About 65 million soldiers fought, and over 9 million of them died. The war involved 36 countries around the world, including the United States, which sent 2 million men and women overseas. Although the guns fell silent on November 11, 1918, peace did not officially come until the following year. The Museum is dedicated to sharing the stories of those who experienced this global disaster, the consequences of which are still with us.

Guitar flat-picker extraordinaire Scott Fore is creating an on-going audio/video archive and performance series that features a range of noteworthy musicians in various parts of this region who have made significant contributions to the lexicon of American Roots music. These sought-after musicians live in work in places as diverse as the area itself -- from the Tidewater and coastal plains to the Piedmont and Mountain states of the Mid-Atlantic and South -- from peaks to shore. Taking shape in a variety of forms, the archive is meant to record and perhaps re-introduce audiences to the rich legacy of music that surrounds us, allowing us to learn more about what makes these musicians do what they do best and celebrate their unique gifts. The aim of this project is to locate and identify those unique qualities that characterize these individuals as artists as opposed to mere musical technicians.

Acharaya Arawana Hayashi is a dancer, choreographer, and multi-disciplinary teacher, with roots in Asian and Western arts. Throughout her career she has been involved in interdisciplinary, ensemble improvisation. She began her dance training in classical ballet, culminating in studies with Nina Fonaroff in New York, and later trained in modern dance at the Merce Cunningham Studio. Arawana was on the faculty of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School and the Naropa University, Boulder, Colorado. As an acharaya, or senior teacher in the Shambhala Buddhist tradition, she teaches courses on Buddhism, Shambhala Art, Shambhala Training, and secular meditation programs for developing the human potential for awakened confidence. Arawana’s workshops have been presented in educational institutions, meditation centers, and organizational settings in the U.S. and Canada.256256256

Guest curator Martha Sielman has assembled a seminal collection of representative works by master art quilters, explored in this exhibition and in Sielman’s companion book, Masters: Art Quilts. This expansive look at state of the art quilting brings together works by artists from around the world.

The exhibition shows not only the wide geographic reach of quilting, but also its thematic range. From energetic sculptural works to deeply personal portraits, from meticulous visual narratives to enigmatic still-lives, art quilting embraces as many diverse forms as contemporary painting or sculpture. The Vineyards Wine Shop will be holding a Wine Tasting at Golds Gym in Middletown on Sunday, November 22, 2009 from 1:30pm-4:30pm.
You will be able to savor dozens of great wines from around the world and tasty hors d' oeuvres. The Vineyards promises the afternoon to be a memorable event, "filled with fine friends, fine hors d'oeuvres and of course fine wine.” The suggested donation for the Wine Tasting is $15 per person.
All donations will go to benefit Shoes That Fit. Shoes That Fit is a non-profit organization that strives to build the self-esteem of children in need by providing them with new shoes for school. The success of Shoes That Fit began in 1992 helping children at one elementary school in Pomona, CA. Today they provide items through over 850 elementary schools in 35 states. Located just northwest of Vancouver Island, they support globally and nationally significant populations of seabirds, including Cassin’s Auklets, Rhinoceros Auklets, and Tufted Puffins. These seabirds are threatened by commercial shipping, pollution, invasive species, and fishing by-catch.

Please join us for an evening visit to the Scott Islands with Dr. Art Martell, the former Regional Director General for Environment Canada. An active birder around the world, Art has worked with the Commission for Environmental Cooperation on conservation of birds in Canada, Mexico and the United States, and is active in Bird Studies Canada and the BC Breeding Bird Atlas. BRUNO PRONSATO

