Oct 30, 2009: Playful 09 at Conway Hall

Playful is a one-day event all about play – in all its manifestations, throughout the contemporary media landscape. The event aims to promote lively debate on the nature of play and games: what they mean to different people – both inside and outside the industry. Focusing on the creative and cultural dimensions, Playful examines game design as both a discipline and craft, offering different perspectives on its current and future possibilities.

Following on from Sense of Play and the event last year, Playful 09 is moving further afield to bring in experts and exponents from the cultural ‘mainstream’ to explore how to make the games medium more meaningful, to more people. Attracting a wider audience is now very much in the minds of many developers and publishers, and the knowledge that 65% of people who could engage with interactive entertainment choose not to. Despite bold efforts in the past few years by insiders and outsiders, cultural deficiencies are still there – or at least perceived to be there. So what can those of us who design games really learn from other parts of the creative arts? Conversely what does game design have to offer other areas of entertainment and culture?

Playful looks to chart the way forward, and on its way will visit not just the conventional console and PC game, but the myriad of interactive and play-based entertainment experiences which are increasingly becoming part of online, film, television, theatre, installation and performance arts.

The event will look for the interesting and the valuable from a range of areas outside the traditional creative industries including built environment, architects, authors, scientists, as well as the core networked and creative sectors we work with.

Speakers from last year

Roo Reynolds, BBC
James Wallis, Spaaace
Russell Davies, Interesting
Adrian & Dan Hon, Six To Start

Mar 2, 2010: Emerging Communications (eComm) Spring 2010 at San Francisco Airport Marriott

Why eCommThe Emerging Communications Conference & Awards:

* Attracts executives and top influencer's from across the telecom, mobile and Internet space
* Launches real-world startups
* Explores business models and new partnership structures
* Gives stage time to cutting-edge academic projects
* Presents views from the incumbent telecom players
* Stirs required policy debates
* Promotes garage based hacks
* Brings out visionaries
* Provides a venue to meet and do business, as well as be inspired
* Showcases bleeding-edge technologies
* Provides a critical forum for all players across the full spectrum

Why Attend Fall 2009?

The mammoth sized telecom industry - including cellular - is in the process of being re-written. You either stand on the side to be written into the past or instead join with the growing community to write the future.

Opportunities to profit from the radical restructuring and in accelerating the development of how humanity connects, communicates and collaborates have never been so great.

Opportunity Doesn't Always Knock. Sometimes It Calls.

The Emerging Communications (eComm) Conference & Awards was created to promote and accelerate communications innovation.

Telecom, mobile and to a lesser extent, Internet based communications, had been innovation stagnant for far too long. Yet the opportunities for innovation had never been greater. Those opportunities are only going to grow as drastic changes further impact the multi-trillion dollar a year telecom industry. Changes include:

* Telecom is becoming software
* Today's model of the telephony and SMS cash-cows will significantly dry up long-term
* "Phones" are becoming general purpose always-on computers
* A march is underway to change how spectrum is allocated and utilised
* Applications innovation is being democratised
* The media industry is converging with personal communications
* Internet-style ecosystems are starting to pressurise the traditional value chain
* Search engines and computer manufactures are encroaching into the space
* App downloads; media content and even communication streams are increasingly routing-around operator's billing systems
* The telecom kingdom is fragmenting daily.

There is not a migratory way from where we are to the future; this means unprecedented opportunity for those ahead-of-the-curve.

The debut San Francisco Spring 2008 conference broke a lot of new ground and created a forum attracting 300 top influencer's and 80 speakers from 15 countries. San Francisco Spring 2009 built upon that foundation with world-class speakers and a 25% increase in attendees. Amsterdam Fall 2009 is the debut European event and promises to further cement the community.

Oct 28, 2009: Emerging Communications (eComm) Fall 2009 at Transformatorhuis, Westergasfabriek

Why eComm?

The Emerging Communications (eComm) Conference & Awards was created to promote and accelerate communications innovation.

