Nov 29, 2009: Dinner-Music at RENE with Vibhas: Native Flutes, Sax and Piano at RENÉ @ Tlaquepaque, Sedona AZ - Restaurant - Continental

Fine Dining with soothing Live Music by Vibhas Kendzia: Native Flutes, Piano Solos & Soprano Sax over Latin Rhythms

Reservations: (928) 282-9225

The Mexican courtyards, bubbling fountains and ancient stand of sycamores provide an elegant and unique backdrop for a wonderful, reliable Classic French menu with Southwestern touches; the formal setting indoors is balanced by lovely outdoor dining and the gracious service is for all.

Vibhas Kendzia ( http://www.vibhas.org ) performs hauntingly beautiful original melodies on Native Flutes over Latin Rhythms, smooth Jazz on the Soprano Saxophone and romantic Piano Solos at the Keyboard.

Graced by rich melodies and sensual rhythms, Vibhas music explores the essence of beauty and consciousness. Vibhas has toured the US, Europe, and India. His music has been described as gentle, blissful relaxation and creates an atmosphere of peace and well-being.

Vibhas grew up in West Germany and studied piano and flute from the age of five. While receiving a degree in music education from Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt, he had the privilege to study Flute with Rolf Bissinger, flutist for the Frankfurt Opera Orchestra, and Piano with Matitjahu Kellig, well known for his Mozart interpretations. Studies in Latin percussion and traditional instruments from many countries were all influential in his creation of original world music, melting genres from East to West.

His work and personal curiosity brought him to India where he was introduced to meditation, and to the beautiful classical sounds of the East Indian Bansuri, or native bamboo flute. He met and studied with world famous flutist Pundit Hari Prasad Chaurasia. In 1997 Vibhas visited Sedona, AZ where he met Prasado, who became his wife and singing partner.

It was here that he first heard the haunting sounds of the Navajo flute. Playing these traditional native flutes around the Southwest for the last ten years has brought him much praise from the local Native American population, who are fascinated by his intimate feeling for this ancient instrument, and the longing he expresses through it.
It was here that he first heard the haunting sounds of the Navajo flute. Playing these traditional native flutes around the Southwest for the last ten years has brought him much praise from the local Native American population, who are fascinated by his intimate feeling for this ancient instrument, and the longing he expresses through it.

Nov 26, 2009: Mediating Jazz Conference at University of Salford

An international conference hosted by the Popular Music Research Centre, University of Salford

Keynote speaker: Professor Krin Gabbard (SUNY), author of Hotter Than That: The Trumpet, Jazz, and American Culture, Black Magic: White Hollywood and African American Culture, and Jammin' at the Margins: Jazz and the American Cinema.

Mediating Jazz is a two-day multi-disciplinary conference that brings together the leading researchers in the field of new jazz studies. The conference itself will comprise of four key strands, each of which addresses the overarching themes of mediation in jazz:

1. Jazz and the media

We wish to explore the way in which media representation impacts on jazz discourse. The review panel will welcome papers that examine the way in which jazz is represented through various media from Hollywood film to television documentary, sleeve notes to journalism.

2. Performance and the body

Musicians often promote the performance of jazz as an unmediated experience. We invite papers that interrogate this assumption, exploring the relationship between performance and different types of mediation. This could include discussions of jazz as a transcendent art or a gendered construct, as well as examining the mythologies of improvisation, musicianship and the 'jazz life', and the codification of performance practice.

3. Politics and identity

Within the jazz mainstream, the radical politics of the 1960s has arguably been replaced with a sense of homogenised culture, devoid of explicit race and class issues. This strand explores the role mediation plays in the growth and development of identities alongside the promotion/subversion of political messages.

4. Jazz cultures and narratives

This strand explores jazz as both narrative trope and changing cultural signifier. We welcome papers that explore the concept of jazz from a range of disciplinary perspectives, encouraging a discursive approach to the cultural study of jazz.

Abstracts of no more than 300 words should be submitted to Dr Tony Whyton (t.whyton@salford.ac.uk) by Wednesday 27 May 2009.

