the poverty line get in to college. Please come out to support this great cause and enjoy the great San Francisco music!

RSVP
Make a check out to Berkeley YMCA @ $150 per person and mail it to:
Kelly Corrigan & Edward Lichty | 455 Mountain Avenue | Piedmont, CA 94611

LUCE began in 2000 as a one-man band when Tom Luce began writing songs in his bedroom in the foggy Richmond District of San Francisco. But it wasn't long before his self titled first CD gained immediate attention on Bay Area radio stations such as San Francisco’s KFOG. The album's single, “Good Day” was soon picked up in Hollywood and appeared in movies such as How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days and 13 Going On 30, and television shows like The O.C. and Alias. In 2003, Luce earned the band the California Music Award for “Outstanding Debut Album.” And so the band took to the road, and toured the US playing alongside bands like Sixpence, None The Richer and Goo Goo Dolls.
In the early spring of 2005, LUCE’s Sophmore album, Never Ending, was unveiled to a packed house filled with eager fans who welcomed the new music with open arms and plenty of excitement. Never Ending’s single, “Buy A Dog” found its way onto the USA Network’s Psych and the silver screen’s Frank, The Dog. In the fall of 2007, LUCE was awarded “Best Band You Should Know About” by San Francisco Magazine readers.
Despite a stroke of bad luck in which Tom's house burnt to the ground and the band's tour van and trailer with all it's gear were stolen, the band continues to persevere in the face of those crushing setbacks. In 2008, LUCE attracted the attention of an exciting new Bay Area based record label, Opus Music Ventures, and at the top of this year, became one of it’s first signing bands. With the powerful force of the young energetic label, LUCE now has full service publicity, management, a tour support team and is about to release their much anticipated third album, Corner of the World, this Spring. It is sure to take the band to new and soaring heights.

Nov 14, 2009: Education 4 Everyone at South Lakes Park

The Kroo Bay Initiative (KBI) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to ensure high-quality, primary-level education in Kroo Bay, Sierra Leone. KBI's immediate focus is to assist the existing school in Kroo Bay, currently the Fuwa Primary School, so it can meet its basic operational needs and expand its educational programs.

Funds raised from the event will support scholarships for students seeking their primary and secondary education in Kroo Bay, a slum inhabited by economic migrants and persons displaced by war in Freetown, Sierra LeonE

LOCAL NONPROFIT LAUNCHES FIRST ANNUAL EDUCATION RUN

Students, Kroo Bay Initiative Determined to Support Slum Despite Credit Crisis

DENTON – On Saturday, November 14, North Texans will help bring the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to fruition – by running for them.

“We’re hoping North Texas will show up for a good cause – the right cause,” says Lindsey Bengfort, KBI’s president and co-founder, and a student at UNT. “People will be able to put their feet and, hopefully, their wallets to use in making the best education possible for one of the poorest communities in Africa.”

Participants in the event will pay $15 to run or walk at South Lakes Park of Denton. Registration is at 9:00 a.m. and the run will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. Individuals are free to walk anytime from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Volunteers will provide water free of charge to participants, and participants will receive a free t-shirt for registering.

Alhaji Saccoh, a board member who is from Sierra Leone, said, “I think this is particularly important right now with the global economy. Investing in education is investing in the future of the world. We need educated people to become innovative leaders and skilled workers so that they can become active participants in the economy. Education is a way to ensure better jobs and better lives for the people of Sierra Leone.”

Adds Ryan Schuette, KBI’s co-founder and finance chair: “We’re just trying to keep America’s promise from past international commitments to Africa. The G-20 met in London and hardly discussed support for developing countries suffering from a crisis they didn’t create. KBI wants to fill the gap between commitment and follow-through in Kroo Bay.”

The International Monetary Fund recently reported that the credit crisis would slash overall economic growth in Africa by half, to 3 percent annually, a devastating contraction that it warned will likely throw millions of people back into extreme poverty.

This comes on the heels of media reports indicating that numerous nonprofits, foundations and other charities are closing because of the credit crisis.