Seattle producer Bruno Pronsato (aka Steven Ford) took several giant steps in 2005 toward the peak of the experimental techno mountain. Both on vinyl and onstage, Pronsato kept up a hectic pace of production and performance, catalyzing listeners and crowds in Germany, Switzerland, Turkey, Mexico, throughout the United States, and a triumphant set at Montreal’s Mutek festival. Last year his solo album “Why Can’t We Be Like Us” received both widespread support from fans and critics alike. In addition, his twelve-inches on esteemed labels like Orac, Perlon, Hello? Repeat, Musique Risquée, Milnor Modern, Philpot, and Telegraph further elevated his stature and built his international profile. A sound scientist whose work is equally playful and rigorous, Pronsato deploys a canny use of space and idiosyncratically fashioned rhythms to disorient and build suspense—like some 21st-century Miles Davis or Eric Dolphy of the laptop. Despite being a minimal-techno artist, Pronsato offers a palette that’s as full of unexpected patterns and meticulously rendered textures as a Wassily Kandinsky painting.

Pronsato’s compositions unsettle in original ways, yet they also slyly tickle funny bones. Often both humorous and erotic, his cuts are the wild cards that adventurous DJs pull out when they want to take the dance floor to strange new levels of motion. Therefore, Pronsato’s releases have become elite selectors’ secret weapons of beguilingly baffling quirkiness that still move asses.

Kenneth James Gibson is a man of many personas. Keeping up with him can be a time consuming, yet rewarding venture into sound. As soon as you think you know him and can grasp what’s going on, he puts on yet another mask and becomes something else. Always a surprise and never a let down, he gives us what we want but don’t expect. A rare stone in today’s musical climate, Ken is rolling and collects no moss.

Kens first recordings were as the guitarist, singer, part time keyboardist and producer of the 90s indie rock band Furry Things. He slowly grew tired of being in a band and started producing a slew of electronic mish mash on his own as Eight Frozen Modules. Starting out with a guitar, half broken sampler (given to him by King Coffee of the legendary Texas band The Butthole Surfers), a drum machine, borrowed synths and a four track, Ken laid down an off kilter mix of electro, abstract hip hop, dub and techno.

In 1997, Ken moved from Austin Texas to the big city of Los Angeles, California. After releasing a few records as Eight Frozen Modules on various labels such as Trance Syndicate and City Slang, he gave up the 4 tracks and guitar for a desktop computer and software. While taking a few years off from releasing music, he learned how to create a new world in the land of computers. After 3 years of not leaving his padded studio cell, he resurfaced with the 2001 Eight Frozen Modules CD Random Activities and Broken Sunsets, a mix of glitched out electro, techno, and idm for the LA label, Phthalo. Since then, he has also released music under the names [a]pendics.shuffle, The Premature Wig, dubLoner, Electronic Music Composer, Reverse Commuter, Bal Cath, Hiss and Buzz (with Jack Dangers of Meat Beat Manifesto), Kenneth James G., KJ Gibbs, Whoa Buck, Cascabel Gentz (with Argentine Dilo), Men In Slippers (with Mikael Stavostrand) for labels such as Mo's Ferry Productions, Adjunct, We Are, Lick My Deck, Revolver, Leftroom, Resopal, Floppy Funk, Underl_ne, Orac, Mille Plateaux, Planet-Mu, Proptronix, Titbit, Force Tracks, Disco Inc., and Sunset Diskos....just to name a few. When Kenneth isn't in the studio reeking havoc on his neighbors, he is touring the world playing his music for the crazy kids late at night. Ken lives in Los Angeles, California and co-runs the label Adjunct, part of the Kompakt family. Adjunct is a forward thinking techno and house label releasing such artists as Mikael Stavostrand, Dilo and Gurtz, Mathias Schaffhauser, Sutekh, Franco Cinelli, Kit Clayton, Peter F. Spiess and many more.

Kenneth just finished up a big remix / live project with Crostown Rebels main man Damian Lazarus, which you can hear in Damian's latest live sets. Some of this material will also be making it to vinyl in the near future. Kenneth has also finished up his full length Reverse Commuter LP and EP's for DJ Three’s label Hallucination Limited, which will be out very soon, along with some excellent remixes. The Reverse Commuter live set at WMC 2009 was listed as Mr. C's (Superfreq) favorite set of the conference. Also in the works is a Kenneth James G. house influenced EP and LP for new LA label Culprit, a label run by the Droog folks. Another venture is the latest project Cascabel Gentz. This is a duo consisting of Kenneth and Dilo from Argentina. The 2 latest Cascabel EP's have been getting rave reviews from play from such DJ's as Luciano, Tim Xavier, Shonky, Brothers Vibe and many more.

