Los Angeles based band Orgone is many souls with a cosmic connection, a natural creative force and musicians who have played together for years. They are self schooled and continue to shape their musical voice as a solid unit of guys who hang, spin records and jam out their shared inspirations. With a rooted sense of funk, soul, afrobeat, deep rhythms and an intimate understanding of dj culture as well as each others’ individual talents, Orgone seamlessly slides through multiple styles and dynamic performances. The group continuously injects whatever they play with a heavy brand of raw funk power.
At the core of the band is a rhythm section comprised of close friends who have played together for more than 10 years. Having grown artistically as a unit they function as one organic and intuitive whole. The orginal 5-member band started out by putting their own gritty takes on tunes by the likes of the JBs, the Meters, Booker T. and the MGs, Grant Green and Funkadelic among many others. They quickly gained underground respect and die hard fans. With their searing live sets and original instrumentals, Orgone soon released their debut self titled CD, “Orgone,” in 2002. The result was a collection of all original down home, transcendental, tough and gritty funk instrumentals.
The band fast grew to include a powerful three-piece horn section and a fiery soul singer who all shared the same spirit and deep reverence for the music that inspired them. Singer, Fanny Franklin, joined the groups’ recordings after they were floored seeing her perform with Dakah, the 30-piece hip hop orchestra, and asked her to record with them. Their first recording together, Orgone’s cover of “Funky Nassau”, became a ubiquitous DJ fave worldwide- first appearing on 7”(Nuff Rope) and then getting a 12” club re-edit by renowned dj Danny Krivit (Nuff Rope). It then appeared on Ubiquity’s Rewind Volume 4 comp, which began the band’s relationship with the prestigious label.
Gaining worldwide recognition for their raw studio recordings and exciting live sets led to the release of “The Killion Floor” on Ubiquity records- a full length album of hard hitting afro-soul & funk from the 9 piece band. While enjoying comparisons to classic acts like Rufus, War & Mandrill, or modern funk staples like Sharon Jones or Breakestra, they’re quick to point out that Orgone is unique.

Orgone backs this up by taking the listener on a musical journey from the sound of Los Angeles to horn and percussion driven Lagos to a New York club and to the raw sounds of New Orleans. The title of the album “The Killion Floor” is derived from the Orgone apartment/studio facility where the majority of the album was recorded. Singer Franklin delivers monster performances on tracks like the Memphis-drenched “Who Knows Who,” the laid-back and cosmic “Said and Done,” and the apocalyptic sound of “Do Your Thing”. The album also features guest appearances by singer Noelle Scaggs (from the Rebirth), trumpeter/arranger Todd Simon (Dapkings, Antibalas, CPK, Breakestra), and guitarist/producer Dan Ubick (CPK/ Lions).
The band’s reputation amongst the funk, soul, and hip hop fraternity is further backed-up by an impressive and ever growing resume that expands their reach. This includes a spot in an Adidas campaign, a tour with and backing band for Bun B(from UGK), Pharoahe Monch, Plantlife (including a BBC performance for Jools Holland), Little Brother, Nice and Smooth, Black Sheep and New Orleans funk legend Eddie Bo at a Hurricane Katrina benefit. Members of Orgone also have featured in the make-up of Ubiquity acts the Lions, Connie Price and the Keystones, Breakestra, and have performed with the Pharcyde, De La Soul, Too Short, Macy Gray among many others. To top it off, most of the group can be heard on recent major recordings by Alicia Keys, Estelle, Anthony Hamilton, Jennifer Hudson, Solange Knowles and many other R&B/Soul artists.
Orgone continues to tour, impressing audiences and winning new fans at festivals & clubs nationally and overseas. 2009 saw the release of their second fully independent CD “bacano”, a collection of all original cold-blooded funk gems representing what’s always been going down in Orgone’s funky, sweaty home-grown recording spot. It’s a recorded history of the band and its musical family throwing down: check the lethal neck-busting bass intro of founding member Tim Glum on “You Already Doin It”, the Detroit thump of bassist Dale Jennings on the deep hypnotic funk soundscape of “Vibromeyer”, the dance floor soul of singer Gino Garafalo on the undeniably hip-shaking “Come Around” and the sub-atomic gut punch of Orgone bassist Ethan Phillips on the heavy psychedelic groove of “Hott Karl”.

