Oct 14, 2008: Winning PV Partnerships: A Bright Future for the US-German Model at Omni San Diego Hotel

Solar markets both in the U.S. and Germany are growing rapidly, but are still very dependent on government subsidies. Both countries offer a very different set of opportunities in leading the way into the future of the PV industry. The U.S. has huge, yet relatively untapped market potential; a wealth of companies developing promising new technologies and proximity to grid-parity in an ever growing number of regions. Germany is home to some of the largest and most sophisticated global PV companies and offers a large, growing and stable market with a reliable support system. Bringing those two together strategically has provided, and will continue to provide, an outstanding recipe for success.

Moderator:
Brian Fan, Senior Director of Research, Cleantech Group

Panelists:

* Lars Podlowski, CTO, Solon AG
* Mike Gering, CEO, Global Solar Energy
* Bernd Kohlstruck, Managing Director, Xantrex Technology GmbH
* Nolan Browne, Managing Director, Fraunhofer Center for Sustainable Energy Systems at MIT

Goal:
The goal of the event is to foster a fruitful discussion about the benefits of partnering among leaders of the PV industries in the U.S. and in Germany. Specific topics to be discussed will include:

* Unique advantages the different geographies offer
* Asymmetric needs of different partners
* Drivers and barriers for successful partnerships
* Real world case studies for managing transatlantic business relationships

Target audience:

* Key decision makers and multipliers from the U.S. and European PV industries
* Companies or investors with an interest in entering a transatlantic PV partnership
* Analysts, consultants and other service providers to the growing solar industry with an interest in learning about transatlantic partnerships

A full lunch and drinks will be served.

$20 Members, $30 Non-Members, $40 at the door.

Dec 3, 2008: Green Enterprise Unconference at Computer History Museum

The Green Enterprise Unconference is a gathering of professionals leading social responsibility, sustainability or environmental concerns and social entrepreneurship programs in their organizations.

Those involved with green initiatives in the Enterprise are faced with driving change within their organization, while simultaneously learning. The best source of information for green professionals is the perspective and experience of other green professionals.

The Green Enterprise Unconference is inspired by the "open space" conference format, which puts control of the event content in the hands of the attendees. (For a good description of an unconference event, see http://is.gd/21Nf). The Unconference format allows the best ideas of the group to come forward, facilitates extensive networking, and ensures thorough documentation of the proceedings.

The Green Enterprise Unconference is intended for those in their organizations responsible for green strategy and leading sustainability initiatives. We also expect related professionals, including other corporate representatives (such as from manufacturing, facilities, marketing, or IT); service-related companies relevant to this topic, VCs, the Press, and interested individuals from academia or the public. We expect several dozen sessions covering a broad range of topics relevant to enterprise green strategy, implementation, measurement, education, and practical experience regarding best practices.

The Computer History Museum in Mountain View is a unique venue with plenty of parking and WiFi. Lunch and snacks will be provided, and the Museum exhibits will be open to the group during the breaks.

The event is organized by Forum One Networks, a technology firm which sponsors unconferences of broad interest. For more event information, or information about sponsorship opportunities contact Bill Johnston. bjohnston@forumone.com - (p) 415.299.9638

Early bird discounted pricing of $145 available until 11/5/2008.

Oct 7, 2008: San Francisco Neighborhood Business Awards at MEZZANINE

Urban Solutions, an economic development nonprofit organization, and The Examiner are pleased to present the 2008 San Francisco Neighborhood Business Awards. The event recognizes top local, small businesses that have helped their communities. Past winners included Cole Hardware, Green Apple Books and the Balboa Theater. This year, Urban Solutions presents a new category for those neighborhood businesses with a commitment to environmental sustainability through a new Green Business Award. The event includes a reception with refreshments, live entertainment and a silent auction. The Presenter for this year's Awards is Phil Ting, Assessor-Recorder of the city of San Francisco. All winners will be announced on the day of the event.

The addition of a Green Business Award category for neighborhood businesses is new this year. Distinct from other honors bestowed upon businesses that focus on environmental sustainability, the SFNBA Green Business Award will be given to a local small business that fulfills the community-benefit criteria of the general neighborhood business award and is also pursuing green practices.

"With the ever-increasing awareness around climate change, Urban Solutions wanted to acknowledge a neighborhood business that's tackling the issue," explains Jenny McNulty, Executive Director of Urban Solutions. "When a small business, with few resources and a limited budget, dedicates itself to pursuing sustainability, that's what I call a true hero - to be applauded and thanked for their efforts," notes McNulty.

