Sep 26, 2009: The Cherry Orchard at Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum

In this new adaptation by Heidi Helen Davis and Ellen Geer, we set this classic drama in 1970 Virginia when the civil rights movement was paving the way to America's first African American President.
Emigrating from Germany to the United States in 1928, photojournalists Hansel Mieth and Otto Hagel spent their early years in California. During the dark times of the Depression, they traveled throughout the country as transient farm-workers, all the while recording the daily struggles of itinerant laborers and their families. Hansel eventually worked for 'Life Magazine' while Otto freelanced for 'Life,' 'Time' and others. In 1941, the couple relocated to a farm in Santa Rosa where they continued their celebrated work depicting the harsh realities of unemployment, migrant life and poverty.

Presented in cooperation with the Wisconsin Union Theater, Four Seasons Theatre commemorates the 30th anniversary of 'Evita,' winner of seven Tony Awards including Best Musical. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's 'Evita' is the classic rags-to-riches story of Eva Peron, a peasant girl who rises from the poverty of small-town Argentina to become the nation's iconic first lady.
Aug 13, 2009: World Affairs Council Presents “Affecting Change Through Online Giving” at World Affairs Council Auditorium

Matt Flannery, Co-Founder and CEO, Kiva; Keith Taylor, Founder and CEO, Modest Needs Foundation

The global financial crisis has put those living in poverty in an even more precarious position and left many of the institutions that would normally come to their aid unable to help. What is the best way for each of us to reach out to those most in need? Many point to small acts of philanthropy, such as micro-lending and grant-making. Innovative organizations that facilitate such person-to-person giving are thriving in the current economic climate, demonstrating that small, seemingly insignificant actions can lead to meaningful change. Flannery and Taylor—pioneers of online giving markets—will discuss their two models and how we can help individuals pull themselves out of the cycle of poverty both at home and world-wide.

Thursday, August 13; Check-in: 5:30 PM, Program: 6:00 PM

Jul 14, 2009: An Evening with Mikelann: Women Stepping into Prosperity at Women's Earning Institute

Are you earning at your potential? Or are you struggling against an "internal income ceiling"? Does the economy have you down? In this powerful evening seminar, Mikelann Valterra, founder and director of The Women's Earning Institute, explores "underearning"- the pattern of earning below your potential. She addresses the psychology of why women undersell themselves and most importantly-what to do about it. Women are in greater danger of underselling themselves in this economy. Don't let this happen to you! This will be a very useful and thought provoking evening, so be prepared to be engaged and energized.

Here is just a portion of what you will learn in this seminar:
* Identify the five hidden forms of underearning (and how they may be costing you money!)
* Explore the concept of "noble poverty"-is it holding you back?
* The impact of the "money fog" on our earning ability
* How women under price themselves and what to do about it
* 2 powerful negotiation strategies that conquer the "good girl syndrome"

Mikelann knows there are a lot of amazing women who are not earning at their potential. Are you one of them? From expecting less money than men, to difficulty in asking for what they really want, women deal with complex emotional issues around earning money. You will leave this seminar with deep personal insights into your earning issues and actionable steps you can take to earn more.

What women say:
"....Mikelann's techniques helped me open my mind up to new possibilities."
"Your talk was amazing! It gave me the courage to affirm my worth with someone right away yesterday...."
"I had many "aha" moments during Mikelann's Earn Your Worth seminar...."

Who is Mikelann Valterra?
Mikelann Valterra is passionately devoted to empowering women to earn what they are really worth. Mikelann is an internationally published author, dynamic speaker and nationally sought after expert on women's money and earning issues.

Jul 17, 2009: Charity Happy Hour at Josephine!! at Josephine Lounge

Okay, time to get together for our next happy hour!

We'll be benefiting DC Habitat for Humanity... http://dchabitat.org/... ... an organization with the mission to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness in the nation's capital by building affordable, energy- and resource-efficient homes for people in need... suggested $5 or $10 donation. Please note 80% of donations go to DC Habitat for Humanity, 20% of donations go to the 20s & 30s Going Out Group to cover meetup fees and expenses.

DJ Teng will be spinning loungy groovy beats for us. Our happy hours typically bring out 150 - 250 folks... and I wouldn't be surprised with a similar turnout this time around.

