Sep 8, 2009: Daniel Burka Workshop at RIBA

User Interface Strategies for Web Apps
with Daniel Burka of "Digg"

Web 2.0 is focused on user participation, so how can you promote interaction on your site?

As designers and product people, our focus is on developing wonderful user experiences where people can come together to participate in meaningful and useful ways. With social sites, this is doubly critical as our sites are fundamentally powered by users interacting with one another.

This workshop will focus on design strategies for lowering the barriers to participation, adapting to user behavior, promoting positive behaviors, managing scale, and creating intuitive user experiences.

Oct 23, 2009: Paul Boag Workshop at RIBA

How to Win Pitches, Charm Clients and Get Signoff
with Paul Boag of "Headscape" & "boagworld.com"

Being a great designer or developer is only half the battle. You also need to be able to promote and sell your services, unfortunately there is little advice online about how to do this effectively.
The first part of this workshop will examine ways to promote your services, discuss effective approaches when responding to client briefs and improve your presentational skills for that crucial pitch.

Oct 8, 2009: Andy Hunt's Pragmatic Thinking & Learning: Refactor your Wetware at Skills Matter Limited

Software development happens in your head - not in an editor, IDE, or design tool. We're well educated on how to work with software and hardware, but what about wetware, our brains? Join Andy Hunt for a look at how the brain really works (hint: it's a dual processor, shared bus design) and how to use the best tool for the job by learning to think differently about thinking. Andy looks at the importance of context and the role of expert intuition in software development.

Learn to take advantage of pole-bridging and integration thinking. Compare different laterally-specialized functions, including synthesis vs. analysis and sequential processing vs. pattern-matching. Discover the one simple habit that separates the geniuses from the "wanna-bees."

Andy helps you discover how to learn more deliberately by managing your knowledge portfolio. Explore practical learning techniques including mind maps, reading techniques, situational feedback, and how best to cope with the torrent of new information that assaults each of us.

Jul 27, 2009: HCSNet Hands-on Workshop on Building Mashups at Macquarie University

This is a practical workshop where you will learn how to build mashups.

Neil Wilkinson, technical director of Yahoo!7 and Yahoo!Xtra, and Pamela Fox, developer programs engineer for the Google Maps API, will give an insiders perspective of their mashup development tools.

Then you will have a chance to immediately put this knowledge to use building your own mashup on the spot.

The workshop is especially suited for university students, researchers and developers who want to apply this new technology in their projects. Familiarity with a programming language like Java or JavaScript is recommended.

See the workshop website for further information and registration.