The San Francisco Neighborhood Business Awards, now in its fourth year, is also an opportunity for Urban Solutions to raise visibility about its programs supporting small businesses and microenterprises, as well as a fundraising event to support the nonprofit's many programs.

$50.00.

Apr 28, 2009: NAA Green Conference & Exposition at Phoenix Convention Center

Due to many factors including rising energy costs, potential global climate change, and general environmental awareness the “green movement” has arrived at a tipping point to where it has becoming impossible to watch television for more than fifteen minutes without viewing content that relates in some way to green. As a result future renters are more likely to seek out properties that are environmentally friendly. In addition to energy cost savings and the profits to be made by capturing green conscience renters, multitudes of governments at the local, state and federal levels have promulgated green regulations that affect the multifamily housing industry. Jurisdictions have enacted new green building codes, incentives, and regulations for the efficient use of energy in the operation of real estate.

Therefore, in light of the fact that the green movement has many divergent and potentially confusing aspects NAA will host a conference that assembles experts from all sections of the green building/management movement (green development (general green, mixed use, transit oriented, etc), green building criteria, green marketing, green property management, etc) under one roof so that attendees will come away with a complete understanding of how green will affect and potentially benefit their multifamily property.

Educational topics offered at the conference will include:

1. The National Green Building Standard and LEED- What They Mean to the Multifamily Housing Industry
2. Greening Multifamily Properties and Enhancing Your Net Operating Income
3. Green Regulations, Incentives and Mandates
4. The Costs and Benefits of Sustainable Design
5. The Multifamily Investor and Apartment Resident - Will They Care
6. Supplying Green Builders, Developers and Managers

In addition to the education sessions, the conference will feature a state of the art trade show for apartment industry suppliers to showcase their valuable green products and services.

Oct 13, 2008: Social Capital Markets Conference at Fort Mason Center

Join hundreds of other like-minded individuals and organizations focused on accelerating the flow of capital to good.

Big Change is Coming

Doing well and doing good is the mantra of a new generation of entrepreneurs and the organizations that invest in them. And Social Capital Markets 2008 (SoCap08) is a new event designed to bring together all of the people and organizations with a similar deep passion to change the world through sustainable businesses.

We're at the cusp of a massive sea-change in the ways that businesses can impact global and local problems. In the past, startup profit-motivated businesses were funded by risk capital, and socially-focused organizations were supported by philanthropy. The profit-oriented were rarely allowed to let a social mission intrude, and the socially-oriented were discouraged from building sustainable businesses. But a new breed of entrepreneurs - and a new mentality of those who fund them - is changing the landscape of business, investing and philanthropy.

At SoCap08, attendees will learn what works and what doesn't in this new world of social capital and social entrepreneurs, which hybrid social & business models reach sustainability and which don't, and where this emerging industry is headed. Attendees will be able to network with their peers, discovering a whole new realm of people they had hoped existed - organizations, groups, and individuals who share the same intention to launch and support sustainable businesses designed to impact global and local problems. Investors and entrepreneurs will find themselves helping to build a new community, gaining encouragement as they realize that they are not alone, but are part of something big, important - and rapidly growing.

At an ordinary event, the content on the panels and keynotes reflects the conversation in the halls. At a good event, the content on the panels and keynotes guides the conversation in the halls, helping it go further, focusing the passion of the participants on the key challenges and opportunities in front of them. At a great event, the conversation in the halls becomes the content on the panels and the main stage, the network connections become the narrative for the commons - and a new industry will begin to form. SoCap08 will be that kind of event.
This region has identified creative solutions facing all of us – climate change and dwindling resources, sustaining a healthy economy, addressing the needs of diverse cultures, and proactively financing infrastructure that supports livable communities.

Community activists, non-profit organizations, transit leaders, developers and city planners throughout the Bay Area have joined forces to develop creative, adaptable solutions for addressing the transportation and global warming crisis. The creative people in the Bay Area – from the Silicon Valley up through the San Francisco peninsula and Oakland in the East Bay to the vineyards in the North Bay – all have united to shape a meaningful future for our communities.

Come to San Francisco this fall to share your experiences, see first hand how a diverse region is collaborating to provide a green and livable future, and take home some innovative new strategies for your community.

