**Ken Vulsion (HONEYSOUNDSYSTEM): As a founding member of San Francisco's premiere Heavy Disco Dance collective - HONEYSOUNDSYSTEM - Ken & the rest of the crew (currently Peeplay, Jason Kendig, Robot Hustle, Josh Cheon & Derek Bobus) have recently celebrated the 2nd Anniversary of their amazing, always-exciting FREE Sunday Paradise Loft Party. They are also the "sister" party of London's Horsemeat Disco. Recently, they were awarded 2009's Goldie Award for Best Local Music by the San Francisco Bay Guardian! Ken recently was asked to do a mix for Tim Sweeny's oh-so-hot Beats In Space radio show (http://www.beatsinspace.net/playlists/470) and has been pivotal in unearthing previously-unreleased Patrick Cowley tapes - with the "Catholic" EP being the first in Stefan Goldmann and Finn Johannsen's Prototypes series on Macro Label.

Ken was one of the original members of Go BANG! at our very first party, always delivers heavy, bassy Disco beats, and he is NOT to be missed!

TERESA TUDURY started writing songs at age 12 and was performing in San Francisco nightclubs by the time she was 15. She has played on and off in the Bay Area for years, and for almost two decades was based in Los Angeles where in addition to music gigs, she wrote comedy and worked as a character actress on stage and screen.

With a deep, sultry voice that magnetizes audiences, and a scathing comedic wit to match, Teresa is a consummate performer who pours out her original songs with power, verve, passion, and disarming humor. Her vocal stylings are perfectly complemented by her bluesy guitar playing.

Throughout her career, Teresa has recorded or performed with such greats as Leonard Cohen, Rickie Lee Jones, Lyle Lovett, Taj Mahal, Leo Kottke and Bonnie Bramlett. She recently rereleased her 1992 self-titled solo album, Teresa Tudury, and her 2002 CD, River Of Life. Currently recording a CD of new material for release in 2009, and with a steady stream of concerts coming up, Teresa is a gifted artist in her prime.

This inventive citywide project engages local artists and reinvigorates neighborhoods that have been hard-hit by the economic downturn. It also provides artists, who have also been affected by the economy, with a unique opportunity to showcase their creativity in transforming vacant storefronts into free exhibition spaces and to garner public recognition for their work.

To commemorate World AIDS Day, donations will be collected at the door. All proceeds for the reading will go to San Francisco’s Stop AIDS Project.

The night will feature the work of GuyWriters members, including Derek Lassiter, Mac McNamara, Vincent Meis, Eric Rose, Alan Quismorio and James J. Siegel. Poetry, fiction and playwriting will all be represented at the reading.

The night will culminate with a reading from special guest Kemble Scott. Scott is a San Francisco resident and author of two novels. He is also a columnist for a special San Francisco edition of the New York Times. His most recent novel, “The Sower,” takes place in San Francisco, and tells the story of a man who becomes the carrier of a supervirus that can cure all diseases. The catch is that this supervirus can only be transmitted through sex. The story unravels as a thriller and page turner, and puts the protagonist in the middle of a new culture war.

The show will begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. There will be a $5 to $10 suggested donation at the door.

San Francisco's LGBT Community Center is pleased to kick off its annual Soiree with this teaser reception, featuring top flight performers dedicated to providing a good time. Headlining the evening is Veronica Klaus, the critically acclaimed singer who was named "Best Chanteuse" by the SF Bay Guardian for her jazz, blues and cabaret repertoire.

Rebecca Rolfe, executive director of the Center, stresses that the joyous reception also is an opportunity for revelers to learn the bigger picture of how the Center continues to celebrate, connect and fiercely advocate for the LGBT community. Rolfe also notes that "those who attend on Nov. 17 will get an early, insider scoop on some juicy news for April's Soiree 8."

The reception marks the kick-off of months of activities to plan the Center's annual fundraising gala, Soiree, which will be held on Sat. April 10 at Terra Art Gallery in San Francisco. Last year's Soiree was attended by more than 700 revelers, including "Milk" screenwriter Lance Dustin Black. This year, Supervisor David Campos and Human Rights Commission executive director Theresa Sparks are honorary chairs of the Soiree.

