Jul 29, 2008: LA Drupal User Group July meeting at Rich Media Institute

We meet on the last Tuesday of the month at the Rich Media Institute.

LA Drupal meets monthly and offers a nice place for members and new people to learn and talk about Drupal, a world popular content management system (CMS). RSVP is not required and attendance is free.

Topics:

Building R.E.M.'s concert tour site in Drupal

Learning Drupal? Want to see a completed Drupal site for the world-famous music group R.E.M.? You're in luck!

Our LA Drupal member Blake Lucchesi, from BoldSource, a local Drupal firm, will be showing us what makes this new web site tick. Come see the modules used, listen to the customization needed, and ask tons of questions.

Presentation technical level: Beginner (anyone)

See the R.E.M. tour site at http://tour.remhq.com

Developer Topic: Preventing SQL/XSS Code Injections in your PHP

Dave Keays, from RDK Software, will be showing the PHP crowd how they need to watch their code and make sure we don't let our guard down with accepting user input from things like forms. Drupal runs on PHP, so if you're interested in making modules or developing on top of Drupal then you'll want to learn all things related to PHP security and code injections is at the top of the list.

Presentation technical level: Intermediate-Advanced

Plus...

In addition to our presentation(s) of the night we have open-mic opportunities for those who have general Drupal questions or need help, time for those who are hiring or looking for consultants, upcoming Drupal training announcements, a message from our Drupalcon L.A. Proposal Group, updates about DrupalCamp LA 2008, and as always, the end of the meeting networking session with the fun and knowledgeable LA Drupal crowd.

Jul 23, 2008: Refresh Seattle: Lessons Learned Designing Onehub at Fremont Public Library

Please RSVP for this event as space is limited!

About the Talk:

Over time, every web professional develops their own set of opinions, methods and styles. Find out how designing a web service from the ground up challenged everything in my creative comfort zone.

We'll discuss web standards, semantics, frameworks, even job titles. How each of those can be either empowering or stifling. I'll share my lessons learned and reveal how they changed the way that I think and work as a designer.

In the process, I hope to inspire you to take risks and question conventional wisdom.

About the speaker:

Matthew Anderson is the Senior Web Designer for Onehub, a new web service on Rails that lets companies build secure, custom extranets in a matter of minutes. Matt is a standards focused web designer who is passionate about how design decisions translate to users. He is also a sucker for extremely polished, dead simple layouts that require few clicks.

Matt has designed in a variety of environments. Prior to Onehub, he worked for another Seattle startup named Likewise Software. Before that he worked as a freelancer, both directly with clients and through agencies. He has also spent time in the corporate world, climbing the ladders at GMAC-RFC and TCF National Bank. His experience has given him a unique outlook on the relationship between design and business, taught him the importance of details, and proven the value of always working with great people.

A Canadian citizen, Matt was born in Toronto and spent some time in southern California as well as the the Twin Cities prior to landing in the Pacific Northwest. When not designing, Matt spends time with his other loves including his fiancee, his piano and his Xbox 360.

After the Talk

Don't forget that we all head over to the Red Door for food and
drinks after every Refresh Seattle talk. Hope to see you there!

Aug 18, 2008: An Event Apart at The Palace Hotel

Not your father’s web design conference

In late 2005, two internationally recognized web authorities—web standards godfather Jeffrey Zeldman and world-renowned CSS expert Eric Meyer—got together to create the kind of web design conference they would want to attend.

Their new conference wouldn’t be just for designers. It wouldn’t be just for coders. Attendees would gain a deeper understanding of web standards, of course. But they would also encounter a world of emerging best practices and inspiring new ideas.

Guest speakers had to stand out as well. Subject matter expertise was not enough. Each speaker had to have made unique contributions to the industry. Each had to be a star.

They called their conference An Event Apart.
Your Hosts

As a world CSS authority, Eric Meyer has conducted complex standards-based makeovers and led intensive multi-day training sessions for such clients as Apple Computer, America On-Line, Yahoo!, Macromedia, Wells Fargo Bank, Cornell University, and others. No one has a deeper or more practical grasp of CSS.

Founder of A List Apart Magazine and Happy Cog™ Studios and co-founder of The Web Standards Project, L. Jeffrey Zeldman is an internationally known designer and writer. He has brought standards-based design to the web development community and to clients including Advertising Age, AIGA, and Amnesty International USA.
