Nov 5, 2008: GeekUp Sheffield at The Forum Cafe/Bar

GeekUp Sheffield takes place on the first Wednesday of every month. It's a grass-roots knowledge sharing and networking social for folks involved or interested in all forms of technology and creative media.

This month
We've surrendered our usual venue this month for the Sheffield International Documentary Festival. Instead of huddles and talks, we'll be doing our own screening of a series of short geeky films and animations as a wind-down before the enormity of BarCamp Sheffield at the end of November.

If you have any short geeky films that you've made or think are worthy of the GeekUp Film Festival, then message me or add a comment below.

What is GeekUp?
GeekUp is a community of tech-minded folk from the North of England. Our socials take place once a month in Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Preston, Chester and Sheffield and are always a lively place to share ideas and spread a little knowledge.

Oct 28, 2008: Indie Games Arcade at Old Truman Brewery

A selection of the best and most interesting independent games will be on show this year at the Indie Arcade, part of the Eurogamer Expo. Organised by Pixel-Lab and Eurogamer as part of the London Games Festival, the Indie Arcade will be happening at the Old Truman Brewery, 28th and 29th of October.

Exclusive titles on show will include the upcoming PC version of Jonathan Blow’s Braid, Amanita Design’s upcoming adventure game Machinarium, and recently announced project Plain Sight, in development by London based studio Beatnik Games. The developers themselves will be on hand to play against people at the Expo, nearly a month before the game goes into public beta testing.

Other titles playable at the Arcade will include Introversion’s Multiwinia, 2D Boy’s World of Goo, FlashBang Studios’ Off Road Velociraptor Safari, and Mousechief’s Dangerous High School Girls in Trouble. Shift, War Twat and Psychosomnium (It's like You Have to Burn the Rope, but way better).

Rupert Loman, Managing Director of Eurogamer said: “We're delighted to have the Indie Arcade as part of the Eurogamer Expo. As anyone who has followed Eurogamer over the years will testify, we've always had a soft spot for independent games - and being able to help introduce these great games to thousands of gamers at the Expo is very exciting for us.”

David Hayward of Pixel-Lab said “Indie Games have long been overlooked in a landscape of boxed games with £50 price tags, but that’s changing now. Whether done commercially or not, indie development is an important strand of the culture of games, where smaller studios and auteurs can make significant contributions to innovation and the aesthetics of games. I’m really pleased to be working on the indie arcade this year, especially as it will feature the public debuts of several titles.”

Among this group of anticipated upcoming commercial indie games, there will also be a surprise selection of some of the most interesting and experimental freeware indie projects. Come down to see the best of Indie; entry is included in the ticket price for the Eurogamer Expo.

For further details see: http://expo.eurogamer.net/

The Indie Games Arcade is part of the London Games Fringe, a festival of alternative gaming events at the end of October 2008, organised by artists, academics, gamers, game developers, educators and creative professionals from a wide range of different media: www.londongamesfringe.com

Nov 12, 2008: Ask a Scientist [topic: surviving in space] at Axis Cafe & Gallery

THIS MONTH'S TOPIC: Surviving in Space

Long-range space travel brings a new set of challenges to the already formidable mission of sending humans out into space. Now that the U.S. is ramping up plans to send astronauts back to the moon and eventually on to Mars, NASA scientists must figure out how to supply crews with air, food, and water for stretches of months, and even years, at a time. The cost of shipping water into space, for example, will shut down a Tang party pretty quickly — every pound of water consumed in orbit costs around $10,000. To meet such challenges, researchers like Sherwin Gormly and his colleagues are coming up with inventive ways to recycle in an enclosed space habitat. Arguably the most intriguing example is a 10-pound machine that turns urine into drinking water using processes that duplicate those that occur in nature. Pee-licious! Come find out what Sherwin has to tell us about all aspects of exploration life support, and how such innovations could impact real-world conservation efforts here at home.

ABOUT THE SERIES: Ask a Scientist is an informative, entertaining, monthly lecture series, held at a San Francisco cafe. Each event features a speaker on a scientific topic, a short presentation, and the opportunity to ask all those burning questions that have been keeping you up at night. No tests, grades, or pressure…just food, drinks, socializing, and conversation about the universe’s most fascinating mysteries. http://www.askascientistSF.com

Dec 6, 2008: CyborgCamp 2008 at CubeSpace

[[Note: The date of this event has been changed to Dec. 6th]]

CyborgCamp is a simulcast unconference about the future of the relationship between humans and technology. We'll discuss topics such as social media, design, code, inventions, web 2.0, twitter, the future of communication, cyborg technology, anthropology, psychology, and philosophy.

CyborgCamp's aim is to have many communication channels such as Twitter, Flickr, UstreamTV, Video and Audio recordings and live chats displayed on the screen. In this way, the conference attendees can exist in three places at once -- Vancouver, Portland, and Cyberspace.

Half of the conference will be organized BarCamp style, and the other half will have structured experts on various topics.

Classrooms, individuals and businesses are encouraged to attend the event remotely. It will be livestreamed through multiple channels and will be archived and tagged for future viewing. Details on remote conference access will be available a week before the conference begins.

What is a cyborg? A cyborg (shorthand for “cybernetic organism”) is a symbiotic fusion of human and machine.
Nov 22, 2008: CyborgCamp 2008 at WorkSpace

This conference has been declared Portland-only for now. To RSVP for the Portland event, go here: http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/1098808

Join in our pre-conference discussion and help organize the event at http://www.cyborgcamp.org and faster updates on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/cyborgcamp.