ABOUT THE FILM

After being evicted, hardworking single mom Elaine Cheng (Cindy Cheung, Lady in the Water) tries to maintain a normal life for her children, Raymond and Tina. Elaine juggles a number of jobs, including working for a questionable pyramid scheme. When Elaine doesn’t return home one night, nobody knows the kids are home alone, and they are left to fend for themselves. As the days pass, Raymond, a budding inventor, realizes he needs to come up with a plan to take care of his little sister. Referencing both the mortgage meltdown and suburban Ponzi schemes, “the film finds delicate moments of beauty and grace as its child heroes are forced to make their way” (Filmmaker Magazine). ‘Holidaze in Hicksville’ will feature Dorough, Hicks, and the Hot Licks collaborating on a selection of Hicks and Dorough originals, combined with jazz standards and holiday favorites, including the Miles Davis/Bob Dorough classic “Blue Xmas.”
A uniquely entertaining view of the holiday season, flavored with Dan Hicks’ signature electicism and humor will be presented through original songs and dance, including such Hicks-ian gems as "My Main Man Santa", "A Yule That’s Cool”, and "Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Christmas Card."

There will also be plenty of other slightly off-kilter (but never off-key) material from a singer-songwriter who's a true American original -- including his well-loved classics and selections from the recent Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks Surfdog Records release, Tangled Tales.

The Bob Dorough Trio will open each show.

DAN HICKS

Beginning as a drummer in the seminal 60's San Francisco rock band The Charlatans, and continuing with his unique and legendary Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks, Dan Hicks is widely acknowledged as one of the defining figures in American roots music. Having earned a reputation as a true original with his signature eclecticism and humor, Hicks continues to carve his way through a number of genres from proto-psychedelia to western swing and jazz, from tin pan alley to country blues -- all the while cultivating his own unique sound.
The original Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks recorded five ground-breaking and Billboard-charting records for the Columbia, Blue Thumb and Warner Bros. labels. They toured worldwide, and Dan appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine three times.

The newest incarnation of Dan Hicks & the Hot Licks released the wildly successful "Beatin' the Heat" in 2000, featuring collaborations with Bette Midler, Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, Rickie Lee Jones and Brian Setzer. USA Today called it "one of the blessings of the new millennium." That release was followed by the live CD "Alive & Lickin" in 2001.
2003 saw the release of "Dan Hicks and The Hot Licks - Featuring An All Star Cast of Friends" DVD/CD, a spectacular concert and video project that reunited Hicks with virtually every musician he has ever played and recorded with. Both Mojo and Downbeat magazines rated it "Four Stars...one of the best CDs of '04."
2005 brought the studio album "Selected Shorts", featuring special guests Willie Nelson, Jimmy Buffett, Gibby Haynes, Jim Keltner and Van Dyke Parks. It was widely touted as one of the band's best -- The New Yorker magazine remarked, "As great as his early masterpiece "Where's the Money?"...truly superb."

In vintage Dan Hicks form, Tangled Tales, his tenth studio album (March 24, 2009/Surfdog Records) , mashes the outlaw swing music, insightful charm, and brilliant melodies that have endeared him to audiences and fellow artists for four decades. Featuring a world-class collection of musical talent including instrumental virtuosos David Grisman, Charlie Musselwhite, and slide-guitarist Roy Rogers, and produced by Grammy-winning roots music producer Chris Goldsmith, Tangled Tales delivers eight great new original tunes that feel like instant Dan Hicks classics (and some choice cover tunes too). It is yet another brilliant addition to the unique body of work of this great American songwriter. To quote Daily Variety, "Dan Hicks is at the top of his game … unlike many pop artists today, a new studio album from Dan Hicks is like a new painting from Picasso… STAY TUNED!"

