Jul 23, 2008: Productive Interactions I - Introduction Session at Seattle Public Library, Central Branch

Leadership doesn't happen just in the board room or the executive suite. The opportunity for leadership, (or the lack of it), happens in every conversation you have every day.
Would you like to have your entire team listening, communicating and working together toward the same vision?
Would you like everyone on your team to have the capacity to "step up" and lead when they need to?
Do you have the skills to create a team that comes up with solutions that benefit you and your organization?
Are you confident about approaching sensitive conversations, or dealing with upset team members?
We find these and so many similar issues, questions and concerns within organizations that we created Productive Interactions I. This experiential learning program is designed to substantially increase every team member's capacity to be an outstanding leader in every conversation they have.
Key concepts that develop these leadership capacities include:
12 Operating Principles(TM)

Setting a Powerful Foundation

The Leadership Choice Point(TM)

Generating a Productive Environment
Whether you are an individual who would like to hone and increase your leadership and communication skills, or you represent an organization and would like to have multiple people attend, this introduction session will help you determine if the complete program, (which launches in September), will benefit you.

Our clients report the skills they learn in this program are immediately applicable to both their personal and professional lives. We have conducted this program in-house with entire organizations from the janitors to the CEOs, and publicly, for open enrollment. In both instances, our customers have reported dramatic results in their ability to work with others and manage themselves.

Give us a call or check out our web site to find out more about the introduction sessions. Anyone attending will get $100 off tuition for the full program in the fall.

Free.

Sep 7, 2008: Reyner Banham Loves Los Angeles: South Los Angeles bus tour at Esotouric Bus Adventures

“I learned to drive in order to read Los Angeles in the original” -Reyner Banham, Architecture of Four Ecologies

This new Esotouric bus adventure begins downtown and works its way south through Vernon, Bell Gardens, Santa Fe Springs and Downey, and through the past two centuries, exploring some of L.A.'s seldom-seen gems. Turning the West Side-centric notion of an L.A. architecture tour on its head—just like Banham's book did for the historical monograph – the bus goes into areas not traditionally associated with the important, beautiful or significant, raising issues of preservation, adaptive reuse and the evolution of the city. The locations all speak to the power, mutability and reach of the Southern California Dream. Some of the tour stops are:

Pueblo del Rio (1942), the first African-American housing development in LA, is a fascinating public project designed by Paul Williams and Richard Neutra, among others. Its application of the International Style and mass-produced pre-fab methods to the needs of the growing Southern California population leaves room for considerable dialogue.

The Gage Mansion (1808). The oldest adobe structure in Los Angeles County, this fascinating home sits smack dab in the middle of a 65-year-old trailer park on the banks of the Rio Hondo River in Bell Gardens. Between the layers of context at this site is the history of migration and growth in the Southland, from Spanish land grants to the dust bowl to the vast waves of stucco suburbs.

The Bradbury Building (1893). A favorite of Banham's, this structure, the oldest surviving commercial building in the historic core, with its delicate ironwork and astonishing atrium, represents a feature of each Banham book: a structure that uses the builder's ingenuity and the uniqueness of its setting to make something utterly of its time and place.

The Downey Space Plant (1929-present). It began as airplane factory carved out of a castor bean field and grew to be the hub of North American Aerospace development, before being sold off in pieces in the early 2000s. Currently it's a motion picture sound stage. Is the only long-term solution for this awe-inspiring, 160-acre space a vertically-integrated condominium and retail development?

East Los Angeles Train Station (1932). A prominent location in the 1946 film "The Postman Always Rings Twice," it was built to deal with congestion and overcrowding in the existing downtown terminals. Currently a picturesque Mission-style ruin in the shadow of the wacky Citadel shopping center, will it rise again as the rail lines reassert themselves?

