Nov 19, 2009: CMT ON TOUR 2009: Jamey Johnson and Randy Houser at The Center

CMT on Tour Hits the Road With Hitmakers Jamey Johnson and Randy Houser. After years of writing songs together, longtime friends Jamey Johnson and Randy Houser join forces on the road as headliners of CMT's eighth annual tour coming to the Centre on Saturday, December 19 at 8:00pm.

'This tour is about 50 combined years in the making,' said Houser. 'I've been playing on the road since I was 15. Jamey and I both have been picking these guitars as long as we've been able to hold 'em. This is a chance to show the rest of the world how far we've come. 'Johnson could be basking in his songwriting accolades, but he remains a restlessly creative maverick. Since the release of his critically acclaimed Mercury Records debut, That Lonesome Song, he has been featured in Rolling Stone, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today and the Los Angeles Times.

2009 is proving to be a banner year for Johnson. He garnered three Grammy nominations, his hit single, 'In Color,' won song of the year honors at the ACM awards and That Lonesome Song went on to become Johnson's first gold album.

The Los Angeles Times says Universal South's Houser is adding 'grit to the genre' on his exceptional debut album Anything Goes, which has positioned the Mississippi-born, soul-drenched country singer and songwriter to become one of the next big artists to emerge in the genre. As a recording artist and live performer, Houser has quickly earned a reputation for having one of the strongest voices in Nashville and is the only new male artist that has reached Top 10 since February 2008.

Tickets go On Sale Saturday, November 7 at 10:00am. Seats are $23. All tickets are subject to Ticketmaster Fees, Handling Charges and Facility Fees.

Dec 1, 2009: Sound Advice: Finding Success in the Era of New Media at Washtenaw Community College - Morris Lawrence Building

Washtenaw Community College’s Music Performance program offers Sound Advice: Finding Success in the Era of New Media, a free panel discussion Tuesday, December 1 in room 101 of the Morris Lawrence Building. The event is from 3 – 5 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

“Dramatic changes in technology and the poor economy mean there are fewer and fewer live music venues and CD sales. Musicians need to learn to use social media sites like YouTube, Facebook and MySpace to reach and develop their fan base,” says John E. Lawrence, head of the Music Performance program. “We have four highly-regarded music producers speaking at the event. Each one is an expert in using the Internet to build audience and revenues.”

The four panelists will include:

· Luis Resto, Grammy award-winning music producer who has worked with Madonna, Eminem and many others.

· Sam Valenti, president of Ghostly Records and a leader in the Detroit Techno scene.

· Chris Rizik, founder of SoulTracks.com the number one soul music web site in America.

· Don Kline Marketing Director for Fleming Artists, an agency representing some of the best touring musicians in the world.

The third in the yearly series, Sound Advice brings seasoned music professionals to emerging local musicians in an open environment. Some of the specific topics covered in this panel discussion are: Finding your niche; Identifying and reaching your audience; Promoting yourself; Using your audience as your street team; and Reaching record labels, media companies, and other music marketing avenues. If you have the songs, but you are confused about how to develop an audience and us the Internet to sell CDs or downloads, then this conference is for you.

Reservations are recommended but not required. For more information or to make a reservation please call (734) 677-5146.
Rob Berliner, Andrew Gray and Sean Hoots return as the core trio of string slingers and harmonious vocalizers, co-producing in collaboration with Bill Moriarity (Dr. Dog, Man Man) at Philadelphia’s American Diamond studio. The results speak for themselves in tones ranging from the triumphant to the dulcet.

Feb 25, 2010: FELA! on Broadway at Eugene O'Neill Theatre

A provocative hybrid of dance and Broadway musical, FELA! features the Afrobeat music of Fela Anikulapo–Kuti, a book by Jim Lewis and the direction and choreography of Tony® Award winner Bill T. Jones.

His Passion Ignited a Generation.
His Music Fueled a Revolution.
His Legacy Inspires the World.

FELA! uses stirring Afrobeat music (a blend of jazz, funk and African rhythm and harmonies), to tell the story of Kuti’s controversial life as artist, political activist and revolutionary musician. Featuring many of Fela Kuti’s most captivating songs and Bill T. Jones’s visionary staging, FELA! is the most original new musical on Broadway.

Come for the music. Come for the dancing. Come awaken your soul.
GUITARIST MIKE STERN PLAYS WITH TALENTED FRIENDS IN A BIG NEIGHBORHOOD

Guest artists on new recording include Steve Vai, Eric Johnson, Esperanza Spalding, Richard Bona, Randy Brecker, Medeski Martin & Wood, Cindy Blackman and others

Five-time GRAMMY® nominated guitarist Mike Stern’s music has always come from a colorful and diverse part of town – a place where numerous artistic styles converge to create a fresh sound that’s rooted in jazz but refuses to adhere to rigid borders. Since his earliest recordings, this former bandmate of Miles Davis, Jaco Pastorius, Billy Cobham and other high-profile innovators has grafted elements of rock, blues, soul and more to his solid jazz foundations. On Stern’s street, anybody who brings a sense of energy, eclecticism and passion to the craft of music is welcome to play.