A monstrous debut from one of the heaviest acts we’ve heard in years — LA’s Orgone, easily one of the most up-and-coming funky combos around! Although Orgone share a bit with some of the leaner deep funk groups who’ve cropped up in the past decade or so, they’ve also got a sound that’s a bit more advanced overall — sort of that second-generation approach to funk that hit the scene by the mid 70s, as some of the bigger funk acts like Black Heat or War moved out of the indie scene and really started to hit a wider audience! That doesn’t mean that Orgone’s commercial at all — because they’ve got a sound that’s still as sharp-edged as any smaller group — but with a lineup that’s quite large, they’re able to encompass a very wide range of soulful styles — gritty 45 riffing, slinky Chicano-styled grooves, Afro Funk, tighter soul tracks, and lots lots more — all carried off with perfection throughout. Lee Coombs Bio:
Bending boundaries and ignoring the status quo – where would the Breakbeat scene be today without Lee Coombs. For over a decade this British producer has been at the forefront of it all; releasing groundbreaking mix CDs, remixing the world’s most acclaimed artists and knocking out dancefloor destroying productions that are considered classics years after their release.

A seasoned veteran, Coombs first hit the DJ slopes in 1989, bathing himself in the acid house scene at parties around London and Cambridge. Crucial in shaping his all-encompassing approach to DJing and production, this boundary-less approach would become Coombs’ trademark, mixing up breaks, house, electro, techno and acid with dexterous assurance.

When he is not in the producers chair, Coombs regularly tours all corners of the globe and is a bona-fide fans favourite throughout Europe, the USA, Australia, Asia and of course the UK. His popularity has also ensured his repeat appearance at infamous festival ‘The Burning Man’ in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada.

Opulent Temple Vision :: 2009
For the unexposed, the Opulent Temple started as a Large Scale Art & Music theme camp at the annual Burning Man arts festival that takes place in the Black Rock desert of Nevada the week before Labor Day. We throw nightly parties showcasing underground, world class electronic dance music in a setting of art and creation we've made ourselves. Our community and fund raising events are based in San Francisco, and though our production is associated with the BM event, we will be taking it to other settings.

The Vision of the Opulent Temple is to gift a space for sacred dance to world class dance music. It is our intention to create the space for peak experience, community development, and inspiration that serves as a road map for what's possible in the so called 'default world.' The effort is self generated by the tribe, ie., no one gets paid to create our production. On the contrary, key members put a lot of their own time, effort, and sometimes money all year around to to bring it back every year.

It's not just about partying.
It is our view social change will not happen without the individual elevation of our collective spiritual center of gravity. Thus, it is our responsibility to nudge our own evolution to catch up with the outpaced growth of technology without the soul getting left behind. It's within this community of creative seekers that coalesces around the playa tribes that leaders must emerge to help steer this nation and this world towards a better day.

To create a space for Sacred Dance is to create a playground for connection with the Eternal, but in our case, still infused with the need for social action in the real world. Big beats and community are the launching point for insight to remind us there is a point to evolution. Transcendence, and nothing less. It might sound like hippy New Age shit, but in this case that doesn't mean it isn't true...

The Musical Vision:
We're obviously firm believers in the beat, the transcending properties of mind blowing electronic dance music (EDM), both to open the heart and make the ass shake depending on one's preference and the moment. We value diversity in the range of world class artists that play our camp, as well as the camp dj's who build it so get to play what they feel. Most nights are fairly cohesive unto themselves, but day to day it can be all over the place. Our past line ups speak for themselves.

Band Of Heathens features Colin Brooks, Ed Jurdi and Gordy Quist., each one of whom sings, writes and plays lead guitar. Their finely-crafted songs and the band's distinct quality of having three front men cultivated a loyal and growing legion of fans that immediately took to the expert musicianship. In March 2007, drummer John Chipman joined the band and helped fortify their country-soul-rock-and-roll sound.

