Aug 20, 2008: August 2008 Workshop: Mobile Website Usability at University of Phoenix (San Jose Learning Center)

Mobile Website Usability
Brands on the web live and die by the quality of the user experience. As the web expands from the laptop to the handheld, the rules change and the game gets harder. To develop a meaningful and intuitive brand experience on the mobile web, designers, technologists, and business owners must consider new constraints on user interactions, and account for them in innovative ways.

As the mobile web matures, we see more and more people with their mobile devices in hand, searching for hotel rooms, reading the news, or just playing video games. People are more connected with their mobile phone today than any other electronic device they use.

But how do you connect with users through mobile web sites and create exceptional experiences that are both functional and captivating?

During 2007, Molecular conducted a unique research project which sought to explore, analyze, and understand how users are interacting with the mobile web. More specifically, this exercise looked to understand what users expect from their applications, identify common usability mistakes, and recognize emerging design patterns in the mobile Internet. This presentation will share some of Molecular's findings, and discuss the impact for companies seeking to promote their brand on the mobile web. Usability expert Evan Gerber will provide insight on what these findings mean for the future of the mobile web and how you can apply it your business and improve you mobile marketing success.

Attendees will learn:
* The common weaknesses of the mobile interface, and how to avoid them
* Best practices for creating an engaging and memorable interface on handheld devices
* Critical differences between the mobile web and traditional web experiences
* Common problems inherent in current mobile design
* How users perform tasks on handheld devices
* The difference between miniaturization and mobilization

Speaker: Evan Gerber, Senior Consultant, User Experience, Molecular

Aug 5, 2008: BayPay at Visa

Topic: Payment Partnerships

Schedule:
6pm - Networking

6:30pm - Introduction by Daniel Chatelain, V.P. of Strategic
Alliances and Partnerships at QSecure, Inc.

6:30pm - Presentation on Business Partnerships from David Snyder, Sr.
Manager Global Payments Platform at Apple, Inc.

7:00pm - Networking

7:30pm - Panel discussion

Payments Partnerships:
It seems that nearly every day, there's news about a partnership
being formed in the payments space. Credit card companies and
technology vendors. Banks and service providers. Companies in one
country with companies in another. Why all this activity? More
importantly, if there's partnering to be done, what's the best way to
go about it?

Strategic alliances may be a better phrase to encompass the ways
organizations get together for mutual advantage. Two companies may
form an alliance to enhance each other's ability to serve new
markets. Sometimes there are joint R&D projects to create products or
services that neither organization could develop alone. Licensing is
a way for a small company to find a broader market for its products,
or for a larger company to fill in a gap in its offerings without
having to start from scratch. Standards organizations like the Smart
Card Alliance consist of many participants seeking to leverage their
involvement. These are just a few examples.

Strategic alliances go beyond simple outsourcing or
subcontracting. They involve a commitment of time, money, and
resources to ensure success. They also require expertise to avoid
pitfalls.

BayPay has assembled a panel of alliance experts from Bryan Cave LLP,
CyberSource, Obopay, PropertyBridge (Moneygram division), and
Visa. Their experience ranges from technology-sharing agreements to
marketing alliances, joint ventures, and even mergers and
acquisitions, often in a global context. One of our panelists is an
attorney who will share insights with respect to protecting
intellectual property in strategic alliances.

If you are interested, please join us on August 5th. It is by
invitation only and free. If you have received this email, you are
invited. Please forward only to people involved in the payment
industry.

Background on BayPay If you are a member of the payment industry, you
are invited to join BayPay, a networking group of the Silicon Valley
focused on payments and composed exclusively of members in the
payment community or investors in this area. If you are not yet a
member and would like to join, reply to this email to get your free
membership with a quick description on how you fit in the payment
industry. Even after all these years, the payments industry is still
expanding in both mature and emerging markets worldwide as the
industry adapts to new market opportunities. New technologies
including contactless cards, cell phone integration, biometrics, RFID
and strong authentication are emerging and potentially creating new
challenges for both financial institutions and their customers.
Prepaid cards, gift cards, new forms of payment like PayPal, are all
vivid demonstrations of the vibrancy of new thinking in the payments
industry. With wireless ubiquity now essentially a reality,
transaction aggregation and micro payments become a necessity. As the
financial industry and merchants provide more and more services
online, phishing emerges as a problem that requires more education
and communication with consumers.

