Nov 20, 2009: Festive Works by Masters of the Baroque at Campbell United Methodist Church

Bay Choral Guild opens its 31st season with a delightful concert of Baroque Masterworks. BCG sang Handel's Dixit Dominus in its first season, 1988-89. Thirty-one years later, the group reprises this lively piece, a favorite with choirs and audiences worldwide. Next on the program, in celebration of the feast day (November 22) of the patron saint of music, is the renowned but too seldom performed Messa di Santa Cecilia of Alessandro Scarlatti. The concert finishes with the luminous Beatus vir, a superb and dramatic setting of Psalm 112 by Claudio Monteverdi. Sanford Dole, BCG Artistic Director, directs the BCG chorus, the Jubilate Orchestra, David Wilson concertmaster, and three outstanding soloists - soprano Ann Moss, and mezzos Elspeth Franks, and Sonia Gariaeff. All three highly regarded singers enjoy active careers both locally and nationwide in chamber music, opera, oratorio and recital performance. Join Maestro Dole and the Bay Choral Guild for a joyful and festive concert!

Nov 21, 2009: Froxfield Choir Sing Rutter’s Requiem at St Mary's Church

John Rutter’s Requiem, written in 1985 is not a setting of the Catholic mass liturgy, but a selection of texts associated with the theme - some from the Requiem Mass, others from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer. Over all, the seven movements meditate upon life and death in an arch like form, beginning and ending lyrically. The work exists in two forms, one with full orchestral accompaniment, the second for organ and six instruments, which is the version we will perform.

In 1876 Edvard Greig wrote the incidental music for Henrik Ibsen’s play ‘Peer Gynt’ and many of the pieces became very popular as piano concertos and orchestral suites. The words are by Ibsen and are sung in Norwegian.

Partsongs are harmonised melodies written for a full choir during the nineteenth century. The programme comprises songs by Edward Elgar, Arthur Sullivan and Charles Wood.

The conductor is Richard A. Smith and the Organist is David Groves.

Tickets £10 (to include a glass of wine or juice)
available from the Church, on the door, from