Review panel: Dr Tony Whyton (Salford), Dr Nicholas Gebhardt (Lancaster), Dr Catherine Tackley (Open University) and Professor George McKay (Salford)

Nov 27, 2009: Allison Crowe's Tidings Concert on Pender Islands at Pender Island Community Hall

Expect plenty of holiday cheer, laced with overtones of Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, The Beatles, jazz and more, when fun and exciting musician Allison Crowe unwraps her “Tidings” tour at the Pender Islands Community Hall.

"Music for the season and all time." Tidings stirs together traditional Christmas carols and holiday favourites with an organic blend of rock, jazz, folk, gospel and soul. "The Yuletide find of the year," says The Record. "Be prepared to be amazed," chimes ChristmasReviews.com

"Allison Crowe has a voice to fall in love with," says UK music industry journal Record of the Day. “She is from Vancouver Island in Canada, descended from Scottish, Irish and Manx stock. She's exactly the sort of artist who can make serious headway on her own label and that's just what she's doing."

When this phenomenon 'from the islands' (Vancouver Island and Newfoundland) reached the mainland she steered a path clear of what Joni Mitchell knowingly calls the record business' "style inventions". With Ani DiFranco as a model of integrity, and Creative Commons licensing changing the "game" for resourceful musicians, Crowe created her own label. Since 2003, Rubenesque Records Ltd has released six critically and commercially successful albums: Lisa’s Song + 6 Songs; Secrets; Tidings; Live at Wood Hall; This Little Bird; and Little Light. Crowe's next album is Spiral.

"The first thing you notice about Allison Crowe is her voice. Rich and dark, it seems to come from a place most singers can only dream of accessing. Then there are the songs. Filled with raw passion and accompanied by Crowe's eloquent piano playing," writes Clodagh O'Connell (The Courier). Hers is a joyous sound: "Elton John meets Edith Piaf." A sensation at the UK's John Lennon Northern Lights Festival, where she performed on a bill with the Queen's Master of Music, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, and the UK's Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy, "Canadian angel Alison Crowe gave one of the weekend's most magical moments," says The Scotsman. Festival Director Mike Merritt describes Crowe as "awesome" and "spine-tingling", noting her performance "put hairs on the back of your neck! She brought the house down."

A true grassroots success, Crowe is praised not only as a singularly talented songwriter - on themes personal as well as worldly - and as an exciting, visceral, performer, but, also, as a supreme interpreter of song. Her vital takes on such 21st century standards as Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" and Joni Mitchell's "River" are applauded as "truly transcendent" and her singular covers have achieved broad, even mainstream, popularity, featured by BBC Radio, MOJO magazine and by acclaimed Hollywood director Zack Snyder (300, The Watchmen).

Longtime NPR broadcaster Ross Hocker calls Allison Crowe's show, "The most honest, heartfelt, and directly intimate concert in my entire life."

A sensation at the UK's John Lennon Northern Lights Festival, where she performed on a bill with the Queen's Master of Music, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, and the UK's Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy, "Canadian angel Alison Crowe gave one of the weekend's most magical moments," says The Scotsman.

There'll be a cavalcade of talent on-stage at St. Andrew's United Church for Tidings 2009. The commitment and dedication of those who nurture such talent shines through - and explains why Nanaimo is world-renowned for the calibre of it musical ambassadors. The Tidings line-up is especially indebted to Andrea Bertram, Vocalist and Teacher at Andrea Bertram Studio, and Rick Becker, Band Master at Woodlands Secondary School - along with all teachers and mentors in the community, at home, and school.

Dec 18, 2009: Allison Crowe's Tidings in Corner Brook at First United Church

Expect joy, thrills and plenty of holiday cheer, laced with overtones of Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, The Beatles, jazz and more, when Allison Crowe wraps up her "Tidings" tour at home on the east coast - inside Corner Brook's First United Church.

“Allison is a force to be reckoned with in Corner Brook and Newfoundland," says Jeffrey Pitcher, Artistic Director of Theatre Newfoundland & Labrador. "The fact that she chooses to live here is nothing short of astonishing and I believe it's because her talent and drive transcends all borders. She sings and her voice tells me I'm not in Newfoundland - I'm in Allison's heart. No matter where she is in this world, that voice, that conviction, it crosses all borders. She's one of those rare artists that fits into any culture, any community because she is who she is - an incredible talent.”