Dec 5, 2009: Hike: Ramapo Mountain - Young Professionals at Ramapo Mountain State Forest

Calling those who still want to get outside in spite of the chill in the air! This moderate loop hike will lead us around the scenic Ramapo lake. We will also climb trough the ruins of an old stone castle and take in some panoramic views as well. Hot chocolate afterwards is optional but strongly encouraged!

Specs:
The hike is classified as moderate and is about 3.2 miles long.
The hike should take 2-3 hours.
As with all hikes you must be in good, athletic shape.

Post-Hike Lunch and Drinks:
Traditionally the group goes out together for lunch and drinks after all hikes. Details will be provided at the end of the hike.

RSVP (to the right) and we will let you know when tix are almost gone, when prices are going up, if there are any changes, etc.

Member Cost:
$5 for the first 10 to buy a ticket
$10 for the next 11-25 to buy a ticket
$20 at the door (so please register online)

Non-Member Cost:

Sweeper:
If our hiking group is large we might look for 2 volunteers to act as sweepers. Sweepers will walk at the end of the hike line and will make sure the group stays together.

Hike Leader:
Noah will be leading this hike.

What to bring:
Warm layers that you can take off and put on easily.
Hiking boots and water (required).
Snacks, a light lunch, etc.
Toilet paper, tissues, plastic bags for garbage, etc.

Take Interstate Route 287 to Exit 57 (Skyline Drive) and proceed north on Skyline Drive. Just ahead on the left is the Ramapo Mountain State Forest parking area.

John Hafernik joins us to speak on whether or not the green roof of the California Academy of Sciences provides habitat for native insects. Hafernik shares his findings on the insects that dwell on the green roof and if they differ from those found in other parts of Golden Gate Park.

John Hafernik is Professor of Biology at San Francisco State University where he studies the evolution, ecology and conservation biology of insects. He was elected a Fellow of the California Academy of Sciences in 1982 and has served the Academy in many roles since including his current role as President of the Board of Trustees. In terms of San Francisco Natural History, he and his students have conducted a number of arthropod diversity studies in the Presidio over the last 15 years.

ABOVE & BEYOND BIO:
Above & Beyond is a trance music group formed in 2000. The group is famous for remixes and their own productions. The group’s tracks are regularly played by well-known DJs, such as Tiësto, Armin van Buuren and Paul van Dyk. They are also known under other aliases, like Tranquility Base, OceanLab, Dirt Devils and Rollerball.

Jono Grant and Paavo Siljamäki met at Westminster University, and they set up the Anjunabeats label in the summer 1999 with the release of the “Anjunabeats Volume 1”. The song received the immediate attention of various dance clubs, and quickly gained support from Pete Tong, Paul Oakenfold and Paul van Dyk.

Above & Beyond came together in 2000 when producer Tony McGuinness called in Jono and Paavo to help him complete the Chakra remix while he was still working at Warners. The inspiration for name Above & Beyond came from a web page belonging to an American motivational trainer called Jono Grant which was stuck on the wall of the studio. Although they were unknown at the time, the Above & Beyond remix of Chakra ‘Home’ was picked over remixes by Rob Searle and Tilt to be the A side mix, and after plays on Pete Tong reached number one in the UK club charts.

In 2006 they released a full artist album called “Tri-state”, defined by DJMAG as a” big progress for the trance genre “, it features collaborations with the likes of Zoe Johnston, Richard Bedford and Andy Moor, known for his work with Tilt and as half of Leama & Moor. The first single from the album, “Air For Life” (featuring Andy Moor), was released in July ‘05. New single “Alone Tonight” was released in November ‘05.

Their show, TRANCE AROUND THE WORLD can be listened on Digitally Imported Radio.
