Oct 17, 2008: Gallery Reception - Castelo, Mandell, Melhop: 3 Contemporary Photographers at ArtHaus66 Gallery

Photographer Jill Greenberg (Montreal 1967) once said that “a photograph is not necessarily the “truth”; it doesn’t necessarily prove that anything happened”.

In Castelo, Mandell, Melhop: 3 Contemporary Photographers we are witnesses to snippets of the truth. Furtive glimpses of things that have been or perhaps things that will be….Timeless images. Versions of the “truth” filtered through the imagination of these artists.

Oct 17, 2008: 'Oh my, a Pie', recent paintings by Christian Spruell at Bucheon Gallery

"Oh My, a Pie"
recent paintings by
Christian Spruell

Exhibition: October 17-November 15, 2008
Reception: Friday, October 17, 2008, 6-8pm
Bucheon is proudly presenting "Oh My, a Pie" the paintings of Christian Spruell, opening Friday October 17, 2008, with a reception for the artist from 6pm until 8pm.

This will be the fourth exhibition for Christian at the gallery with his first show shortly after he graduated from San Francisco Art Institute. Christian has stayed true to his passion and continues to make challenging and moving work without gimmicks or following the current trends. His painting has been reviewed in Art in America, Artweek, and multiple periodicals who note his technical skill and mastery of color.

Christian describes the show as a haphazard intentional display of whimsical grit. In the most recent chapter of paintings, the artist returns to the figurative form in brut fashion. "Oh My, a Pie" is a series of paintings that are an absurdist construction of subtle and humorous details presented like a bull wandering through a porcelain forest. Influences range from early folk art and South American graffiti to the work of Jean Dubuffet and Diane Arbus. Each painting is a paint lover's event in which each picture tells a story of tragedy, humor, irony, leisure and the observation of perverse privacy.

No charge.

Oct 11, 2008: Artist Carlos Luna: Gallery Talk with the Artist and Curator at Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale

Meet Artist Carlos Luna and learn more about the new exhibition of ceramics and paintings
MOA members free, non-members free with paid exhibition admission.
For more information, contact (954) 525-5500 ext 241 or e-mail education1@moafl.org

Read more about artist/paintings: We are pleased to introduce the Museum’s 2008-2009 Artist in Residence - Carlos Luna. Luna’s work is bold and heraldic with a distinctly Latino vernacular. A gifted storyteller, his art channels his life and times from Cuba to Mexico to the United States. Part of that personal history has to do with the artist’s admiration for Pablo Picasso, which led to a conversation about the Spanish master’s ceramics in the Museum’s collection.

Bernie Bercuson, a Miami Beach hotelier, very generously donated a collection of 66 editioned ceramics by Picasso in 1991. Brilliantly conceived and impeccably fabricated, these multiples of plates, platters, and plaques are decorated in Picasso’s inimitable style with bullfights, dancers, and Don Quixote; while pitchers, tankards, and vases are equally deftly transformed into owls and beautiful women. Just as Picasso first learned from, then transformed the art of the past, contemporary artists continue to engage with the art of Picasso (directly or indirectly) as exhibitions, catalogues, and articles over recent years attest.

For his Artist in Residence exhibition, Luna chose to create this installation that combines his recent paintings with a personally selected group of fifty Picasso ceramics from the Museum’s collection and which underscore the graphic and decorative quality in his own work. There are subjects – owls, roosters, and male and female protagonists – that one finds in both artists’ work. But Picasso / Luna is less an exercise in finding sources of influence, than simply creating an exciting new channel of communication between the works of two artists. More at http://www.moafl.org/exhi_luna.htm
Pablo PICASSO Ceramics | Carlos LUNA Paintings is on view through February 23, 2009.

Oct 9, 2008: The Violet Hour at University of Washington - Henry Art Gallery

The violet hour is dusk, a temporal bridge from the clarity of daylight to the obfuscation of night. Here, three artists -- Matthew Day Jackson, Jen Liu and David Maljkovic -- contemplate a "prodigal generation" that will emerge from the socio-political strife and environmental degradation now accumulating on the global stage. Distressed by fallout from these events, this generation possesses a physical and emotional weariness, and a sense of cultural amnesia; their existential wanderings reflect the profound disconnect between many facets of contemporary life and the lessons of historical precedents. Each artist has been invited to create a discrete installation.