"Allison Crowe has a voice to fall in love with. She is," notes says UK music industry journal Record of the Day, "descended from Scottish, Irish and Manx stock.

Longtime NPR broadcaster Ross Hocker calls Allison Crowe's show, "The most honest, heartfelt, and directly intimate concert in my entire life."

Dec 5, 2009: Allison Crowe's Campbell River Tidings at St. Peter's Anglican Church

Allison Crowe's "Tidings" Concert ~ with the Campbell River Childrens Choir and Director Barbara Prowse

Expect plenty of holiday cheer, laced with overtones of Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, The Beatles, jazz and more, when Allison Crowe, together with guests, the Campbell River Childrens Choir with Director Barbara Prowse, bring "Tidings".

This holiday concert also brings aid to a pair of essential non-profit groups: the Campbell River Hospice Society and CR Food Bank. The mission of the Hospice Society is "to provide compassionate support and companionship to individuals facing death, their families and friends and to those grieving a loss due to death". The group's motto: "Support when you need it most". The Campbell River Food Bank fills another great need in the community. For more than two decades now, it has provided sustenance for people year-round. Though the holiday season brings joy, it can mean extra stresses for many. In today's difficult economic times the work of the Food Bank's volunteers is especially beneficial now. Donation of non-perishable foods is greatly appreciated - and any food donations will be collected at the concert! Campbell River's Ron Nicolaye is, once again, the impresario bringing together music and people for a special night of fun and fundraising.

Leading off this night of festive fun will be the voices of the Campbell River Children's Choir. The Chamber choir is all girls and there are boys and girls in the main choral groups. The community-based C.R. Children's Choir helps youth experience the joy of music, learn about other cultures and work with internationally acclaimed musicians at home and abroad. Over the years, the choir has performed in venues across Canada, the United States, Cuba and England. Some of the choir's singers have gone on to pursue careers as performers or, even, to have choirs of their own.

The Chamber Choir is a group of dedicated young people who attend extra rehearsals and challenge their skills with more difficult music. They will perform with, and under the guidance of, Director Barbara Prowse. Since joining in last year’s Tidings concert, the troupe has sung at the Pacific Rim Children's' Choir Festival in Hawaii and with Su Hart of the Afro Celtic Band "Baka Beyond".

Playing not only blues, but rock, pop, jazz, country, oldies, motown, disco, and Americana actually makes J. Blues a very versatile and sought after guitarist. J. Blues is a college graduate with two degrees in music. In 1992 he was awarded the Playhouse Scholarship in Cleveland to further his collegiate studies. He expects to obtain his masters degree in Jazz Guitar Performance in 2010.

Going for the One is a Yes tribute band based in Western New York. This exciting ensemble brings together five superb musicians who each have a rich history in performing progressive rock. Lead singer Jimmy Warlick possesses the high range necessary for Yes music and delivers the vocals with skill and confidence.

The rest of the band is a combination of virtuoso players: John Covach on guitars; Chris Meeker on bass; Rich DellaPietra on keyboards; and Mario Encina on drums. Everybody in the band sings, allowing the group to accurately reproduce not only the demanding and powerful instrumental passages, but also the lush vocal harmonies found on the studio albums. The Rick Ray Band opens the show!

Dec 4, 2009: Allison Crowe's Tidings in Ladysmith at Ladysmith First United Church

Expect plenty of holiday cheer, laced with overtones of Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, The Beatles, jazz and more, when Allison Crowe and guest artist Lena Birtwistle light up Ladysmith with “Tidings”.

She's exactly the sort of artist who can make serious headway on her own label and that's just what she's doing." Longtime NPR broadcaster Ross Hocker calls Allison Crowe's show, "The most honest, heartfelt, and directly intimate concert in my entire life."

Hers is a joyous sound: "Elton John meets Edith Piaf."