“You know, this is why we’re running,” says Bengfort. “If we don’t stand up for the most vulnerable in this crisis, who will?”

Started in 2008, KBI is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization committed to shoring up the education system in Kroo Bay. To learn more about the organization or the Education 4 Everyone run, visit http://www.kbinitiative.org.

Nov 15, 2009: Raks Spooki IV: A Gothic Belly Dance Event at The Regent Theatre

If Halloween is the time when the boundaries between worlds are opened, Raks Spooki is the time to see what has slipped through the veils and stayed in this world! Come see all aspects of the darker side of belly dance explored at the fourth annual Raks Spooki, from the elegantly enigmatic to the morbidly macabre to the archly humorous to the utterly unclassifiable. This year's roster of performers draws from a variety of belly dance backgrounds from the traditional to the tribal and include: Aepril Schaile, Ameena, Aneckha, Aradia, Aria Beth Michaels, Atropos (Baseema), Badriya al-Badi'a, Bellastygma, Di'Ahna, Ela Rogers, Eugenia, Johara's Snakedance Theatre, Katrina, Naomi, Neylan, Qamar, Sabrina, Sabrina L., Samara, Selcouth, Tassellations, Tempest and Vadalna Tribal Dance Company. As the standing-room-only audiences of previous years can attest, this is a show you will not soon forget!

Proceeds from the event will be donated to Women for Women (www.womenforwomen.org/ ), a non-profit organization which helps women in war-torn regions of the world get back on their feet and start rebuilding their lives. Currently, they are focused on Afghanistan, Iraq, Sudan, Kosovo, Rwanda, Colombia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Nigeria and Democratic Republic of the Congo. Some of these are places where our dance movements, costuming and jewelry come from. Using what women of the world have given us from our relative place of peace and safety, we can make real differences in the lives of other women. In exercising our freedom to dance in this country, we can help women around the world gain their own freedom from war, poverty and injustice.

Badriya is an Arlington-based performer of both gothic and traditional Arabic belly dance styles. For more information, see http://users.rcn.com/badriya/

Nov 27, 2009: The D-Cup Diatribes at Gorilla Tango Theatre Chicago

MAKES ITS WORLD PREMIERE AT
THE GORILLA TANGO THEATRE ON NOVEMBER 27
Chicago—Melody Swink’s riotous one-woman comedy THE D-CUP DIATRIBES, makes its world premiere at the Gorilla Tango Theatre, 1919 N. Milwaukee, previewing November 27, opening Thursday, December 3 at 8 p.m. and running through December 19, 2009. The production is directed by Mark Contorno and stars Sara Tode.

THE D-CUP DIATRIBES, a new production by playwright and producer Melody Swink, is a witty and empowering celebration of womanhood and its fears and fantasies. Poignant, intimate, and triumphant, THE D-CUP DIATRIBES examines the diverse lives of six women and a young girl who internally struggle and externally compensate in a society obsessed with body image. From the anxiety of a girl’s pubescent transformation to the libertine life reminiscences of a 60-something former hippie wild child, this series of compelling and vulnerable monologues is a quirky exploration of women’s body perceptions in pop culture.

Hilarious and insightful, THE D-CUP DIATRIBES addresses topics ranging from size advantage and disadvantage; size enhancement and diminishment; mother/daughter expectations and inheritances; and the male marketing agenda as witnessed throughout the 20th Century. A dynamic story that embraces all shapes and sizes, THE D-CUP DIATRIBES will resonate with women of all ages.

The artistic team for THE D-CUP DIATRIBES includes Costume Design by Shiloh Aderhold; Music Video Production by Wayne Kumingo; Music Production by Vince Lawrence, Slang Music Studio; Lighting and Sound Design by Eric Price, assisted by Kim Kozak; and Art Direction by Melody Swink.