Telecom, mobile and to a lesser extent, Internet based communications, had been innovation stagnant for far too long. Yet the opportunities for innovation had never been greater. Those opportunities are only going to grow as drastic changes further impact the multi-trillion dollar a year telecom industry. Changes include:

* Telecom is becoming software

Major topics of Fall 2009 (so far) will include:

* New communication paradigms more...less... i.e. Google Wave, Rebelvox
* Telecom restructuring, threats, & new business models i.e. "double-sided" business model, app stores: co-existence or survival of the fittest?
* The fusion of media, informational and conversational worlds
* Towards an edge-centric world networks & edge economics; it doesn't matter how smart the pipes get - the edge & the cloud will be smarter still
* Open communication platforms demos of applications which show the power of convergence of Web, Telco and mobile technologies
* Improving efficiency thru communications innovation particularly mobile enterprise applications and Communications-Enabled Business Processes (CEBP). What does Freephone 2.0 look like?
* Android Scripting Environment (ASE) and iPhone 3.0 OS applications
* Operator futures: bit-pipes, platforms or supermarkets?
* Industry predictions; picture of the next 5 or 10 years
* Democratisation of communications and communications innovation i.e. Iran post-election in the case of the former, Skype as an example of the latter
* Voice and messaging 2.0+
* Growth of handset apps and PC-based mobile broadband
* Real-time Web as conversational platform

The Emerging Communications Conference & Awards:

* Attracts executives and top influencer's from across the telecom, mobile and Internet space
* Launches real-world startups
* Explores business models and new partnership structures
* Gives stage time to cutting-edge academic projects
* Presents views from the incumbent telecom players
* Stirs required policy debates
* Promotes garage based hacks
* Brings out visionaries
* Provides a venue to meet and do business, as well as be inspired
* Showcases bleeding-edge technologies

Oct 6, 2009: Workshop: Christian Crumlish - Designing social interfaces at Sydney Masonic Centre

Designing social websites and applications or adding a social dimension to an existing project entails its own unique challenges way beyond those involved in creating experiences for individuals interacting alone with an interface. Any of the following sound familiar?

* I’m a designer being asked to add “social” to my site!
* I have an active community on my site but people are misbehaving. How can I get that under control?
* We want to build a really cool social experience around [thingy] but we’re not sure how to get people to come join the fun.
* I have a great idea for a social utility but I don’t want to have to first re-create the social infrastructure of the web inside of it.
* People come and read my content, but they’re invisible to each other. How can I peel away the layers so they can participate with each other?
* I’m worried I’m missing an opportunity to help my members connect with each other in the real world.

In this full-day workshop, we’ll address these challenges and more. You’ll explore the landscape of social user experience design patterns and anti-patterns, focusing on the contexts in which specific interface designs work well and the unintended consequences that make some UI ideas seem like a good idea until they turn around and bite you in your app.

Starting with a foundational set of high-level practices that underpin the individual interaction, Christian will present rules and tips for how to mix-and-match the individual social patterns and best practices to create compelling social experiences. Workshop activities will involve concept modeling and user interface sketching to explore the application of social interaction patterns to specific scenarios.

Who is this workshop for?
Designers, developers, architects and product specialists all need to work together to create compelling social experiences online and this workshop will be relevant to anyone who has to plan, design, build, or bring to market social websites and applications.

What will you learn?
By the end of this very full day you will be able to

* understand, visualize, and communicate clearly about the social design landscape
* apply a set of core social design principles to a wide variety of contexts
* create models for the representation of people and social objects in your app
* add social features intelligently (and incrementally) to an existing site
* design reputation features to enable the type of community (competitive? collaborative? somewhere in between?) you want
* enable sharing and engage organic word-of-mouth growth to launch your project
* embrace openness and leverage the existing open social infrastructure of the web
* introduce representations of presence into an experience so that your users can find and relate to each other
* tie your virtual experiences to the real world in space and time by connecting to maps, geolocation, and calendaring tools
* figure out an enterprise social media strategy for your client, boss, or startup

Oct 6, 2009: Workshop: Earle Castledine - Zero to hero with jQuery at Sydney Masonic Centre

Since late 2006, JQuery has emerged as one of the leading JavaScript frameworks for web developers, powering sites as diverse as DIGG and NBC, being included as part of development platforms like Microsoft’s ASP.NET Ajax Framework and Nokia’s Widget Development Platform, and spawning a large ecosystems of plugins.

