For those of you who didn't get a chance to see Rick Reynolds' fantastic new show "Only The Truth Is Funny - 2009" earlier this year, you're in luck - it's coming back! For those of you who did catch it, you're in luck as well. Rick has re-worked - and re-titled - the piece. It's now "Only The Truth Is Funny: Mid-Life At The Oasis," and features new material, both humorous and touching. Rick explains - "I didn't think that the theme of the first show (that life is hard but totally worth it) was as clear as it could be, so I've channeled Frank Capra in an effort to nail the damned thing!" Don't miss this second opportunity to experience what The San Francisco Chronicle has called "belly laughs for the heart," Rick Reynolds' "Only The Truth Is Funny: Mid-Life At The Oasis!" Cost:$20 presale/$25 at the door

Jul 12, 2009: Free House Plant Swap & Garden Item Exchange at Plant Swap Site

This free Plant Swap is a great way to be green in all senses of the word, and its free, so you'll be saving some green as well. Bring houseplants, seeds removed from fruit, indoor plant cuttings, gardening supplies, and/or garden related-items and take home new indoor plants and supplies to make your garden even better! Due to the quarantine on outdoor plants in northern California, we regret that outdoor plants, cuttings and produce CANNOT be swapped. (Please check out the "What to Bring" page on our site for more details on suggested swap items). After exchanging your gardening goods, make a day of it, and walk down to the free Stern Grove Festival featuring Joan Baez and Blame Sally, just a few blocks away. Easy walk from Muni 28, 23, L; and West Portal Station (Terminal for Muni K-L-M-17-48) is also nearby. Usually ample parallel and diagonal parking. Learn more about this event by visiting our website and blog (http://www.sfplantswap.wordpress.com). You can also connect with other gardeners and share tips for gardening in our special climate here in San Francisco by joining our Flickr group. If you would like a pdf of our flyer or can volunteer a free site to host this type of event, please email us!

Jul 8, 2009: Born to Kill - Odds Against Tomorrow at Aero Theatre

Born To Kill, 1947, Warner Bros., 92 min. Dir. Robert Wise. Unquestionably the most depraved picture made in Hollywood in the 1940s, stars Lawrence Tierney (the meanest man in noir) as a homicidal social climber who meets his match in debased San Francisco socialite Claire Trevor. He marries her wealthy half-sister (Audrey Long), but carries on his torrid affair with Claire while tenacious detective Walter Slezak hunts him down. This murderous, panting pair make MacMurray and Stanwyck in DOUBLE INDEMNITY pale in comparison. Elisha Cook Jr. is Tierney's justifiably nervous pal. Odds Against Tomorrow, 1959, MGM Repertory, 96 min. Dir. Robert Wise. Bigoted ex-convict Robert Ryan's mistrust of partner Harry Belafonte undermines the heist plans of their ex-cop leader Ed Begley, in this searing, underrated crime drama. Great atmospheric, on-location New York ambience fills every exterior shot. With Shelley Winters, Gloria Grahame.
This exhibition presents more than 200 of his photographs, ranging from street scenes taken after World War II and images of the glamorous fashion world of 1950s Paris to a selection of his more recent and best-known works: portraits of artists, heads of state and celebrities.

Oct 2, 2009: Candice Breitz: Working Class Hero at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (MOMA)

Berlin-based South African artist Candice Breitz has produced a number of video installations that deal with the impact of pop culture on contemporary consciousness -- especially our obsession with celebrity. 'Working Class Hero' (A Portrait of John Lennon), 2006, is the fourth installment in a series that focuses on pop-music icons (previous works address Bob Marley, Michael Jackson and Madonna). For 'Working Class Hero,' Breitz invited a diverse community of Lennon fans to pay tribute to the late musician by performing his first solo album, 'Plastic Ono Band,' from beginning to end. In addition to offering intimate portraits of each participant, the resulting 25-channel video installation forms a survey of fan culture and reflects on the complex threads of identification that often characterize the relationship between celebrities and their public. On view in an adjacent gallery is a second work by Breitz, entitled ;Mother' (2005). For this work, the artist took famous film performances by actresses in the role of a mother and edited them into composite monologues, creating an exploration of Hollywood 's representation of the maternal.

Aug 6, 2009: Ground, Ice & Water - Ideas for 'Groundsourcing' the Carbon Problem at The University Club

Join us at the Harvard Club of San Francisco for a public networking event and panel discussion on the role that ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) and allied thermal transfer techniques like ice storage and water gridding can play to capture "negatherms" and significantly reduce energy demand throughout the built environment.