No other city has so fascinated architecture critics and scholars of urban and cultural studies than L.A., that sprawling, self-referential zone of mystery and glamour. British writer Reyner Banham was the first to love Los Angeles for what she was, her ugliness as well as her beauty. In the early 1970s he abandoned his academic preconceptions to revel in this city of freeways, foothills, beaches and suburbs, built on mobility and flux by a series of invaders. Along the way, he discovered extraordinary spaces in neighborhoods that were often overlooked for being too remote, too industrial, or simply occupying invisible "flyover country" beneath the great L.A. freeways.

In this city on the edge of the western dream, nothing was like what came before. Status was no longer communicated through the construction of stone palaces that looked like they fought every step of the journey over the Rocky Mountains, but rather by freeway access and wacky drive-thrus, light, ventilation, organic design and a sensitivity to a built environment— commercial and architectural innovations which would have been unthinkable anywhere and anytime else.

Gone was the unified vision of a city, and yet there was a method to L.A.'s madness. What Banham saw was something far more complicated: behind this urban sprawl was a pattern, almost a language, which could not be understood through old modes of architectural and urban criticism, but which had to be viewed through the organic facts of its own ecologies.

Esotouric guides Richard Schave, Nathan Marsak and Kim Cooper all studied under Banham as undergraduates at UCSC, and each was deeply influenced by his work. In Fall 2007, we launch "Reyner Banham Loves Los Angeles" in tribute to our late professor, who showed us our native Southern California through fresh eyes.

ABOUT REYNER BANHAM: Reyner Banham(1922-1988) was a prolific architectural critic best known for "Theory and Design in the First Machine Age" (1960) and "Los Angeles: The Architecture of Four Ecologies" (1971). Professor Banham taught at the University of London, SUNY Buffalo and the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he was Chair of the Art History Department.

Sep 20, 2008: Reyner Banham Loves Los Angeles: The Many Downtowns bus tour at Esotouric Bus Adventures

The second installment in our ongoing architecture series, "Reyner Banham Loves Los Angeles," is an ambitious and provocative bus tour which sets out to provide a good overview of downtown Los Angeles in the beginning of the 21st century, tracing the neighborhood's roots and long decline to its current boom.

Downtown LA was de-populated fifty years ago by a series of decisions at the highest level of local government and industry. Now, in a seemingly overnight rebirth (actually ten+ years in the making), new residents are filling formerly commercial structures, new businesses are arriving. Where the old and new downtown meet, a thin red line runs, mapping out the desire lines of these two opposing forces. Isolated communities are springing up in pockets, and applying their urban expectations to what they find there. The long balkanization of downtown is vanishing, from the top down (by forces like the CRA and Central City Association) and from the bottom up (block by block by pioneering city dwellers, business owners and urban explorers).

On this tour we'll look at how environment shaped the early waves of settlers and how they in turn shaped downtown in ways that still linger, such as Main Street hotels all facing East to greet arriving rail passengers. By visiting important buildings, and looking at how neighborhoods and intersections have evolved over the years, we will learn where downtown has succeeded, where in its broken places it can become strong.

The tour will feature exquisite architectural gems, including some seldom seen by the general public. But the tour will also offer a sophisticated analysis of downtown and the economic tools used to rebuild the neighborhood. The city's Adaptive Reuse ordinance, as administered by the CRA and interpreted by developers, will be explicated and patterns for evaluating the effectiveness and intimacy of these new spaces explored. We will also put faces on the development of downtown, highlighting the people who have worked for years to repopulate the urban core.

This tour has a significant walking component, down the stairs along Angels Flight, around Pershing Square, through several other pedestrain locations. It is broken up, but please be advised to be ready to stretch your legs.

Locations on the tour include:

Grand Central Market
Title Guarantee Building (including its landmark Hugo Ballin murals)
Angels Flight
Pershing Square (including its unheralded tribute to novelist John Fante)

This tour will include a coffee break (coffee and snacks on us) in Pershing Square about halfway through the tour. Bringing a sandwich or bag lunch along as well is recommended.

Jul 16, 2008: Lean Product Development: Dramatically Accelerating Development Processes at Yahoo!