For those that haven't been there before, Josephine features a cavernous underground space that has a retro-chic French touch. See josephinedc.com

To help continue the friendly tone of this group... I'd like to again encourage each person to have a GOAL OF MEETING 3 NEW PEOPLE at this event. To help do this, for an icebreaker, we'll put your name in a jar as you walk in, and then give you someone else's name from the jar. Also, 20s & 30s Rockstars, please help make all the newcomers feel welcome to our group!

To RSVP please visit here... http://www.20sand30sgroup.com/calendar/10661231/

Jul 29, 2009: West End Meeting "Don't Vote! Organise to Fight back!" at Bentinck Social Centre

Hundreds of thousands in Britain will be forced out of work in the coming months, out of their homes and into poverty. They will face a punitive Welfare Reform Bill, which, when it becomes law, will intensify the oppression of those who cannot work. Eligibility for income support, incapacity allowance and other benefits will be reduced to force people – including single mothers and those unfit for work – into whatever miserable jobs are available, on whatever conditions the ruling class sees fit to impose. Those unable to get work will be forced to perform ‘community service’ for their benefits, for the equivalent of £1.83 an hour. Backed by the racist media, the Labour government continues its virulent attack on immigrants and asylum seekers, with a barrage of immigration laws used to harass, detain and deport thousands of people. Those who demonstrate – in support of the peoples of Palestine or Tamil Eelam, or against the G20 summit – are violently attacked by the British police. As part of a summer campaign, we will be hosting a major FREE meeting under the slogan 'Corrupt Economy, Bankrupt Politics: Don't Vote, Organise to Fight Back!' in Elswick; one of the areas of Newcastle worst affected by rapdily escalating unemployment. Join us in debate and discussion. No age limit. All welcome.

Jul 11, 2009: Lawn Event - Micro Mini Car Day at Larz Anderson Auto Museum

This is the Largest Truly Exotic Car Meet in the United States! Join us from 1PM-4PM on Saturday July 11th. Nearly everyone has seen a Ferrari, but when was the last time you set your eyes on the sensuous curves of a Messerschmitt, a Peel Trident, or a Kleinschnittger F125 Roadster? This 360 pound all aluminum roadster car can propel its two occupants to a maximum speed of 28 mph by the force generated by its one cylinder, 3 1/2 horse power, 125 cc engine. These are not toy cars, but rather serious transportation solutions designed by some of the worlds best aircraft engineers, to place a war torn, poverty stricken Europe back on its wheels. The clean sheet of paper approach to engineering achieved some really fresh, unique and eccentric designs such as BMWs egg shaped Isetta with the single refrigerator door in the front, or the Messerschmitt which resembles a fighter plane which has had its wings clipped. Built by the Messerschmitt aircraft company from 1953 to 1964, it features tandem seating, acrylic cockpit dome and a steering yoke right off the fighter plane. Its two stroke engine is stopped and started in a reverse direction in order to select one of four available reverse gears. These microcars were manufactured primarily in the 1950s and 1960s, and constitute a really unique chapter in the history of the automobile. The vast majority of Microcars are European, and include such marques as Goggomobile, Zundapp, Isetta, Messerschmitt, Vespa, Heinkle Trojan, and Fiat. There are some American and Japanese examples such as Crosley, King Midget, Fuji, Daihatsu, Honda and Subaru. Most are powered by 1 or 2 cylinder, 2 stroke motorscooter engines. Many are 3-wheel configurations with enclosed chain drive, and all of them are absurdly whimsical in their appearance, design and function. Highlights This is the most unusual, unique and fun automotive event you will ever attend. Unlike many classic car shows where you are asked not to touch the finish of the show cars, which are parked for static display only, this day will be buzzing with activity. You will hear the sounds, and smell the scents as sixty to one hundred of these tiny little vehicles buzz around the museum grounds to the delight of everyone. Show car owners will offer rides to spectators who will have an opportunity to ride in as many different marques as they wish. Saturday, JULY 11, 2009 Larz Anderson Museum of Transportation, 15 Newton Street, Brookline, Massachusetts (617) 522-6547 Registration Fee: $20 per car (includes two Museum admissions) $10 per spectator (includes Museum admission) For more information on the entire three day event (July 10th-12th, 2009), please contact Charles or Nancy Gould @ (617) 965-4848 or e-mail chasgould@aol.com Website: www.bubbledrome.com A Breakfast and Lunch Menu will be available on the grounds provided by Euro Delights Catering and for more information visit www.eurodelights.org Location: Larz Anderson Park