Dennis Murphy, President of GroundSource Geo and recent winner of the world's largest clean technology business plan competition, The Clean Tech Open, leads a panel of Bay Area energy innovators focused on new solutions to the age-old problem of providing heating, cooling and hot water. Murphy will start with a crash course on GSHPs. The panel will then highlight an astounding array of uses for the thermal transfer of energy: How ice rinks can heat homes, and how your local water utility can provide your air conditioning.

Meet industry experts and learn about GSHPs, a mission-critical technology as Californians rush to meet "net zero" building requirements by 2020!

** OPEN TO THE PUBLIC **

Public $25 / Members $15 / PRICE INCLUDES DINNER -- Register by August 4th.
Lee Coombs Bio:
Bending boundaries and ignoring the status quo – where would the Breakbeat scene be today without Lee Coombs. For over a decade this British producer has been at the forefront of it all; releasing groundbreaking mix CDs, remixing the world’s most acclaimed artists and knocking out dancefloor destroying productions that are considered classics years after their release.

A seasoned veteran, Coombs first hit the DJ slopes in 1989, bathing himself in the acid house scene at parties around London and Cambridge. Crucial in shaping his all-encompassing approach to DJing and production, this boundary-less approach would become Coombs’ trademark, mixing up breaks, house, electro, techno and acid with dexterous assurance.

When he is not in the producers chair, Coombs regularly tours all corners of the globe and is a bona-fide fans favourite throughout Europe, the USA, Australia, Asia and of course the UK. His popularity has also ensured his repeat appearance at infamous festival ‘The Burning Man’ in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada.

In an industry that’s so often governed by trends and fads, Coombs’ unwavering ability to simultaneously destroy dancefloors and push musical boundaries almost 20 years since he first touched a pair of turntables is a remarkable achievement in itself. With plans to further spread his production wings to writing music for film and TV, as well as producing bands, there’s little doubt that his impressive sonic skills will be rocking ears for many years to come.

Opulent Temple Vision :: 2009
For the unexposed, the Opulent Temple started as a Large Scale Art & Music theme camp at the annual Burning Man arts festival that takes place in the Black Rock desert of Nevada the week before Labor Day. We throw nightly parties showcasing underground, world class electronic dance music in a setting of art and creation we've made ourselves. Our community and fund raising events are based in San Francisco, and though our production is associated with the BM event, we will be taking it to other settings.

The Vision of the Opulent Temple is to gift a space for sacred dance to world class dance music. It is our intention to create the space for peak experience, community development, and inspiration that serves as a road map for what's possible in the so called 'default world.' The effort is self generated by the tribe, ie., no one gets paid to create our production. On the contrary, key members put a lot of their own time, effort, and sometimes money all year around to to bring it back every year.

It's not just about partying.
It is our view social change will not happen without the individual elevation of our collective spiritual center of gravity. Thus, it is our responsibility to nudge our own evolution to catch up with the outpaced growth of technology without the soul getting left behind. It's within this community of creative seekers that coalesces around the playa tribes that leaders must emerge to help steer this nation and this world towards a better day.

To create a space for Sacred Dance is to create a playground for connection with the Eternal, but in our case, still infused with the need for social action in the real world. Big beats and community are the launching point for insight to remind us there is a point to evolution. Transcendence, and nothing less. It might sound like hippy New Age shit, but in this case that doesn't mean it isn't true...

The Musical Vision:
We're obviously firm believers in the beat, the transcending properties of mind blowing electronic dance music (EDM), both to open the heart and make the ass shake depending on one's preference and the moment. We value diversity in the range of world class artists that play our camp, as well as the camp dj's who build it so get to play what they feel. Most nights are fairly cohesive unto themselves, but day to day it can be all over the place. Our past line ups speak for themselves.

We'll see you in the sweet spot, under the stars...

The Show is one of the Bay Area's best monthly underground events, providing you with those dirty, nasty, funky beats that keep you on the dance floor all night. Every third Sunday, we showcase the heroes of the underground scene that bring us the newest sounds. In the evening, we showcase breakbeats, electro, hip hop hybrids, hyphy, glitch, acid bass, and dubstep. In the mornings we feature house, tech house and progressive house beats.

Our past guests include: Hipp-e & Halo of H Foundation, Mephisto Odyssey, The Space Cowboys, Nick Thayer, David Starfire, An-ten-nae, DJ Laura, Smoove, Mancub, Laird, S.I.M.O., all the Opulent Temple DJs, Hookerz & Blow, Fred Funk, Ernie Trevino, Michele Bass, Aaron Jae, Murphstar, Simon Littlewood, Motion Potion & The Fringe DJs M3, Solar, Galen, Anthony, Dory Kim, Patricio, DJ Icon, Eric Sharp, Rooz, Manny Ward, Vahid, Russell Vargas, Mikey Tello, Dawn of Sound, Adnan Sharif, Steve Prior, Layne Loomis, Chuck n' Roll, Paul Guido, DJ Antares, Seven, Keith Deckard, Sleazmore, George Cochrane, J-Bird, Jason Greer, Sol, Sunwoo, Gordie, Greg Eversoul, DJ B, Jared F and many more.