Lena Birtwistle open this Tidings concert with a distinctive set of folk/pop songs tinged with country hues. The singer/songwriter, for whom Ladysmith is home, has been sharing her music and quirky sense of humour all over the Island for the last four years. Citing such inspirations as Eva Cassidy, Fleetwood Mac, The Dixie Chicks, Steve Poltz, and Barenaked Ladies, her songs and stories are blended with a touch that’s very much her own. Alongside a focus on her solo career, Lena Birtwistle has recently teamed up with musician Sid Johnson, (Holly McNarland, Kinnie Starr), to form "The Adamantines". The duo, more rock/roots based, is working hard on songwriting, recording, and promoting the release of their debut EP, "Empires" (created with Zak Cohen at the Woodshop Recording Studio just north of Duncan).

Nov 13, 2009: "Mr. Rat Pack" Frank Lamphere Sings Retro-Pop & Jazz at Viand

Step back into an early sixties (pre-Beatles) musical atmosphere every Friday night as "Mr. Rat Pack" Frank Lamphere sings retro-pop & jazz, backed by his swingin' Rat Pack Jazz Trio.

A regular part of Lamphere's sets are tributes to Dean Martin (vocally, one of the best around), Tony Bennett and of course Frank Sinatra. Known to break into a classic Italian melody (Al Di La, Volare, Ciao Ciao Bambina) with little if any accent, Frank can be persuaded to perform an Elvis or Tom Jones number, when the mood is right.

He is accompanied by pianist Larry Harris and former drummer with George Shearing, Rusty Jones. Dancing is encouraged. Viand is located in the Courtyard by Marriott (a block east of Michigan Avenue on Ontario)

Nov 27, 2009: The Sizzle Suite at Ginglik

The Shoe Strung are making their debut in West London’s premier beat bunker. Although only young, they have long since sold their collective souls to the Devil, who almost gave up waiting at the crossroads, as no lost souls had past for many moons. That is however, until these young fellas rocked up and asked him to re-tune their guitars in the darkness…....With a rich heritage of music flowing through their collective DNA, The Shoestrung sound collides Howlin’ Wolf, The Small Faces, Muddy Waters & The Stones (to name just a few!!) with their raw energy and youthful exuberance to devastating effect!!
www.myspace.com/theshoestrung
Hosted by Count Sizzle, who will be spinning killer vintage 45's from sleazy old time jazz to early heavy funk and everything in between (and we do mean everything!). Plus Guest DJ's. www.myspace.com/countsizzle

Jan 2, 2010: Monsters of Bass: Doug Johns Duo, Bryan Beller Band at The Winchester Tavern & Music Hall

Bassist, composer, arranger and clinician Doug Johns is a great talent, a seasoned studio musician, and an undeniable stage presence. Doug can be seen on national stages with his two-man project, the Doug Johns Duo, featuring drummer Chris Ceja.

Doug has had the privilege of working with such greats as Victor Wooten, Buddy Miles, Dweezil Zappa, Dana Rasch, The LA Mass Choir, Grammy winning producer Aaron Lindsey, Steve Smith, and many others.
Bassist, clinician and composer, Bryan Beller is a master of the bass guitar, and degreed by Berklee College Of Music. He landed a gig with Dweezil and Ahmet Zappa’s tweaked rock project Z. The band also included Mike Keneally, a true Frank Zappa Band alumnus and freakishly talented guitarist/composer who Bryan continues to work with to this day.

Beller’s well-rounded experience made him a natural session-ace choice for guitar legend Steve Vai, who tracked him on six albums (including the Grammy-nominated “Lotus Feet”) before Vai tapped him for his own full-blown collaboration with the Metropol Orchestra. Bryan has also worked with such artists as ex-MC5 guitarist Wayne Kramer, Kira Small and more. Bryan is also a masterclass clinician for Mike Lull Custom Guitars, SWR Amplification and D’Addario Strings.

Ryan Ferren opens the show. Through the use of tapping, off kilter time signatures and melody, Ryan combines math rock and instrumental post rock with his own somewhat bizarre vision to create compelling original music with beautiful and complex sonic landscapes.
