Jun 14, 2012: Derrick Jensen: Civilization and Resistance at M.L. King Middle School

Derrick Jensen is the most potent voice of the growing deep ecology movement.
Winner of numerous awards and honors including the Eric Hoffer Book Award and Press Action's Person of the Year, he is the author of some fifteen books, including Endgame, A Language Older Than Words, The Culture of Make Believe, Walking on Water: Reading, Writing, and Revolution, and the new Derrick Jensen Reader: Writings on Environmental Revolution.

Derrick Jensen is a force for the common good. His books are mandatory reading in the study of culture and change. He is a contemporary philosopher with his feet firmly on the ground". - Terry Tempest Williams

Jensen raises vital questions that must be asked, and moreover, that must be answered. In this mad venture, we are all complicit, if only in our silence. Jensen shatters this silence." - Mumia Abu-Jamal

If any voice can help us break free of this culture of denial, this is it. Stunningly original, grippingly personal, this book will shock you to your core while at the same time quickening your deepest yearnings for reconnection with the Earth and all its creatures, Jensen has achieved the impossible: a book that is simultaneously horrifying and uplifting, terrifying and beautiful. I could not put it down. Passages will stay with me forever." - Frances Moore Lappe

Hosted by Claire Cummings. Claire Cummings is an author, journalist, lawyer, and lifelong social activist. Her book Uncertain Peril won the 2009 American Book Award and an award by the Society for Economic Botany. She has been honored for radio journalism and awarded a Kellogg Food and Society Fellowship.

May 29, 2012: Litquake's Epicenter: A Night of Edith Piaf at Tosca Cafe

Litquake and City Lights Books present an evening of readings and music celebrating the life of Edith Piaf with Carolyn Burke, author of "No Regrets: The Life of Edith Piaf," and musical accompaniment from chanteuse Betty Roi.

The iconic French singer comes to life in Carolyn Burke's biography, which captures Edith Piaf's immense charisma along with the time and place that gave rise to her international career. Raised by turns in a brothel, a circus caravan, and a working-class Parisian neighborhood, Piaf began singing on the city's streets, where she was discovered by a Champs Elysees cabaret owner. She became a star almost overnight, seducing all of Paris with her passionate voice, and "No Regrets" explores her meteoric rise; her tumultuous love affairs; and her struggles with drugs, alcohol, and illness. Piaf was an unlikely student of poetry and philosophy who aided Resistance efforts in World War II, wrote the lyrics for nearly 100 songs, including "La vie en rose," and was a crucial mentor to younger singers such as Yves Montand and Charles Aznavour. Burke demonstrates how, with her courage, her incomparable art, and her universal appeal, "the little sparrow" endures as a symbol of France and a source of inspiration to entertainers the world over.

Carolyn Burke is the author of "Lee Miller: A Life" (Knopf) hailed as a New York Times Notable Book of the Year and a finalist for The National Book Critics Circle Biography award. She is also the author of "Becoming Modern: The Life of Mina Loy" (Farrar, Straus & Giroux).

Betty Roi is an authentic Parisian chanteuse. Her musical training has taken her around the world from Spain to Israel, Paris to San Francisco.

The Epicenter embraces a theater of ideas between writers and readers with a literary conversation followed by audience Q&A, book sales and signing. Admission is free, cocktails recommended. Capacity is limited, so come early.

May 31, 2012: Cubanas! Readings from Two Contemporary Cuban Women Writers! at Mission Cultural Center Theater, 2868 Mission Street @ 25th Street.

CubanaBooks, the Center for the Art of Translation, and Litquake SF present an in-person reading from two Cuban women authors, as they celebrate the first English translations of their respective works published through Cubanabooks. Mirta Yanez and Nancy Alonso (photo, right) will share readings from Yanez's "Havana is a Really Big City" and Alonso's "Disconnect/Desencuentro." Audience Q and A follows the reading.