Lean Product Development:
Dramatically Accelerating your Development Process

Meet Ron Mascitelli, President of Technology Perspectives and well-known author on Lean Design.

Despite an increasing need for speed and efficiency, much of the effort expended by product development teams is often unnecessary and potentially wasteful. In many cases, only one or two hours of a team member's work day is actually spent directly creating value for their customers. This presentation will describe how the waste-eliminating, "lean principles" of Toyota Motor Company and other leading-edge firms have yielded practical tools for slashing waste and increasing speed and efficiency for any product development process. Firms that have embraced lean product development have reported up to 50 percent reduction in launch schedules, dramatic improvements in gross margin, and enhanced customer satisfaction.

"Take-aways"
*	A method for prioritizing new product opportunities.
*	A tool for ensuring feasibility and minimizing risk for new products
*	A flexible method for ensuring efficient team communication.
*	A quick and simple technique for finding solutions to wasteful situations.

Ronald Mascitelli, is Founder/President of Technology Perspectives, a recognized leader project mgmt/product development emphasizing eliminating waste, maximizing team productivity, and enhancing profitability.
New events and activities help fill PGA tournament’s weeklong schedule

RENO, Nev. (June 18, 2008) – As the benchmark for professional sporting events in northern Nevada, the Legends at Sparks Marina Reno-Tahoe Open is preparing to celebrate its 10th anniversary in style. Welcoming a new tournament director, Michael Stearns, and adding new events and attractions to the weeklong tournament such as 18th Hole Après Golf entertainment, a “Taste of Reno” on Hole 17, the 16th Hole “Fiesta Loco,” the “Kidz Par-Tee Zone” and the “Get Fit Fore Charity” walk, July 28 – Aug. 3, 2008 is set to be a week for the record books. And that’s not all that’s new to northern Nevada’s only PGA TOUR event, featuring its first-ever title sponsor in RED Development’s The Legends at Sparks Marina, everything from the spectator entrance to the tournament’s food and entertainment offerings have been enhanced.

“This is a very pivotal time for the Legends Reno-Tahoe Open,” said Michael Stearns, Legends Reno-Tahoe Open tournament director. “With all the upgrades we have planned, and now, moving into our 10th year, we’re really well positioned to take a step up and start shooting for that unencumbered date on the PGA TOUR. We’re doing more than ever to attract and retain visitors to the tournament who aren’t necessarily golf fans, as well as to showcase the area and all that it has to offer guests when they come to visit the tournament. We already know that the players love coming here – now we just need to augment the spectator experience.”

New additions to the 2008 Legends Reno-Tahoe Open start on the16th hole with “Fiesta Loco,” a fiesta-themed hospitality area featuring margaritas, a taco bar and even a Mariachi Band. Move along to the 17th green to experience a “Taste of Reno,” serving appetizing offerings from local restaurants and upscale eateries, and introducing the tournament’s new signature kabob, the “Niblick,” named for wooden-shafted irons used in the early 20th century. Each evening, audiences are entertained on No. 18 with live “Après Golf” musical entertainment, and the “Kidz Par-Tee Zone” provides youngsters with a playful putting green, bounce houses, face painting and much more.

The Legends Reno-Tahoe Open also encourages fans to walk the course this year with two activities that provide great incentives. First, the tournament invites guests to “Get Fit for Charity” by participating in the first-ever, course-long pedometer walk. Proceeds from the sale of all “Get Fit for Charity” pedometers benefits local non-profit organizations, helping to achieve the Reno-Tahoe Open Foundation’s mission of giving back to the northern Nevada community. Second, tournament-goers can enjoy the PGA action while participating in the Vino 100 Wine Walk, returning for its third go-round along the fairways at Montrêux. Beginning each morning at 9 a.m. with mimosas on the putting green, walkers can sip samples from wineries around the world while strolling along the Sierra foothills and enjoying all that the Legends Reno-Tahoe has to offer.