BOB DOROUGH

Bob Dorough was born in Cherry Hill, Arkansas on December 12, 1923, and grew up in Texas, where he graduated from North Texas State University, majoring in composition. He moved to New York City to become a jazz musician in 1950 and lived in Paris from 1954 to 1955 (where he recorded with singer Blossom Dearie). When he returned to the United States, Dorough moved to Los Angeles, where he played various gigs, including a job between sets by Lenny Bruce.

Dorough released his first album, Devil May Care, in 1956. It contained a version of "Yardbird Suite" with lyrics by Dorough over the famous Charlie Parker song. Miles Davis liked the album, so when Columbia asked Davis to record a Christmas song in 1962, Davis turned to Dorough for lyrics and singing duties. The result was "Blue Xmas," released on Columbia's Jingle Bell Jazz compilation.

Among Dorough’s other illustrious songwriting collaborators over the years have been Fran Landesman and Dave Frishberg. His tunes now appear on albums recorded by dozens of other vocalists – and many have found special favor as instrumentals, too.
Gen-Xers know his voice – if not his name – because they love the "Schoolhouse Rock" videos that entertained them on ABC-TV during the 70s, 80s and 90s. Dorough handled the music for about fifty of these timeless little classics, including “Three is a Magic Number.”

These days, Dorough – a proud inductee into the Arkansas Jazz Hall of Fame – does a bit of organic gardening at his Pennsylvania farmette. He's still writing great songs, too. Most important, though, he continues to delight audiences in clubs and concert halls on several continents. As throngs of admirers worldwide can testify, at the age of 85, Bob Dorough is only now reaching his prime.

About Sol Rouge
Sol Rouge is a family estate vineyard and winery located in the Red Hills Appellation at elevations over 1800 feet. North of Napa Valley in the foothills of the dormant volcano which formed the North Coast wine country, this land contains rich, red volcanic soil and, from this unique profile, Sol Rouge derived its name – translating to “Red Soil” in French. This 70 acre estate is currently planted with Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Counoise, Petite Syrah, Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc and will soon be planted with Cinsault. Nestled between Mt. Konocti and Benson Ridge in the Mayacamas Mountain range, this aggressive sight is all hillside with slopes up to 60% and is said to be the most tightly planted vineyard in the Red Hills, with nearly 6000 vines per hectare in some blocks.

Sol Rouge is focused on producing wines from the grape varietals of Southern France's Rhone and Bordeaux regions. To his daughters, it seemed that he was at the center of everything important that had ever happened. But when they were growing up, Kunstler represented some of the most unpopular members of society: people accused of rape, terrorism, organized crime and cop killing.

In this time, he has built a diverse and accomplished biography. Shelby was bandleader of Columbia Records and GRP Impulse! Recording Artists Black/Note and is currently the Artistic Director and leader of The Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra, The Marcus Shelby Septet and the Marcus Shelby Trio. In addition, Shelby holds an instructor position at the Berkeley Young Musician Program, San Francisco State University and the Stanford Jazz Workshop and is the 2006 Fellow in the Resident Dialogues Program of the Committee for Black Performing Arts at Stanford University. As the 1991 winner of the Charles Mingus Scholarship, Shelby’s studies include work under the tutelage of composer James Newton and legendary bassist Charlie Haden. Recent honors include the City Flight Magazine 2005 award as one of the “Top Ten Most Influential African Americans in the Bay Area”.

Marcus Anthony Shelby
Born in February 1966, Marcus Shelby has been playing the acoustic bass for 23 years. In this time, he has built a diverse and accomplished biography. Shelby was bandleader of Columbia Records and GRP Impulse! Recording Artists Black/Note and is currently the Artistic Director and leader of The Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra, The Marcus Shelby Septet and the Marcus Shelby Trio. In addition, Shelby holds an instructor position at the Berkeley Young Musician Program, San Francisco State University and the Stanford Jazz Workshop and is the 2006 Fellow in the Resident Dialogues Program of the Committee for Black Performing Arts at Stanford University. As the 1991 winner of the Charles Mingus Scholarship, Shelby’s studies include work under the tutelage of composer James Newton and legendary bassist Charlie Haden. Recent honors include the City Flight Magazine 2005 award as one of the “Top Ten Most Influential African Americans in the Bay Area”.