Melody Swink (Playwright, Producer, Singer/Songwriter) conceived THE D-CUP DIATRIBES three years ago, after coffee with a friend who had just received a lumpectomy. What ensued was a profound conversation that inspired the initial ideas behind the voices of THE D-CUPS’ women. Swink was raised in a rural town in California, where her passion for books and literature elevated her dreams from the harsh reality of childhood poverty. She proudly admits to transforming herself and transcending her past. After residing in San Francisco; Los Angeles; and Fisher Island, Florida, Swink migrated to the great jazz city of Chicago and has made it her creative hometown. Swink wrote every song on her debut jazz CD "Travel Me,” which boasted a National Top Ten Hit (FMQB - 4 Weeks Top 10, #6), "American Girl.” Her current release, "Today is Someday,” is a double CD (jazz/dance) that features stellar performances by three tiime Grammy Award winner, Ramsey Lewis. The CDs, housed in a 43-page Art Book under Swink’s art direction, were declared "A Grammy contender" by Urban Network Magazine. Swink penned the film score for indie comedy Fixing Tom for The Aspen Film Company. She is excited to present two new songs she wrote for THE D-CUP DIATRIBES, "The D-Cups Theme Song" and "Unfasten Me.” Proud to be in partnership with the Breast Cancer Network of Strength, Swink’s mission is to empower, uplift and aid in the funding and awareness of this worthy cause.

Mark Contorno (Director) is originally from Chicago. His theatrical career began in New York City, where he met producer Jerry Reneau. Renueau produced Contorno’s first show "This Crazy Life," for which he wrote the book, lyrics and music. Contorno’s Broadway credits include working with Joe Layton (Barnum, Richard Pryor Live on the Sunset Strip, Woman of the Year with Lauren Bacall). He returned to Chicago to direct, act and write for the theatre. Most recently he directed Mrs. Hyde and The Case of the Gaslight Buggerings written by Duane Scott Cerny at the Athenaeum Theatre, and has just finished performances in the play Euphoria written by Mark Ridge.

Sara Tode (the seven women) is originally from New Hampshire and recently relocated to Chicago from New York City. Her favorite roles include Olivia in Twelfth Night, Yasmin in Pentecost, Sarah in Speaking in Tongues, and Anita in West Side Story. Tode received her MFA in Acting from Penn State University.

THE D-CUP DIATRIBES runs from November 27 through December 19, 2009. The regular schedule is Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m. All tickets are $20. A portion of ticket sales will benefit Breast Cancer Network of Strength. For tickets, call the Gorilla Tango Theatre at 773-598-4549 or visit www.gorillatango.com.

Nov 18, 2009: Beyond Microfinance at Hanson Bridgett

Silicon Valley Microfinance Network presents "Franchising in Microfinance." While microfinance has helped local entrepreneurs expand their businesses several limitations have become apparent. A good portion of microfinance clients are "forced entrepreneurs" who have no alternative for generating income. In addition, only a small number of microenterprises ever grow into small or medium sized enterprises (SMEs) that offer significantly more job opportunities for non-entrepreneurs. Finally, financing SMEs in a sustainable, scalable way has proven to be fairly elusive.

Is the franchise model an answer to these challenges? Proven, turnkey solutions with the potential to scale with support from the franchisor would seem to address these issues. Are there examples of successful, sustainable microfranchises? What are the key elements for success? What challenges have been encountered in the execution of a micro-franchise strategy?

David Lehr and Chuck Slaughter bring their rich, practical experiences in micro-franchising to answer these questions and others.

David Lehr is Senior Advisor, Social Innovations at Mercy Corps where he works to develop sustainable businesses in the failed and fragile states of the world that create employment and economic growth. He has broad experience in microfranchising and is developing a franchise network of sustainable health stores in Guatemala.
Chuck Slaughter, founded TravelSmith Outfitters and turned it into the #1, brand in travel wear with $100 million in sales. Now he devotes his time to the world of micro enterprise. Chuck founded Living Goods to build fully sustainable networks of mobile health entrepreneurs for defeating the diseases of poverty in Africa. He currently serves on the boards of Three Day Blinds, BRAC-USA, Living Goods and The Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation, and is a member of the Initiative for Global Development and Technoserve.
