Artemis Place - dedicated for decades, Artemis, (under a variety of banners), has delivered an integrated counseling and educational program that provides an unique alternative to traditional school for at-risk girls. Artemis Place provides a sanctuary where girls are able to work on completing their high school while learning critical life skills in conflict resolution, and in building self esteem and successful relationships. "For almost 40 years, our society has successfully transformed the lives of the most at-risk girls in our community. We know that every single girl is filled with power, and we are in the unique business of tapping into that potential," says Lisa Ellis, Artemis' Executive Director. As a graduate of the program, Lisa especially knows the immense good that Artemis Place does in the lives of young women and the Victoria community.

HepCBC ~ a non-profit society dedicated to Hepatitis C education and prevention for more than a decade. HepCBC strives to support those who are directly and indirectly affected by Hepatitis C. While there is treatment for those affected with HCV, there is no immunization available unlike its Hepatitis A and B counterparts. A person who contracts HCV often doesn't even know they have it until 20 years later when they start experiencing their first symptoms. This latent period of the illness often arises from the liver finally succumbing to the virus after having it for several years. HepCBC works to ensure that the public is aware of the existence and transmission methods of Hepatitis C and people know how and where to get tested - by a simple blood test that can be done at any medical lab with a doctor's referral.The organization is grateful to both individual donors as well as groups like the United Way for enabling it to exist and carry on with its mission.

There'll be a cavalcade of talent on-stage at St. Andrew's United Church for Tidings 2009. The commitment and dedication of those who nurture such talent shines through - and explains why Nanaimo is world-renowned for the calibre of it musical ambassadors. The Tidings line-up is especially indebted to Andrea Bertram, Vocalist and Teacher at Andrea Bertram Studio, and Rick Becker, Band Master at Woodlands Secondary School - along with all teachers and mentors in the community, at home, and school.

Lena Birtwistle open this Tidings concert with a distinctive set of folk/pop songs tinged with country hues. The singer/songwriter, for whom Ladysmith is home, has been sharing her music and quirky sense of humour all over the Island for the last four years. Citing such inspirations as Eva Cassidy, Fleetwood Mac, The Dixie Chicks, Steve Poltz, and Barenaked Ladies, her songs and stories are blended with a touch that’s very much her own. Alongside a focus on her solo career, Lena Birtwistle has recently teamed up with musician Sid Johnson, (Holly McNarland, Kinnie Starr), to form "The Adamantines". The duo, more rock/roots based, is working hard on songwriting, recording, and promoting the release of their debut EP, "Empires" (created with Zak Cohen at the Woodshop Recording Studio just north of Duncan).

It's that we're saying Espers are bad – far from it.  It's just that their weird blend of lo-fi pop, psychedelia and freak beat, highly reminiscent of bands your bearded middle-class uncle likes, (i.e. The Fairport Convention, Pentangle, and The Incredible String Band), is hardly the balls-to-the-wall thrash/hardcore the tour's name implies, is it?

In this classic cat-and-mouse chase through the surreal terrain of Northern New Mexico, a modern-day cowboy and his girlfriend must elude the predations of a deranged and manipulative hunting guide. Eric Ruby (Ramon Frank) had taken Danielle (Jenny Gabrielle) out for an intimate weekend in the Pecos Wilderness – the last thing he’d expected was to fight for his life.

Frank (3:10 to Yuma) and Gabrielle (The Astronaut Farmer) star as the young couple, while Chris Dempsey (Sunshine Cleaning) plays the predatory Brian Blake in Matt Holloway’s thrilling debut feature. Produced and beautifully photographed by award-winning filmmaker William Holloway (Steam Trains Still Running: A History in Miniature, Voyage to Arcturus), Pecos Falls highlights the intense alien beauty of the desert Southwest and explores the struggle for survival in the isolated wilderness.
