exposures is a collaborative film festival organised by Cornerhouse, University of Salford and AbbottVision and is in its 16th year. It is the only regular UK-wide festival for student films and moving image and is a crucial showcase for new talent and they need new entries for the 2009 event.

The deadline for this year's entries is 31 July 2009.

Last year Shameless creator, Paul Abbott, of AbbottVision, became exposures' patron. Paul has been very involved in developing new ideas and in shaping the festival.

Russell T Davies, producer and writer of Doctor Who, and Danny Boyle, director of Slumdog Millionaire, as well as many other leading people in the film industry, have contributed to the festival over the years and continue to offer their support towards its aim to become the UK's premiere student film festival dedicated to nurturing, developing and promoting new talent.

Any students who have made a film whilst studying at a UK educational institution, can enter their film as long as it is under 30 minutes in length. There is no theme for the competition and it is open to animation, visual art films, documentaries, fiction & drama or any other type of film students wish to make.

You'll find Mandarin orange flavored pistachios and almonds; pulled pork and sausages; coffee, smoothies and adult beverages; a variety of sauces, syrups, jams, jellies and marmalade; infused olive oil; and chocolate dipped Mandarin oranges!

The quality and innovation of the Mountain Mandarin Festival has received state-wide recognition. Proceeds from the Festival fund three scholarships presented each year by the Newcastle Area Business Association. Crowds have grown from 1,500 in 1993 to 40,000 in 2008. Festival of Trees organizers and participants are excited to be returning to the downtown location. After one year at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club, Festival of Trees will again be centrally located on the historic McKinney square, and as part of the Dickens holiday festivities, will be enjoyed by Metroplex residents as well as tourists from around the country.

As the main fundraiser for Project Graduation, Festival of Trees has been instrumental in helping seniors celebrate their high school graduation safely and alcohol-free. Approximately 1100 seniors (of a total 1200) and 300 guests participated in the game-and music-filled Project Graduation last year -- a record turnout. Students took home $35,000 in cash prizes and over $85,000 in food, coupons, shirts and many other prizes, including the grand prize, a car donated by Nissan of McKinney.

Festival of Trees spans three days and features over-the-top holiday décor and exquisite gifts made by local citizens. Everyone is encouraged to participate; this is not a decorator-only or by-invitation-only event. Local businesses, churches, school organizations and individuals are encouraged to choose a theme for their entries and sign up early to decorate, donate items and attend the Preview Gala and Silent Auction.

Trees of all sizes, from 2 ft. to 9 ft. tall, lavish wreaths, creative holiday centerpieces, gingerbread houses sugary enough to tempt Hansel and Gretel, and many other types of gift items will be for sale during the Preview Gala and Silent Auction. All items will be on display over the weekend at MPAC at 111 North Tennessee.

Tree themes in the past have included an ‘I’ll Be Home for Christmas’ tree, honoring our military; ‘Grandma’s Kitchen’ featuring vintage cooking utensils; and a ‘Candy Tree’ with every imaginable sweet confection hanging from its boughs. Wreaths have burst with feathers, disco balls, Texas-size pine cones and vintage glitter glass ornaments.

Gingerbread made to mimic a rustic campsite, or elaborate gingerbread Victorian ‘painted ladies’, have tempted festival-goers of all ages. Dozens of smaller tabletop trees decorated in ballerina pink, animal prints, Minnie Mouse polka-dot, Tuscan wine connoisseur and even Popeye’s personal watercraft offer something for every home and decorating style.

New items at this year’s event include hand-painted holiday ornaments by well-known local artists and other one-of-a-kind gifts created especially for this event by area artisans.

Open House will be Friday, Nov. 27 from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 28 from 10 a.m. - 8 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 29 from noon - 4 p.m. at the McKinney Performing Arts Center. Open House tickets are $4 for adults and $2 for children under 10.

The Preview Gala and Silent Auction will be Friday, Nov. 27 at 7:00 p.m. Gala tickets are available to the public at $30 each or 2 for $50. Door prizes will be awarded during the Gala. All items are bid on and purchased at the Friday night Silent Auction during the Gala, and for the weekend, items remain on display for public oooh-ing and ahhh-ing.

This year's commissioned work, which will premiere on November 22, 7PM, at the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco, is the "International Youth Music Initiative", which started last year after receiving a generous grant from the Sam Mazza Foundation, and since has traveled across the globe to unite the youth of the world through music. This initiative brings together youth from all over the Bay Area, 12-18 years of age, combining a diverse range of our world's musical traditions and cultures, from the ragas of North India to the choral music of Eastern Europe. In addition to investing in the youth of the Bay Area, the initiative has also traveled to the mountains of Nepal, rural Taiwan, and the mountains of Kyrgyzstan to pass on to underprivileged youth their traditional music. Within the next couple years, students from these regions will join the group performing in the Bay Area.