Objective BayPay's primary goal is to provide a face-to-face
professional networking forum for the regular exchange of views on
these issues among active professionals within the payments industry
who are located in the San Francisco Bay Area. An online BayPay group
on Yahoo! provides opportunities for members to interact among
themselves between regular face-to-face meetings.

BayPay Is a joint initiative of Glenbrook, Edgar Dunn & Company and
Daniel Chatelain from QSecure, Inc. that is open to other companies
or individuals contributions.

Membership To ensure an appropriate level of professional
participation, membership in BayPay group is by invitation only.
BayPay members invite others to join based upon their own judgment as
to who could best contribute to the group. To subscribe please go
At a recent gathering of over 70 security professionals, the subject of cloud computing and the issues that it raises regarding the security of our networks was discussed. The forum interactively identified numerous issues that must be addressed within the enterprise to ensure that proprietary, personal and private information is protected when using cloud computing technology. The talk described different types of cloud computing solutions and how they allow information to leak from the enterprise. Other cloud computing issues covered were data ownership, legal liability, verification and validation, virtualization, and e-discovery implications.
Aug 21, 2008: SKMurphy: Getting More Customers at Plug and Play Real Estate

We will cover a variety of proven marketing techniques for growing your business: attendees will select two or three that fit their style and develop a plan to implement them in their business in the next 90 days. As a part of your workshop, you will leave with an one-page action plan and we will follow up to help you track your progress. These proven techniques are divided into a couple broad strategies:

* What other people say about you: referrals, indirect, or joint sales.
* What you say: speaking engagements, particularly in community of practice groups (professional groups, users groups) are ways of reaching customers.
* What you write: blogs, articles, newsletters are all proven methods for getting your message across and reaching your customers.
* Getting found when prospects are looking: advertising and making your site easily found on search engines are two ways to do this.

This workshop has consistently enjoyed very positive feedback and the last couple have sold out so register early.

About the Workshop Leader
Sean Murphy has taken an entrepreneurial approach to life since he could drive. He has served as an advisor to dozens of startups, helping them explore new options and bring their businesses to new levels. His firm, SKMurphy, Inc., focuses on early customers and early revenue for software startups, helping engineers to understand business development.

Prior to SKMurphy, Sean worked in a variety of areas including software engineering, engineering management, application engineering, business development, product marketing and customer support. He has worked for Cisco Systems, 3Com, AMD, MMC Networks, Escalade and VLSI Technology. Sean holds a BS in Mathematical Sciences and an MS in Engineering-Economic Systems from Stanford University.

Agenda:

* 8:15 AM Breakfast & Registration
* 8:30 AM Workshop begins
* 12:30 PM Lunch & De-brief

$95; after August 10 $125.

Aug 6, 2008: The Elevator Pitch Roundtable at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP

The VC Taskforce Elevator Pitch Roundtable is a great opportunity for entrepreneurs to network with investors and other CXOs, present their company and idea, and hear first-hand what it takes to raise early-stage capital in 2008. Each of our events has consistently drawn an excellent entrepreneur-to-investor ratio.

If you are an entrepreneur in a startup and currently seeking capital, come prepared with your best 60-second elevator pitch.

If you are an investor come and listen to entrepreneurs' pitches. You never know where you'll find your next deal. Find out how our panel of investors rate the entrepreneurs' pitches; which VCs pass and for what reasons; and, which entrepreneurs other VCs want to talk to ASAP. Please let us know if you would like to participate on one of our Elevator Pitch Roundtable panels or Workshop panels.

During the evening, a select number of entrepreneurs will present their pitch to the entire room. Our distinguished panel of early stage investors will ask questions and provide brief feedback. Please note that pitching time limits will be strictly enforced!

Our lively panel discussion and Q&A will also provide critical insight into what it takes to raise capital today.