In this day-long hands-on masterclass, JavaScript and jQuery guru Earle Castledine takes you from the basics of jQuery: simple and useful effects; through to advanced techniques like themeable widgets and Ajax-y goodness. Through fast-paced and interesting practical examples you’ll walk away with the confidence and skill to apply jQuery to your current projects and ideas.

Who is this workshop for?
The workshop is aimed at designers and developers who want to implement impressive client-side behaviour with less effort. It’s for anyone looking to bring their web pages to life and create an engaging user experience - without requiring a computer science degree. A basic knowledge of CSS and HTML is important, and some knowledge of JavaScript will give you a head-start.

What will you learn?
By the end of the day you will be able to

* make crazy (as well as simple, subtle, and elegant) effects
* understand when to use jQuery (and when not to)
* apply jQuery to your existing projects to add instant sparkle
* implement and customise popular page interactions
* create accessible and themeable components
* handle Ajax requests like a pro

About Earle Castledine
Sporting a Masters in Information Technology and a lifetime of experience on the Web of Hard Knocks, Earle Castledine (Mr Speaker) holds an interest in everything computery. A Senior Systems Analyst and Javascript flaneur - he is equally happy in the muddy pits of .NET code as in the fluffy fields of client-side interaction development. Co-creator of the client-side opus TurnTubelist and author of the upcoming book “jQuery: Novice to Ninja”, Earle recognises the Internet not as a lubricant for social change, but as a vehicle for unleashing frivolous ECMAScript gadgets and interesting time-wasting technologies.

Oct 6, 2009: Workshop: Ed Directions at Sydney Masonic Centre

Developing curricula and training for the next generation of web designers and developers often feels like shooting at a moving target. Best practices are constantly evolving, and difficult to keep track of, while standards seem to constantly emerge and be updated. Browsers upgrade at a seemingly furious pace. As a consequence, it’s a real challenge for education and training to prepare students for the needs of industry by equipping them with the proper foundational knowledge of current best practices and standards.

Ed Directions, a highly focussed, in-depth, whole day symposium, will address this challenge, by helping teachers, trainers, course and curriculum developers, and others in the education field keep abreast with the latest developments in standards and industry best practice, and to develop and deliver the best possible curricula and courses.

Who is this workshop for?
If you are involved in developing or delivering education for web designers and developers, whether in the secondary, post secondary, vocational or the commercial sector, this day is for you. As this is not a day for learning the technologies and techniques themselves, a general knowledge of technologies such as HTML, JavaScript and CSS, and subject areas such as Accessibility will be assumed. There will however be no requirement to put this knowledge into practical application on the day.

What will you cover?
The day will be divided into 4 sessions:

Session 1: HTML semantic markup and web content technologies
Session 2: Cascading style sheets and web presentation
Session 3: JavaScript and Ajax
Session 4: Accessibility and usability

with each session featuring:

* a renowned domain expert giving an overview of current best practice, standards, as well as commonly used and taught, but outmoded, technologies and techniques
* experts in the education sector, covering the resources available (commercial, free, and open) to develop curricula and training courses
* experienced teachers and trainers with a track record of success in developing and delivering training in this area, sharing their real world experience
* interactive sessions to put these all this knowledge into practice, and share experiences with professionals facing the same challenges as you

Oct 7, 2009: Workshop: Elliot Jay Stocks - From Photoshop to the browser at Sydney Masonic Centre

Ever wondered how top flight designers organize their workflow, from the original client brief, through to execution in code?

In this workshop, celebrated designer Elliot J. Stocks takes you behind the scenes of the design process, from the initial stages of briefing and research through to final comps delivered to the client for sign-off, ready to be marked-up. The final part of the workshop concentrates on the best ways to prepare your designs for markup and CSS: from sensibly organising your Photoshop layers through to cutting up images with CSS techniques in mind.