“We really want to enhance the spectator experience this year,” said Rich Green, Legends Reno-Tahoe Open tournament manager. “By adding additional programming and activities for our guests we’re hoping to demonstrate to people that there is more than just golf at the Legends Reno-Tahoe Open. It’s something you can bring the whole family to because we offer a little something for everyone. “

All supplementary activities at the 2008 Legends at Sparks Marina Reno-Tahoe Open take place Thursday, July 31 – Sunday, Aug. 3. For more complete schedule information, visit www.LegendsRenoTahoeOpen.com.

Jul 23, 2008: Refresh Seattle: Lessons Learned Designing Onehub at Fremont Public Library

Please RSVP for this event as space is limited!

About the Talk:

Over time, every web professional develops their own set of opinions, methods and styles. Find out how designing a web service from the ground up challenged everything in my creative comfort zone.

We'll discuss web standards, semantics, frameworks, even job titles. How each of those can be either empowering or stifling. I'll share my lessons learned and reveal how they changed the way that I think and work as a designer.

In the process, I hope to inspire you to take risks and question conventional wisdom.

About the speaker:

Matthew Anderson is the Senior Web Designer for Onehub, a new web service on Rails that lets companies build secure, custom extranets in a matter of minutes. Matt is a standards focused web designer who is passionate about how design decisions translate to users. He is also a sucker for extremely polished, dead simple layouts that require few clicks.

Matt has designed in a variety of environments. Prior to Onehub, he worked for another Seattle startup named Likewise Software. Before that he worked as a freelancer, both directly with clients and through agencies. He has also spent time in the corporate world, climbing the ladders at GMAC-RFC and TCF National Bank. His experience has given him a unique outlook on the relationship between design and business, taught him the importance of details, and proven the value of always working with great people.

A Canadian citizen, Matt was born in Toronto and spent some time in southern California as well as the the Twin Cities prior to landing in the Pacific Northwest. When not designing, Matt spends time with his other loves including his fiancee, his piano and his Xbox 360.

After the Talk

Don't forget that we all head over to the Red Door for food and
drinks after every Refresh Seattle talk. Hope to see you there!

Aug 1, 2008: iPhoneDevCamp 2 at Adobe Systems

NOTE: The iPhoneDevCamp 2 registration page is now live. If you would like to attend, please use the registration form. Adding your name to this Upcoming page does not constitute event registration.

iPhoneDevCamp 2 is an upcoming gathering to develop applications for iPhone and iPod Touch using both the native SDK and web standards. This follows the first iPhoneDevCamp held at Adobe Systems in San Francisco, July 2007.

Attendees will include Cocoa Touch developers, web developers, UI designers, and testers, all working together over the weekend. Development projects will include both solo and team efforts. While some attendees will wish to work solo during the event, we encourage attendees to team up, based on expertise, to work in ad-hoc project development teams. All attendees should be prepared to work on a development project during the event.

Attendees will be able to:

* Create new applications for iPhone and iPod touch.

* Migrate Mac OS X applications to iPhone and iPod touch.

* Test and optimize applications for iPhone and iPod touch.

The event is being held in Summer 2008, around the time of the public launch of iPhone 2.0 OS and the iTunes App Store. Attendees are encouraged to attend Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference 2008, June 9-13, which includes an iPhone Track.

We are sensitive to the NDA that Apple has in place on the iPhone SDK. It is our hope that Apple will lift this NDA shortly after the public launch of the App Store. iPhoneDevCamp 2 will be held one month after the launch of the App Store. We have no intentions of violating the terms that individual developers have in place with Apple on the iPhone SDK.

The organizers of iPhone Dev Camp 2 include Raven Zachary, Dominic Sagolla, Christopher Allen, Chris Messina, Bart Decrem, whurley, and Blake Burris.

iPhoneDevCamp is not affiliated with Apple, Inc.

Apple, iPhone, and iPod are trademarks of Apple. Other company and product names may be trademarks of their respective owners.