Aug 15, 2009: Dave Alvin & The Guilty Women at Santa Fe Brewing Co.

AMP Concerts & Fan Man Productions present
Saturday, August 15
Dave Alvin & The Guilty Women
Santa Fe Brewing Company
37 Fire Place
(Just Off NM Highway 14)
7:30 PM

One of the heroes and central figures of Los Angeles rock and roots music, Dave Alvin founded The Blasters with his brother Phil and then played with X and the Knitters. A mainstay during much of his career in music has been his electrifying band, The Guilty Men. Following the recent death of Dave's best friend and Guilty Men accordionist Chris Gaffney in early 2008, Alvin decided to move in an exciting new musical direction. In October 2008 he stepped onto the stage of the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco with an all-star, all-female group. Since dubbed The Guilty Women, the group consists of Americana scene vets Cindy Cashdollar, Nina Gerber, Laurie Lewis, Sarah Brown, Amy Farris, Christy McWilson and Lisa Pankrantz. The self-titled debut from this unique assemblage of players, led by Alvin, is a spirited collection of thoughtful yet dynamic tunes featuring world-class musicianship worthy of his now legendary pedigree.
"Weirdsville”
Oddities From The Archives
Screens at Oddball Films

On Saturday, July 11, Guest Curator Pete Gowdy and Oddball Films present an evening of the strange, the bizarre, and the sometimes baffling short films, commercials and trailers from deep within the Oddball archive. These “found” films surface in the process of research for other programs: too good to languish on the shelves, they demand to be screened! A monthly companion program to the Strange Sinema series. Showtime is 8:30PM and admission is $10.00. Seating is limited so RSVP is preferred to: info@oddballfilm.com or 415-558-8117.

Highlights Include:

“Flatland” (Color, 1965)

Life in a two-dimensional world. Narrated by Dudley Moore (as A Square) and members of the “Beyond The Fringe” theatrical group, this early adaptation of the beloved Edwin Abbott novel was produced at Harvard’s Visual Arts Center. The story continues to delight mathematicians, philosophers and computer theorists, and was recently adapted into a musical and the 2007 feature film of the same title. Neither, however, had the wisdom of this film’s brevity, nor the genius of Dudley Moore!

“This Is Coffee!” (Color, 1961)
A more potent ode to the pleasures and proper preparation of coffee has never been filmed. A perfect blend of sprightly music (with a sprinkling of crime-jazz), stunning visuals and vintage kitchenalia that will have you jonesing for a nice, hot cup of java. A perfect, scientifically made cup of coffee. As the sonorous narrator relates: “Perfect… coffee: sending its glow into our lives around the clock”.

“Best Foot Forward” (Color, 1960’s)
Not the 1943 musical starring Lucille Ball, nor the record by REO Speedwagon, but the early 1960’s short film about Hy-Test Safety Shoes! This engaging short highlights the “Golden Shoe Club” and was filmed in stunning Kodachrome color. Lots of close-ups of shoes and boots in all their safety-toed splendor.

“Chickenomics” (Color, 1979)
“A fowl approach to economics”, this short instructional film on basic economics features the San Diego Chicken. Learn creepy economic theory like “Consumer Sovereignty” from the creepy narrator, while the Chicken does his chicken thing.

“Bird Circus” (Color, 1950’s)
Wacky bird tricks in beautiful early 50’s color. What these birds won’t do for a beakful of seed!

“Kick Me” (Color, 1975)
Weird animation of stick figure legs kicking a ball that morphs into hundreds of spiders with a surprise ending. Nominated for an Academy Award in 1976.

“Industry On Parade” (B+W, 1955)
From the famous short subject documentary series, this episode shows how the Sears Roebuck catalog was produced in the day, visits the Hershey Chocolate factory in Pennsylvania, and a new drive-in diner that uses two-way radios for car and table service, and a “pressurized cabin” dining room.

PLUS- Trailers and commercials straight out of Weirdsville!

Curator Biography:
Pete Gowdy (aka DJ Chas Gaudi) is host of San Francisco’s Shellac Shack, a weekly 78 rpm listening party and a DJ specializing in vintage sounds: soul, jazz, country, punk and new wave. A graduate of the Vassar College Film Program, he is an associate producer of Marc Huestis Presents, the long-running movie legend tributes at the Castro Theatre.
