Aug 8, 2008: Requiem at Lincoln Center - The Rose Theater

Lemi Ponifasio and his company, MAU, arrive at Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival Requiem, a “journey”, in his words, “of hope and desire for transformation”. This compelling modern dance, inspired by Mozart’s Requiem, brings “a starky modern sensibility to bear on Samoan themes of death and remembrance” (The Guardian (London)). Ponifasio blends music, art, ritual, incantation, and movement to create an atmospheric soundscape where the play of light and dark symbolizes the very nature of transition.

This performance will take place at 7:30PM on Friday August 8th and Saturday August 9th at Lincoln Center's Rose Theater in NY, NY. Tickets cost between $40 and $90 and include individual admission. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 212.721.6500 or visit, www.LincolnCenter.org/Mostly Mozart.

Sep 1, 2008: EXPLORE TEA - HORSE ROAD (Chengdu - Tiger Leaping Gorge - Lhasa) at Voyage Vietnam MOTOTOURS ASIA

DISCOVER THE TEA-HORSE ROAD ON MOTORCYCLE

Ride CHENGDU - LIJIANG - TIGER LEAPING GORGE - LHASA

CROSS BORDERS TOUR 2008 takes place from Sep 10th - 30th . This motorcycle adventure will discover the TEA-HORSE ROAD where “Few people have realized how vast and unprecedented this sudden expansion of caravan traffic between India and China was, or how important. It was a unique and spectacular phenomenon. No complete story has yet been written about it, but it will always live in my memory as one of the great adventures of mankind. Moreover, it demonstrated to the world very convincingly that, should all modern means of communication and transportation be destroyed by some atomic cataclysm, the humble horse, man’s oldest friend, is ever ready to forge again a link between scattered peoples and nations [Goullart 1955: 88].”

To day we EXPLORE THE TEA-HORSE ROAD on the “IRON-HORSE”. Riding a motorcycle is the best way to learn about this historical road. Wheeling from Chengdu the capital of Sichuan Province, (also the Southern Silk Road) will take you deeply to mountaineer’s custom and cultures. There are more than twenty different ethnic groups to be found along the route. Some famous old towns and villages which once were key stations and markets of the Tea and Horse Caravan Road have been listed among the most important international sites for historic preservation. For example, the Lijiang, where the Naxi people form the majority of inhabitants, was been designated as a world cultural heritage site by UNESCO in 1997. In 2002, Sidengjie village, Shaxi Township in Yunnan, was listed as a “protected world architectural heritage site” by the World Architecture Foundation. Moreover, the Tea and Horse Road continues to be a sacred road for many people. The different religions along the road include, for example, the white, yellow and red sects of Tibetan Buddhism; the Bon religion of pre-Buddhism in Tibet; the Dongba religion of the Naxi people which combines Bon, Buddhism and its own animism; Han Buddhism and Taoism, as well as the Hinayana belief of the Dai people, and the Benzhu (local gods and goddess) worship of the Bai people. Along the caravan road, there are many sacred mountains belonging to the different ethnic groups. For example, Kawagebo Snow Mountain [Meiliexuashan] (6740 m), near Yubeng in northern Yunnan, is one of the most famous sacred mountains of the Tibetan people. Every year many pilgrims from Sichuan, Yunnan, Tibet, Qinghai, and Gansu come there to worship and circumambulate the mountain with their tents, sheep and horses to ask for blessings from the mountain god. Pilgrims still travel annually to Lhasa to pay their respect to the deities of Buddhism, often still “measuring the road” by prostrating their bodies along its length. The road these pilgrims follow is the Tea and Horse Caravan Road. In the past, young monks often shared the road with the caravans when traveling to Lhasa to carry on their studies and to advance their careers.

Aug 29, 2008: Con-X-treme at San Mateo Marriott San Francisco Airport Hotel

Promoting the creation of animation and all things Media.

WHAT IS CON-X-TREME?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CON-X-TREME is volunteer-run event held this year over the extended Labor Day weekend at the San Mateo Marriott Hotel. The primary area of emphasis is focused on the creation of art and other media, traditional and non-traditional, without the limitation of holding true to a certain theme or topic.
While some may view this as simply it is another anime or science fiction convention event, the real opportunities this event brings forward is an opportunity for fans of all mediums to meet and network with both other fans and professionals alike. Whether it be physical art, virtual art, film & television, video games or music, CON-X-TREME attempts to have compelling, knowledgeable, and well-spoken Guests of Honor who are willing to spend time sharing their experiences within their respective industries, mentoring our attendees through discussion panels, classroom instruction, and other programming events.
Throughout each day of the weekend event, CON-X-TREME presents curriculum through a series of classroom programming where event members may participate in the discussion or hands-on study of particular subjects.
CON-X-TREME is not all classrooms, lectures, and study however, as we temper much of the proceeding with many other programming alternatives including, but not limited to, the following:
v A 24-hour anime programming room featuring professional and fan-created animation videos and programs;
v A room dedicated to premiering the latest in console and computer video games and technology;
v Dedicated space for costume gatherings and workshops which will culminate in a full costume contest event;
v Event space which promotes and displays artwork from many of the Bay Area’s most vibrant and popular artists;
All in all, CON-X-TREME aspires to provide opportunities for the truly creative side of fans and professionals to mix freely within an environment which inspires creativity and spontaneity.