Stern invites fans and newcomers alike into his rich and diverse little corner of the world with the August 11, 2009, worldwide release of Big Neighborhood (HUCD 3157) on Heads Up International, a division of Concord Music Group. Aiding Stern in this latest chapter of his never-ending quest for the new and better groove is a long list of talented guests: guitarists Steve Vai and Eric Johnson; bassist-vocalists Esperanza Spalding and Richard Bona; jamband godfathers Medeski Martin & Wood; drummers Dave Weckl, Terri Lyne Carrington, Cindy Blackman and Lionel Cordew; bassists Chris Minh Doky and Lincoln Goines, and several others.

With a crew this large and diverse, the idea of the album title should be pretty clear, says Stern. “Music is like a big neighborhood – a place where anything and everything can happen,” he explains. “You can find all kinds of things in a big neighborhood – all kinds of different people, all kinds of different ideas and perspectives, and of course, all kinds of different sounds.”

With all of this going on in a single recording, Stern’s primary objective was to capture the energy as live as possible, with few if any overdubs. This was no easy task, as a few of the artists had schedules that prohibited meeting in a central location. Consequently, while Stern was able to record a good part of the album in his hometown of New York City, he had to travel (with rhythm section) to Austin, Texas to record with Eric Johnson, and then to Los Angeles to record with Steve Vai and Dave Weckl. In the end, the album’s eleven tracks came together in a neighborhood that spans two coasts with a stop in the Lone Star State.

“This record is in a lot of places – not just in terms of where it was recorded, but in the various voices and styles that are represented,” says Stern. “There’s jazz here, there’s rock, there’s Latin, there are elements of Middle Eastern music. I dig records like that. Basically, I guess the thread that hopefully holds all this together is the fact that I wrote all the tunes on this project, I play on all of them, and the concept of how all this fits together is mine with some great help from the guy that produced the record, Jim Beard. I hear it when I’m writing. I’ll think, ‘This song has kind of an African groove, so I should get Richard Bona to play on it,’ or ‘This song has a melodic groove, which is perfect for Esperanza.’ I just follow my instincts and pick the tunes that will all work together on one record, and will show off what each person can do.”

Dec 11, 2009: Mike Stern featuring Randy Brecker, Dave Weckl and Tom Kennedy at Yoshi's

Dec 14, 2009: SoVoSo at Yoshi's

8pm show $16
10pm show $10

"SoVoSó is tight, soulful, and a whole lotta fun."
-Bobby McFerrin

SoVoSó is a highly imaginative a cappella ensemble that sings a unique, rhythmic mix of jazz, gospel, world and R&B music, all rendered in their trademark improvisational style.

The SoVoSó repertoire consists of original compositions and other songs that present a global perspective, from Afro-Latin idioms to traditional funk and jazz arrangements. Two SoVoSó members (Joey Blake, past member, and current member David Worm) are current members of Bobby McFerrin's a cappella group, Voicestra, performing with him from 1993 to present.

Currently you will see David Worm, Sunshine Becker, Bryan Dyer and Zoe Ellis in this vocal band line-up, along with other great singers such as Nicolas Bearde, Ashling Cole and Vernon Bush. The SoVoSo family of singers continues to expand as this one of a kind musical project grows and flourishes. The band is current working on new material for an album to be released in 2010.

As SoVoSó ("from the Soul to the Voice to the Song"), the ensemble has continued to pioneer new horizons in contemporary vocal performance, bringing traditional world rhythms into the 21st century. According to the San Jose Mercury News, "The extraordinary richness and brilliance of this virtuoso vocalism lifts you into a special realm."
Saturday December 12, 2009
10:00 am - 4:00 pm
In San Diego (location will be provided when you RSVP)

Send yourself into the New Year with the momentum you need to soar in 2010. Please join us at a special all-day intensive workshop with the Ardavany Approach. The Ardavany Approach is a unique method for enhancing perception and creative expression. This workshop will provide a foundation for beginners, an opportunity for in-depth exploration for the intermediate or advanced actor, and new insight into the creative process for the non-acting artists. We have had many "artists" (teachers, yoga instructors, life coaches, etc.) achieve major breakthroughs for themselves just by attending this workshop.

During the workshop, you will have an opportunity to blend conscious breathing techniques, cold reading, scene study, interactive exercises, on-camera experience, and other tools to help you:
•	Know yourself, without buffers, and deeply understand your character.
•	Establish a clear, trusted connection with your imagination.
•	Understand the elements that make up action.
•	Ace the audition and get the job.
•	Master your relationship with the camera.
•	Impact your audience.
•	Continuously enrich your performance.

Tom Ardavany, a charismatic, spiritual soul with a talent for teaching, developed the Ardavany Approach over 15 years of practicing as an actor, director, and teacher. He has led 5 of his acting clients on to win two Golden Globe and three Emmy awards. His clients have included Josh Holloway (ABC’s Lost), Rudy Reyes (HBO’s “Generation Kill”), and Matt Gerald (Avatar).

Workshop fee: $100
