Jul 28, 2008: Mobile Portland -- iPhone App Store at AboutUs offices

July 11th marked the release of iPhone 3G and with it, Software Update 2.0, which includes Apple's launch of the App Store. The App Store allows for third party developers to create and distribute applications for iPhone and iPod touch using the iPhone SDK, a native development environment based on Cocoa for Mac OS X.

In his talk, Raven will provide a basic overview of the process of developing and distributing software for the iPhone and iPod touch, and share some key findings and metrics gathered in the two weeks since the launch of the App Store. What does the App Store mean for third party mobile developers?

Raven Zachary is the founder of iPhoneDevCamp, a not-for-profit gathering to develop applications for iPhone and iPod touch using both the native SDK and web standards, and is a technology industry analyst with The 451 Group, where he covers open source technology.

Raven's interest in Apple's mobile technology extends back to the Newton in the mid-1990s, and he was a former MacWEEK columnist covering Apple's launch of Mac OS X. He is regularly quoted by the media on issues relating to the iPhone and separately, open source.

Aug 19, 2008: Sydney August Web Standards Group meeting at Australian Museum

A HUGE Sydney web standards group meeting coming up on Tuesday 19 August. We have three great presentations and four great presenters!

----------------------------------
Presentation 1: "Findability: going beyond SEO"
----------------------------------
Presenter: Radica Raeves

Search engine optimisation is usually the first subject that comes to mind when thinking about ways to improve the visibility of your organisation online. But it's only a piece of the puzzle. In order to help the intended audience find, use and reuse your information, we need to look beyond SEO. Findability could help complete the puzzle. It's a much broader concept, touching on almost every aspect of the web design and development process, where specialist fields intersect and overlap. We need to try and identify these elements of findability and "plug" them into the user-centred design workflow. It's a big challenge... Can we connect the dots and bridge the gaps?"

----------------------------------
Presentation 2: "One Web, No Go"
----------------------------------
Presenter: Oliver Weidlich

With the improvements in mobile browsers and in the overall
mobile user experience, what do we expect will change for mobile web users? Will we see a 'one web' approach? Oliver will talk about why the mobile and PC web experiences will increase in similarity, but still remain very different.

----------------------------------
Presentation 3: "Building web apps for iPhones"
----------------------------------
Presenters: Tim Lucas & Pete Ottery

Where to start when making a website targetted at iPhone users, including "Should you be?". Frameworks...Javascript...Dev environments... and more. Tim Lucas & Pete Ottery share some experiences about creating iphone.news.com.au.

Aug 1, 2008: iPhoneDevCamp 2 at Adobe Systems

NOTE: The iPhoneDevCamp 2 registration page is now live. If you would like to attend, please use the registration form. Adding your name to this Upcoming page does not constitute event registration.

iPhoneDevCamp 2 is an upcoming gathering to develop applications for iPhone and iPod Touch using both the native SDK and web standards. This follows the first iPhoneDevCamp held at Adobe Systems in San Francisco, July 2007.

Attendees will include Cocoa Touch developers, web developers, UI designers, and testers, all working together over the weekend. Development projects will include both solo and team efforts. While some attendees will wish to work solo during the event, we encourage attendees to team up, based on expertise, to work in ad-hoc project development teams. All attendees should be prepared to work on a development project during the event.

Attendees will be able to:

* Create new applications for iPhone and iPod touch.

* Migrate Mac OS X applications to iPhone and iPod touch.

* Test and optimize applications for iPhone and iPod touch.

The event is being held in Summer 2008, around the time of the public launch of iPhone 2.0 OS and the iTunes App Store. Attendees are encouraged to attend Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference 2008, June 9-13, which includes an iPhone Track.

We are sensitive to the NDA that Apple has in place on the iPhone SDK. It is our hope that Apple will lift this NDA shortly after the public launch of the App Store. iPhoneDevCamp 2 will be held one month after the launch of the App Store. We have no intentions of violating the terms that individual developers have in place with Apple on the iPhone SDK.

The organizers of iPhone Dev Camp 2 include Raven Zachary, Dominic Sagolla, Christopher Allen, Chris Messina, Bart Decrem, whurley, and Blake Burris.

iPhoneDevCamp is not affiliated with Apple, Inc.

Apple, iPhone, and iPod are trademarks of Apple. Other company and product names may be trademarks of their respective owners.
