Aside from being a tremendous vocalist, Curtis is one of the finest blues harmonica players in the country. In 1979, when John Belushi was in Eugene, Oregon filming Animal House, he caught Curtis' act and liked what he heard and saw. Curtis took the actor under his wing and schooled him on blues and R&B history, which Belushi soaked up like a sponge, and used a good portion of Curtis' show as the basis for the Blues Brothers act he and Dan Akroyd put together. Cab Calloway's character in The Blues Brothers film is named after Curtis. The first Blues Brothers' album "Briefcase Full of Blues" is dedicated to Curtis.

In the 1990's, Curtis did a stint as lead vocalist with Santana. From 1984-1986 Curtis Selgado fronted Boston's Grammy-Winning Roomful Of Blues before returning to Portland where he formed The Stilettos, who toured nationally with such acts as Steve Miller and The Doobie Brothers. Curtis will be performing with his band.

the Arts in the Mountains Summer Concerts July 31 and August 1, 2009

Loretto, PA July 1, 2009-- As part of the "Arts in the Mountains Summer Music and Arts Festival", Saint Francis University and multi-platinum recording artist Jim Donovan will be hosting two nights of world-class concerts at the JFK Auditorium at Saint Francis University in Loretto, PA July 31 and August 1, 2009.

The event begins on Friday evening July 31 at 7 PM with the Universe of Song Showcase featuring several of the East Coast's finest singer-song writers. Headlining the evening will be the highly acclaimed band "Berkobin and Corson" from Central Pennsylvania.

On Saturday evening Aug 1 at 7 PM the event continues with the Night of 1000 Drums Concert featuring drumming from Africa and beyond. Headlining the evening will be "Drum the Ecstatic International" featuring former Rusted Root drummer Jim Donovan and Congolese musician Elie Kihonia.

Both concerts are all ages and family friendly. The concerts are free and donations will be accepted at the door to benefit the Rockhouse Foundation, an organization dedicated to purchasing musical instruments for needy and at-risk youth.

Seating is first come first serve.

Former Motown recording artist Rick Whitfield is the leader of the 4-9 piece Rick Whitfield Band. ODC's contemporary and experimental music series, sfSoundSeries presents Milton Babbitt's "All Set" (1957) for jazz ensemble, and a number of bay area premiere's: Olga Neuwirth's "Fondamenta" (1998) for bass clarinet, bari saxophone, and cello, Alvin Lucier's "Q" (1996) for ensemble and sine waves, and Hans Thomalla's "Lied" (2008) for tenor saxophone, vibraphone, and piano. The program also includes two new works written for sfSound by ma++ ingalls and sfSoundGroup.

ODC's contemporary and experimental music series, sfSoundSeries presents Karlheinz Stockhausen's "KREUZSPIEL" (1951) for oboe, bass clarinet, piano, 3 percussionists, Anthony Braxton's "Composition No. 75" (1975) for 3 wind instruments, and the bay area premiere of Beat Furrer's "Aer" (1991) for clarinet, cello, and piano. The program also includes the premiere of new compositions written for sfSound by David Bithell, Christopher Burns, Christopher Jones and sfSoundGroup.

The concert features excerpts from Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Patience” and Chinese opera “Legend of the White Snake” (Sung in Chinese with English translations) by Taiwan composer Hsu Chang Wei. “Patience” is a light hearted operetta, a satire of the Aesthetic Movement in the late 19th Century Britain. “Legend of the White Snake” is a musical adaptation of the well-known Chinese myth, in which the white snake turned herself into a human for her love, and eventually sacrifices herself for her family.

The concert will also feature other choral works including the seldom-performed suite of Serenades by Mozart, “The Snow” of Elgar and “The Art of Ground Round” by P.D.Q. Bach.

About Conductor and Music Director, Stephanie Chan:
Stephanie Chan earned her Bachelor of Music Degree summa cum laude from San Francisco State University in 1982. During Stephanie’s tenure as Music Director (1983-1993), the choir of St. Paul's Co-educational College was chosen as the Best School Choir in Hong Kong for ten consecutive years. It also won the Gold Award in the Third International Music Festival held in Australia. Prior to her return to the Bay Area in 1996, Stephanie was a Lecturer in Voice at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the Head of Musicianship Department of the Junior School at the Hong Kong Academy for the Performing Arts. As a singer, Stephanie has given solo recitals and has performed in opera productions both in California and in S.E. Asia. She is particularly noted for her interpretation of Mozartian roles and German Lieder. An experienced music teacher in voice and piano, Stephanie is now teaching in Milpitas.
