Mobile Website Usability
Brands on the web live and die by the quality of the user experience. As the web expands from the laptop to the handheld, the rules change and the game gets harder. To develop a meaningful and intuitive brand experience on the mobile web, designers, technologists, and business owners must consider new constraints on user interactions, and account for them in innovative ways.

As the mobile web matures, we see more and more people with their mobile devices in hand, searching for hotel rooms, reading the news, or just playing video games. People are more connected with their mobile phone today than any other electronic device they use.

But how do you connect with users through mobile web sites and create exceptional experiences that are both functional and captivating?

During 2007, Molecular conducted a unique research project which sought to explore, analyze, and understand how users are interacting with the mobile web. More specifically, this exercise looked to understand what users expect from their applications, identify common usability mistakes, and recognize emerging design patterns in the mobile Internet. This presentation will share some of Molecular's findings, and discuss the impact for companies seeking to promote their brand on the mobile web. Usability expert Evan Gerber will provide insight on what these findings mean for the future of the mobile web and how you can apply it your business and improve you mobile marketing success.

The Professional Gallery of the Ontario College of Art & Design hosts a collection of design solutions addressing the basic needs of poor and marginalized populations not traditionally serviced by professional designers.

The exhibition, organized by the New York-based Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum and curated by Cynthia E. Smith, explores a growing movement among designers to design low-cost solutions for the “other 90%” — that is, the 5.8 billion people (out of the world’s total population of 6.5 billion people) who have little or no access to most of the products and services many of us take for granted. Design for the Other 90% looks at how individuals and organizations are finding unique ways to address the basic challenges of survival and progress — for example, nearly half of the other 90% do not have regular access to food, clean water, or shelter.

“Unconventionally, this exhibition highlights products that are economically self-sustaining, yet affordable to people living on a dollar a day — inexpensive irrigation systems for farming, for instance,” says Charles Reeve, Curator of the Professional Gallery. “The new forms of ingenuity here focus on pressing issues like poverty relief and environmental sustainability, both of which are key themes in what we teach and research here at OCAD.”

Launching as part of OCAD’s Scotiabank Nuit Blanche programming, Toronto is the only Canadian stop for the touring exhibition. An extensive website, including a blog, discussion forum and additional resources is available at http://other90.cooperhewitt.org/.

Creative thinking and innovation strategies for design, business and management students
Domus Academy (DA) is pleased to announce a unique semester study abroad design program that starts in
January 2009 exploring the reciprocity and the influences between enterprise and creativity and between managerial organization and innovation, showing that businesses can often generate more original forms of creativity and that creativity itself requires increasingly complex and articulated managerial and administration models.
This new semester program, based on the acclaimed Master of the same name uses the "Made in Italy" model (based on the production of beautiful and well-made objects) to complement the Anglo-Saxon one. The combination of project culture and entrepreneurial skill helps update the model of manager/designer co-direction as it focuses on communicating a particular vision.
The interdisciplinary nature of the DA program puts students in direct contact with the productive world of enterprise and
companies and inspires research project themes to explore and to design. Visits to Milan area industry workshops factories and showrooms,as well as the International Furniture Fair (Salone del Mobile) are also included.

HOW magazine is teaming with creative-industry consulting firm Marketing Mentor to present the first and only business conference for self-employed creative professionals, the Creative Freelancer Conference, August 27-29, 2008 at the Hyatt Regency Chicago.

The event is expected to draw several hundred solopreneurs from a variety of creative disciplines - graphic designers, copywriters, illustrators and photographers, as well as solo practitioners of interactive, interior and industrial design.

Since 1998, Vulpinari has been creative director of Visual Communication at FABRICA, which was founded in 1994 by Luciano Benetton and Oliviero Toscani. Here, he has directed projects for United Nations, International Council of Nurses, Amnesty International, Reporters Without Borders, United Colors of Benetton, CocaCola, Istituto Luce, Vespa, Porsche, The New Yorker Magazine and much more. Between August 18th and 29th we will run 7 simultaneous workshops in open software and hardware for designers and artists at our studio in Malmo, Sweden. Themes will be related to either physical computing or computer vision. There are both basic and advanced workshops that vary in length between 2 and 3 days.

The workshop fee will include all the materials (check each workshop description for details), documentation, and some food and beverages during the workshop hours. Each workshop is limited to 15 participants and may require some previous knowledge in programming or basic electronics. We will count with some relevant international teachers and lecturers during the workshops. You may consider participating in several of these workshops or just spend two full weeks with us in Malmo. BASIC ARDUINO

This basic workshop will introduce you to the basic use of Arduino. The goal is to provide you with open source tools, introduce you to the creation of your own personal prototyping laboratory. This will be a three days workshop taught by D. Cuartielles with support from the whole 1scale1 Studio joining for the different sessions.

PHYSICAL GAMING

This workshop is an introduction to the development of the controller part of video games design where we focus upon physical inputs and how we can create a game in relation to this input. This will be a three days workshop with D. Cuartielles, T. Olsson, D. Sjunnesson.

ALTERNATIVE DISPLAYS

The theme for this workshop is displays where we focus on the construction of displays out of alternative materials like electromagnets and thermosensitive ink. The purpose is to introduce the participants to a different way of thinking about materials and how they are normally used. This is a two days workshop by T. Olsson and D. Sjunnesson, assisted by D. Cuartielles.

DEEP CUTS

This advanced workshop will guide you into making your own Arduino compatible boards, program them, and manufacture them in small size series. You will be introduced to contemporary hardware design techniques what will allow you designing your own boards, shields for Arduino, etc. You will also get introduced to possible ways of making your homebrew board to be part of the Arduino IDE. This two days course will be taught by D. Cuartielles with assistance from the 1scale1 team.

BASIC PROCESSING

Processing is a programming language and integrated development environment for the computer arts and visual design communities.This workshop will work well as an introduction to the other processing-oriented workshops held by 1scale1. This two days workshop will be taught by F. LBarrajon and A. Goransson.

NO PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE IN PROGRAMMING NEEDED

LET'S DANCE IN PROCESSING

The aim for the workshop is also to give the participants knowledge on how to effectively use ReactiVision to produce interactive art pieces. We will be using Processing together with ReactiVision to explore new ways of producing art installations. This three days workshop will be taught by F. LBarrajon, A. Goransson and T. Olsson.

PROCESSING LIFEFORMS

Processing will be used as a way to create and prototype different ideas from an artistic perspective. Using Processing as programming language we are going to create three different types of artificial life forms that will co-exist on the screen. This three days workshop will be taught by F. LBarrajon, A. Goransson and will count with a special guest to be confirmed.
