Couperin's luscious quartet "La Sultane" and Corette's rambunctious "Le Phenix" (for 4 bass viols) are the cornerstones of a rare musical treat. Other composers include Marais, Forqueray (pieces for 3 bass viols), and Ste. Colombe. Hallifax & Jeffrey are well known to Bay Area audiences, especially for their interpretations of Forqueray and Marais. Here, they are joined by two young rising stars, Marie Dalby and Josh Lee, whose viol playing has already won nationwide acclaim. Theorbist John Lenti provides his usual stunning continuo support.

The concert is in the fabulous wooden acoustic of the Parish Hall of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Berkeley. This will provide a superb setting for an unforgettable sound.

Known for his versatility, the 39-year-old has performed not only such classic roles as the main characters in "Billy Budd" and "Il Barbiere di Siviglia," but also created the role of Alec Harvey in Andre Previn's "Brief Encounter" at Houston Grand Opera and will create the role of Paul in the world premiere of Daron Hagen's "Amelia" at Seattle Opera later this season. Gunn recently ventured outside the standard opera repertoire to appear in semi-staged performances of "Camelot" with the New York Philharmonic (broadcast live on PBS's Great Performances) and "Showboat" at Carnegie Hall.

It was just announced that Gunn's acclaimed recording of a signature role - "Britten: Billy Budd," a Virgin Classics release recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra, Daniel Harding conductor - is among the nominees for a 2010 Grammy Award for "Best Opera Recording."

The baritone has also had impact in the popular culture, appearing on TV's "The Colbert Report" and being included in People Magazine's "Sexiest Men Alive" (2008).

The Herbst recital reflects Gunn's most serious performance persona. "Die schone Mullerin" is a classic of the German lieder repertoire. In the late 19th century, young Berlin intellectuals invented a parlor game that was at once serious and ironic, based on the old mill-romance. They wrote and recited poems on the subject and acted out the parts. One of them, the aptly named Wilhelm Muller ("miller" in German), collected 23 of his mill-romance poems and published them as "Die schone Mullerin" (usually translated as "The Fair Maid of the Mill") in 1821. Just two years later, in 1823, Schubert set them to music.

Gunn and his wife both teach at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where they live with their five children.

The Valley Concert Chorale, the Tri-Valley's premier chorus, will hold auditions by appointment on Monday, January 11 and 18, at the First Presbyterian Church of Livermore. The church is located at the corner of 4th and L Streets.

Pianist Sarah Cahill presents "A Sweeter Music," a peace-themed benefit concert for American Friends Service Committee featuring works she commissioned by living composers, including Terry Riley, Pauline Oliveros, Meredith Monk, Jerome Kitzke, Michael Byron, Kyle Gann, Mamoru Fujieda, and Larry Polansky. Her title comes from Martin Luther King Jr.'s Nobel Peace Prize speech: "We must see that peace represents a sweeter music, a cosmic melody, far superior to the discords of war." They sing songs about life's challenges and triumphs, and of the simple pleasures the world has to offer.

Based in the SF Bay Area, the Palm Wine Boys have spent the last two years playing around California, including appearing at the Strawberry Festival, the Wild Iris Festival in Sonoma, the California World Fest in Grass Valley, and numerous radio appearances including West Coast Live.

The group is an offshoot of an 8 piece world beat dance band that played around northern California for five years. They eventually realized that at the heart of the massive sound they were creating were simple songs that were being swallowed up by the desire to make people dance. "We wanted to let the audience hear the songs." So the group disbanded and the key players formed the Palm Wine Boys, bringing with them the sensibilities of highlife, soukous, and township jive, to a more mellow format.

Michele-Bridget Ragsdale holds a Masters of Music in Vocal Performance and is currently studying with Sheri Greenawald, San Francisco Opera Director. In the summer of 2008 she performed in England, Italy and Austria and has performed locally with Lyric Theatre and Opera San Jose.

Brian Smith Walters holds degrees from the University of the Pacific and the Royal Northern College of Music. He is currently a student of tenor David Maxwell Anderson and has performed worldwide. Brian has recently appeared on British, German, Swiss and African television and radio.

Sure to delight L.A.'s discerning jazz fans, vocalist Sony Holland brings her sanguine sound to the Culver's Club for two shows on Friday, January 29th. Described by the San Francisco Chronicle as "a decidedly modern jazz diva" Ms. Holland has won-over audiences everywhere with her smooth voice and with the infectious joy she takes in singing. She will be backed by a superb combo led by pianist Theo Saunders.

Born in a tiny town north of Minneapolis, Sony has toured Asia, performed in prestigious jazz festivals and in premier nightclubs such as the Blue Note, Yoshi's, Catalina's, the Dakota, the Rrazz Room and many more. Her melodic style allows for each word to be clearly heard. With a repertoire that includes classics from the Great American Songbook, originals and re-imagined contemporary songs, her concerts are known for their variety.

Though she is new to the Los Angeles area, Ms. Holland was brought to the attention of concert producer Merle Kreibich by the legendary jazz figure Dick LaPalm, who is known to have an ear for up and coming vocalists. After all, he has been a promoter for singers from Nat King Cole & Peggy Lee to Diana Krall and Roberta Gamborini. Ms. Kreibich has been portrayed by NPR as a one-woman army when it comes to promoting live jazz. With the dearth of good venues on the West Side, she has transformed a barroom in the Radisson into one of L.A.'s few true "listening rooms".