The evening also features a live performance by the Azucar Trio--three members from Azucar Con Ache, an effervescent all-woman, Bay Area-based salsa and latin jazz ensemble.

Don't miss this special opportunity to hear two accomplished Cuban women authors and some raucous Latin rhythm!!

(Presentation in Spanish, with English translation and interpretation provided).
-----------------
About the authors and books:

Disconnect by Nancy Alonso is a collection of short stories that speaks to multiple audiences regarding the emerging feminist and LGBT communities in Cuban culture. As a creative insight into a highly restricted culture, Disconnect breaks down borders and transcends language barriers.

MIRTA YANEZ -HAVANA IS A REALLY BIG CITY

Mirta Yanez is a Havana-born poet, novelist, critic, and extraordinary writer of short fiction. Her narrative stands out by virtue of a complex yet unmistakable Cuban flavor and a characteristic preoccupation with the social, political, and economic particularities of the island and how these affect los cubanos. Themes of class, race, gender, and sexuality are artfully interwoven in humorous and poignant narratives that make the reader pause to rethink her/his views or assumptions about Cuba and about life. This groundbreaking collection of her work, most of which is available for the first time in English translation.

Jun 26, 2012: CHRIS HEDGES: Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt at M.L. King Middle School

Chris Hedges, a senior fellow with the Nation Institute and a hugely influential columnist for the progressive news site Truthdig, is a Pulitzer-Prize winning author and journalist whose books include War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning, American Fascists, and Empire of Illusion. He has spent nearly twenty years as a foreign correspondent in the most troubled areas of Central America, the Middle East, Africa, and the Balkans. He has reported on our imperial wars in the Middle East, the problems of peace in Israel and Palestine, and the abject failure of American liberalism in the face of the corporate takeover of the American government. Hedges is now a strikingly compelling spokesperson for the progressive movement in the U.S.

DAYS OF DESTRUCTION, DAYS OF REVOLT illustrates what happens when a society loses all sense of the sacred, when nothing has intrinsic worth beyond monetary values. Hedges and Sacco reflect back to America in searing portraits of its poorest, most exploited citizens, to show what we are doing to ourselves as a nation. Their collaboration considers what tens of millions of Americans will endure if this country continues to configure itself in an oligarchic system of only masters and serfs.

Hedges has sharply critiqued the Occupy Movement's acceptance of individuals concealing their faces and practicing violence. He insists that unless we begin to stand fast around moral imperatives... we will be complicit in our self-annihilation.

Jun 19, 2012: MEDEA BENJAMIN: Drone Warfare: Killing by Remote Control at The Hillside Club

Hosted by Laura Prives

The wily, nationally recognized progressive activist Medea Benjamin, cofounder of CODEPINK and Global Exchange, has been accurately described by New York Newsday as "one of America's most committed - and most effective - fighters for human rights. The Los Angeles Times describes her as "one of the high profile leaders of the peace movement." She was one of 1000 exemplary women from 140 countries nominated to receive the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of millions of women who do the essential work of peace worldwide.

Since the 9/11 tragedy, she has been working to stop the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and to promote a U.S. foreign policy respectful of human rights. Her work for justice in Israel/Palestine includes taking numerous delegations to Gaza after the 2008 Israeli invasion, organizing the Gaza Freedom March in 2010, participating in Freedom Flotillas, and opposing the policies of AIPAC. In 2011 she was in Tahrir Square during the Egyptian uprising, and in 2012 she was part of a human rights delegation to Bahrain in support of democracy activists when she was tear-gassed, arrested, and deported by the Bahraini government.

"Activist extraordinaire Medea Benjamin has documented how the U.S. government's use of drones to murder hundreds of innocent victims in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia and Yemen has increased the danger to our national security. Benjamin's Drone Warfare is the first book that reveals the vocal international citizen that challenges the legality and morality of America's extrajudicial execution drones before they begin killing here at home."