Band Of Heathens first two albums were both live affairs, 2006's Live from Momo's and 2007's Live at Antone's (which was also released on DVD), while their third, simply called The Band of Heathens, was produced by Ray Wylie Hubbard and released in 2008 on BOH Records. the event that has become NYC's mecca of global soul culture, LIBATION!

On Thursday, July 9th, the soiree that Time Out NY magazine calls "a full-on
throwdown" will act as the official opening night after party for the 3rd annual
HOUSE DANCE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE. Expect dancers from all over the
world to lose themselves in the music when resident DJ IAN FRIDAY is joined on
the decks by the man behind the acclaimed Ocha Records label, CARLOS MENA.

Event: “Weirdsville: Oddities from the Archives”. Guest curator Pete Gowdy and Oddball Films present an evening of rare, weird and some highly entertaining 16mm shorts, trailers and commercials culled from the 50,000+ archive at Oddball Films. This month’s highlights include: “Flatland”, an animated version of the famous story with Dudley Moore; “This Is Coffee!”, a celluloid love letter to our second favorite brew; “Best Foot Forward”, a boot fetishists dream; “Chickenomics”, economics explained by the San Diego Chicken; “Bird Circus”, vintage bird tricks; “Kick Me”, bizarre, funny/creepy animation; “Industry On Parade”, a 1955 space age diner; plus trailers and commercials straight out of Weirdsville!

On Saturday, July 11, Guest Curator Pete Gowdy and Oddball Films present an evening of the strange, the bizarre, and the sometimes baffling short films, commercials and trailers from deep within the Oddball archive. These “found” films surface in the process of research for other programs: too good to languish on the shelves, they demand to be screened! A monthly companion program to the Strange Sinema series. Highlights Include:

“Flatland” (Color, 1965)

Life in a two-dimensional world. Narrated by Dudley Moore (as A Square) and members of the “Beyond The Fringe” theatrical group, this early adaptation of the beloved Edwin Abbott novel was produced at Harvard’s Visual Arts Center. The story continues to delight mathematicians, philosophers and computer theorists, and was recently adapted into a musical and the 2007 feature film of the same title. Neither, however, had the wisdom of this film’s brevity, nor the genius of Dudley Moore!

“This Is Coffee!” (Color, 1961)
A more potent ode to the pleasures and proper preparation of coffee has never been filmed. A perfect blend of sprightly music (with a sprinkling of crime-jazz), stunning visuals and vintage kitchenalia that will have you jonesing for a nice, hot cup of java. A perfect, scientifically made cup of coffee. As the sonorous narrator relates: “Perfect… coffee: sending its glow into our lives around the clock”.

“Best Foot Forward” (Color, 1960’s)
Not the 1943 musical starring Lucille Ball, nor the record by REO Speedwagon, but the early 1960’s short film about Hy-Test Safety Shoes! This engaging short highlights the “Golden Shoe Club” and was filmed in stunning Kodachrome color. Lots of close-ups of shoes and boots in all their safety-toed splendor.

“Chickenomics” (Color, 1979)
“A fowl approach to economics”, this short instructional film on basic economics features the San Diego Chicken. Learn creepy economic theory like “Consumer Sovereignty” from the creepy narrator, while the Chicken does his chicken thing.

“Bird Circus” (Color, 1950’s)
Wacky bird tricks in beautiful early 50’s color. What these birds won’t do for a beakful of seed!

“Kick Me” (Color, 1975)
Weird animation of stick figure legs kicking a ball that morphs into hundreds of spiders with a surprise ending. Nominated for an Academy Award in 1976.

“Industry On Parade” (B+W, 1955)
From the famous short subject documentary series, this episode shows how the Sears Roebuck catalog was produced in the day, visits the Hershey Chocolate factory in Pennsylvania, and a new drive-in diner that uses two-way radios for car and table service, and a “pressurized cabin” dining room.

Curator Biography:
Pete Gowdy (aka DJ Chas Gaudi) is host of San Francisco’s Shellac Shack, a weekly 78 rpm listening party and a DJ specializing in vintage sounds: soul, jazz, country, punk and new wave. A graduate of the Vassar College Film Program, he is an associate producer of Marc Huestis Presents, the long-running movie legend tributes at the Castro Theatre.