This dialogue between 100 youth and 12 masters from 4 countries, having diverse global perspectives, is an effort to promote and preserve ethnic music here in the Bay Area, as well as, to provide youth from oppressed or endangered cultures of the world a voice to express themselves through their traditional music. It is an effort to challenge and inspire our next generation to learn about the global issues facing their peers in their own communities and of those around the world.

Berlin’s Apparat (aka Sascha Ring) has been a sonic force in the Decibel arsenal for going on six years. Since blowing the roof off of a sold out Chop Suey back in 2005 (2nd annual Decibel Festival) this lanky, mop-topped Krautrocker has been fueling dance floor mayhem in Seattle with unparalleled ferocity and technical skill.

A true renaissance man, Sascha is an accomplished sound engineer, composer, visual artist, guitarist, vocalist and business man (co-founder of the Shitkatapult label) whose profound love of music and technology shine through in every aspect of his impressive music catalog going back to 2001.

His exceptional talent as a producer and composer has rewarded him with consistent work as a remix artist, including remixes for Moby, Royksopp, Boys Noize, Johnny Cash, Nathan Fake, Paul Kalkbrenner and Seattle’s own Lusine.

In addition to producing three critically acclaimed solo albums, nine EPs and over a dozen remixes for some of the world’s most prestigious labels; this 30 year old wunderkind has co-produced albums with follow Berliner dance icons Ellen Allien and Modeselektor (Bpitch Control). His most recent collaboration with Modeselektor as "Moderat" has gone on to become one of the best reviewed electronic music albums of 2009 and sent the two acts on a hugely successful A/V tour where they performed at some of the worlds largest electronic music festivals (Electric Picnic, Sonar, Pukkelpop, MUTEK, Melt, etc).

After cutting his teeth by making music on various archaic computers and programs in his early years, Nosaj Thing is now, without a doubt, among L.A.'s finest musical modulators. His electronic soundscapes and wild beat tectonics play like vignettes that affect the listener's mind as deeply as he hits their soul. Nosaj Thing creates nothing less than the sound mastery of beat driven, experimental electronics from a gifted noise constructor.

His debut album Drift was released by Alpha Pup in June 2009 to unanimous global acclaim. Pitchfork awarded an excellent 7.9 rating, calling the album "gorgeously haunted... sonic Easter Eggs for a thousand listens." The album peaked at 5 on the iTunes Electronic chart, and went all the way to 1 on Bleep and Boomkat. The success of Drift led to Nosaj Thing being featured in magazines such as Spin, Fader, XLR8R, The New Yorker, Nylon and URB. He has received regular airplay on BBC Radio 1 and Los Angeles' KCRW, while his engaging live set has made him a staple of the worldwide underground touring circuit.

Nosaj's inspiring live sets before Glitch Mob and Daedelus earlier this year have made him one of the most in demand and highly regarded electronic music performers in Seattle.

:: LUSINE BIO ::
Jeff McIlwain has been producing his visceral, melodic strain of abstract electronic music as Lusine for 10 years now. Originally a Texas native, Jeff attended CalArts in 1998, studying 20th-century electronic music and sound design for music and film. Soon after, he met Shad Scott and put out his self-titled debut as Lusine for Isophlux. Since then, McIlwain relocated to Seattle and began steadily releasing his music on Ghostly International (home to 2004’s landmark Serial Hodgepodge as well as its successful followup remix album Podgelism), Hymen, and U-Cover. McIlwain has also contributed tracks to various compilations and remix releases on Mute, !K7, Kompakt, Asthmatic Kitty, and Shitkatapult. His Language Barrier full-length on Hymen Records was something of a departure, as McIlwain focused less on jagged rhythmic detail and more on the layers of ambience that lay beneath the percussion of his previous releases.

McIlwain has performed throughout the US and abroad, including a set at London’s esteemed Fabric nightclub, and an ambient multimedia performance at Seattle’s Triple Door in which he collaborated with video artist Scott Sunn. McIlwain has recently been involved in two film projects, co-scoring David Gordon Green’s 2008 film Snow Angels (with Kate Beckinsale and Sam Rockwell), and scoring Kevin Bray’s 2009 film Linewatch (with Cuba Gooding Jr. and Omari Hardwick).

McIlwain’s 2009 release, A Certain Distance, has gone on to become his best reviewed and best selling album to date. In addition, 2009 has brought Lusine several high profile festival performances, including DEMF, MUTEK, Sonar and the Decibel Festival.