What will be covered?

* Research (the brief, inspiration, sketching)
* Structure (information architecture, wireframing)
* Interaction (navigation, forms, audio & video)
* Aesthetics (layout, colour, typography, imagery, atmosphere)
* Production (design comps, deliverables, style guides, CSS)

Who is this workshop for?
The fact that the workshop focuses primarily on Photoshop-based design might suggest it will be suited to designers who do not code, but a knowledge of HTML / CSS will help considerably. Likewise, front-end developers will find the workshop to be a valuable insight into the design process, and novice Photoshop users will be able to expand their skillset based on the techniques discussed.

About Elliot Jay Stocks
Elliot Jay Stocks is an independent designer whose work is frequently featured in online and offline publications, showcased on various ‘inspiration’ websites, and used as an example to design students around the world of how accessible web design can still look beautiful. A regular face at design conferences around the globe and author of the best-selling book Sexy Web Design (SitePoint, 2009), Elliot can often be found writing about design trends, issues, and techniques for industry-leading publications such as .Net (aka Practical Web Design), Computer Arts, and Computer Arts Projects. His extensive portfolio includes work for clients such as The Virgin Group, WordPress.org, The Beatles, Blue Flavor, Twiistup, EMI Records, and Carsonified.

Sep 14, 2009: 2009 IDEA Conference at MaRS Discovery District

Social and Experience Design:
Inspired Ideas, Practical Outcomes

With every passing week, the ubiquity of access to information is shaping our world in ways we can see: shifting population centers, new ways of creating and using public/private spaces. These tangible experiences are also transposed through the lens of design to affect the invisible spaces of social discourse, cultural framework and personal communication.

IDEA brings together leading design thinkers from across the globe, and challenges them: to share beyond the concepts that inspire them most, and deliver practical guidance for attendees to begin making an immediate difference in the networked world of today and tomorrow.

Starting with a full-day workshop led by EightShapes, and continuing over two days of illuminating presentations, IDEA 2009 will immerse attendees in both big ideas and accessible insights.

Jul 16, 2009: Using Virtual Reality for Stakeholder Engmt for Env Mgmt at Online, in Second Life

Thursday, July 16, 2009, 11am-5pm Eastern

Presented by PublicDecisions, Co-sponsored by Learning Times, NY University Law School/Institute for Information Law and Policy, Public Agenda, Involve and National Issues Forum Institute

Don't Just Tell Them, Show Them
Why just talk with stakeholders about environmental management (or any other subject)? Let them experience it!

Conducted entirely in the virtual world Second Life, this one-day conference will provide you with the opportunity to experience and learn about the possibilities of hosting stakeholder learning events using virtual reality.

You'll participate in presentations (including a virtual deliberation held in Second Life), discussions . . . even "field trips" that demonstrate how virtual reality is being used for stakeholder learning today.

Field trips include
1) Tufts University (3D planning for Acton, Massachusetts that actually can be manipulated "in world" by participants in Second Life);
2) Centre for Water Studies (uses Second Life to showcase six water habitats that participants can interact with in world);
3) EcoCommons (provides an in-world network for environmentally-focused nonprofits, such as the Sierra Club and the Mountain Lion Foundation, for promoting awareness, community-building and environmental education) and
4) Virtual Native Lands (an island that uses Second Life for engaging people around the world in discussions about environmental issues affecting tribal nations around the world)

What You'll Learn:
► The benefits and drawbacks of working with stakeholders in Second Life, including when it's appropriate, efficient and effective—and when it's not
► How Second Life differs from other technologies used for stakeholder engagement
► How Second Life can be used for a range of subject areas, including—but not limited to—environmental management
► Tips for using Second Life effectively, including how to access existing "islands" or spaces within Second Life's virtual world and how to create your own space

View the conference agenda at http://www.publicdecisions.com/mini_conferences_3.html

No Experience Needed
You don't need prior experience with Second Life to attend, but you will need to create a Second Life account (it's free) in order to participate.

An orientation for registrants new to Second Life (and those who want a refresher) will be provided prior to the conference.
