Oct 17, 2008: Clowns in My Coffee: New Works by Brian McDonald at Reaves Gallery

Reaves Gallery is pleased to announce Clowns in My Coffee, an exhibition of new paintings by San Francisco Artist Brian McDonald. Edgy, urban, and irreverent, McDonald's collection of new mixed media paintings will be on view at Reaves Gallery from October 10 through November 2, 2008. A gala opening reception will be held on Friday October 17, from 6 - 9pm. The exhibition and reception are both free and open to the public.

Inspired by cartoons, dream logic, and music, McDonald's paintings provide an explosive visual impact and explore a provocative range of subject matter. Layers of paint and collage are woven together into a musical montage of choice and chance, brought together by the artist's structural sense of composition and an eye for poetry in found materials. Through the use of disparate and often ambiguous imagery, McDonald employs the Duchampian idea of art being completed by the viewer allowing each individual to construct a narrative based on personal associations. McDonald's distinct visual style is underscored by a rather dry and dark humor that pokes fun at the absurdity of modern life while creating a vigorously tense connection with the viewer.

Seeing is believing.

Free and open to the public.

Oct 23, 2008: Icons of Presence: Asian American Activist Art at Chinese Culture Center

The public is invited to attend the opening of the Chinese Culture Center's new exhibition, Icons of Presence: Asian American Activist Art, organized by guest curator and scholar Margo Machida.

Icons of Presence highlights the substantial role of printmaking and graphics as a powerful means of social expression for Asian American visual culture. It showcases both graphic art and posters from the landmark decades of the 1970s and '80s, and more recent work by Jim Dong, Nancy Hom, and Leland Wong, who played a pivotal role in the San Francisco Bay area's Asian American arts movement. Putting the work of these three Chinese American artists in a wider context, the exhibition and its accompanying catalog also emphasize the range of influences that have shaped their art and cultural activism.

Icons of Presence is conceived as a counterpart to Asian/ American/ Modern Art: Shifting Currents, 1900-1970. This national historical survey exhibition of Asian American art, with significant West Coast representation, is on view at the de Young Museum in San Francisco from October 25, 2008 - January 18, 2009. Since the de Young show does not extend through the '70s or beyond - the period that witnessed the rise of the Asian American movement and cultural politics - Icons of Presence foregrounds the activist turn in Asian American visual art. By focusing on the work of these three individuals, Icons of Presence provides a slice of a larger history in American art that is both national and international in scope, to which these still-active Chinese American artists bring their own distinctive perspectives.

Icons of Presence is on view to the public from October 23, 2008 to January 3, 2009. Opening reception: Oct. 23, 2008 at 6:30 PM

Free.

Nov 13, 2008: Bay Area Glass Sculpture, Juried by George and Dorothy Saxe at Sculpturesite Gallery

The San Francisco Bay Area has emerged as a hotbed of serious glass sculpture in recent years, with work created using a large variety of techniques. The resulting pieces showcase the vast vocabulary available to artists working in glass. This important invitational features 23 artists from internationally celebrated masters, such as studio glass pioneer Marvin Lipofsky, to mid-career and emerging sculptors working in the Bay Area who use glass as their primary medium. George and Dorothy Saxe, who have assembled one of the country's foremost glass collections (bequeathed to the De Young Museum in San Francisco) will select from one to three works by each artist. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, November 13th from 5:30-7:30pm.

On view will be wall hung, suspended, free standing and pedestal sized sculptures made from various types of glass, including pate de verre, borosilicate, sheet, recycled glass and exemplifying many different techniques including casting, blowing (free and mold), fusing, slumping, cold-working, hot-working, etc... Some works will use glass combined with different materials.

We are honored to feature Marvin Lipofsky, who is widely recognized as a pioneer in the contemporary glass movement and as the father of Bay Area glass sculpture. After introducing glass as a sculpture medium at UC Berkeley in 1964, he created the glass department for then California College of Arts and Crafts (now CCA) in Oakland, and headed it for twenty years until 1987. In his 45 year career as a glass artist, Lipofsky has been featured in numerous significant exhibitions, including a major retrospective at the Oakland Museum in 2003.

There will be 23 glass artists participating, including Marvin Lipofsky, Clifford Rainey, John Lewis, David Ruth, Latchezar Boyadjiev, Randy Strong, Steven Maslach, Mary White, Bella Feldman, Pamina Traylor and more...

Free.