Oct 17, 2008: Bioneers: Revolution from the Heart of Nature at Marin Civic Center

The Collective Heritage Institute, aka Bioneers, was founded in 1990, when Kenny Ausubel and Nina Simons assembled Bioneers for the first annual Bioneers conference, a gathering of scientific and social innovators who have demonstrated visionary and practical models for restoring the Earth and communities.

Bioneers was conceived to conduct programs in the conservation of biological and cultural diversity, traditional farming practices, and environmental restoration. Our vision of environment encompasses the natural landscape, cultivated landscape, biodiversity, cultural diversity, watersheds, community economics, and spirituality. Bioneers seeks to unite nature, culture and spirit in an Earth-honoring vision, and create economic models founded in social justice.

Restoration addresses the premise that "sustainability" is problematic in the context of an environment that is already depleted. As Paul Hawken has noted, sustainability is simply the midpoint between destruction and restoration. The goal of Bioneers is restoration, addressing the interdependent array of economics, jobs, ecologies, cultures, and communities.

Bioneers are biological pioneers who are working with nature to heal nature and ourselves. They have peered deep into the heart of living systems to devise strategies for restoration based on nature's own operating instructions. They come from many cultures and perspectives, and all walks of life.

Bioneers are scientists and artists, gardeners and economists, activists and public servants, architects and ecologists, farmers and journalists, priests and shamans, policymakers and citizens. They are everyday people committed to preserving and supporting the future of life on Earth. They herald a dawning Age of Restoration founded in natural principles of kinship, interdependence, cooperation, reciprocity, and community.

Uniting nature, culture, and spirit, Bioneers embody a change of heart - a spiritual connection with the living world that is grounded in social justice. Their pragmatic strategies effectively address many of our most pressing ecological and societal challenges.

Above all, Bioneers represent a culture of solutions. Their stories demonstrate that just as people have created the environmental and social problem we face, people can solve them - through a reciprocal partnership with nature. Over and over, they show how great a difference the actions of one individual can make.

Nov 14, 2008: Green Festival at San Francisco Concourse Exhibition Center

Green Festivals are a celebration of what’s working in our communities– for people, for businesses and for the environment.

A joint project of two national nonprofit organizations, Global Exchange and Co-op America, Green Festivals bring together local and national socially responsible businesses, and environmental, social justice and community organizations. Hundreds of thousands of concerned individuals over the years have attended these “parties with a purpose” aimed at forging a just, sustainable, inclusive economy – a green economy.

Green Festivals are a walk through a sustainable community. It starts with the personal: how people can make their lives work better. Individuals and business and community leaders also come together to discuss social and environmental issues of personal, local, national and global concern. Organizations and businesses showcase programs and products that serve the community. Neighbor-to-neighbor connections are formed, and skills are shared to empower people to create a livable community. Of course, it wouldn’t be a festival without music, art, culture and delicious food – all from local-based organizations and businesses.

For more information about the two sponsoring organizations, see www.globalexchange.org and www.coopamerica.org

Oct 19, 2008: North Berkeley Spice of Life Festival at North Shattuck Ave

In it's 6th year, the Festival will savor the "Spice of Life" with an exciting new Culinary Stage at the Elephant Pharmacy parking lot hosted by Kitchen on Fire’s Chef MikeC showcasing the East Bay's finest chefs. At the stage a range of cooking demos and cookbook signings by popular neighborhood chefs and restaurants will be featured, along with sales and sampling of gourmet food products. Throughout the Festival, gourmet food offerings from a range of North Berkeley restaurants and selected vendors will be available near bistro style outdoor seating areas and wine and beer gardens. This year we welcome Calistoga Water as a new major sponsor, and the event will be “green” with the use of compostable food plates, cups and utensils with the assistance of the City of Berkeley's Recycling Program.

Local musicians will provide live entertainment on two stages and in more intimate settings such as the Vine Street wine tasting area. North Shattuck area businesses will host author appearances and book signings, interactive art projects, and yoga and bodywork demonstrations. The event also includes 125 exhibitors displaying high quality arts & crafts along with fair trade imports, local non-profits and schools, and a variety of children’s activities. The North Berkeley All-Organic Farmers Market will be held as part of the event in its usual Thursday location on Shattuck near Rose St. with additional vendors.

A Raffle and Silent Auction of goods and services from local businesses will benefit the Edible Schoolyard Project, the Children's Community Center Preschool, and the Berkeley High Jazz Band, who will also perform at the event.
