Aug 8, 2009: Dinner Music at "RENÉ" with Vibhas: Native Flutes, Sax and Piano at RENÉ @ Tlaquepaque, Sedona AZ - Restaurant - Continental

Fine Dining with soothing Live Music by Vibhas Kendzia: Native Flutes, Piano Solos & Soprano Sax over Latin Rhythms

Reservations: (928) 282-9225

The Mexican courtyards, bubbling fountains and ancient stand of sycamores provide an elegant and unique backdrop for a wonderful, reliable Classic French menu with Southwestern touches; the formal setting indoors is balanced by lovely outdoor dining and the gracious service is for all.

Vibhas Kendzia ( http://www.musicfromthegarden.com ) performs hauntingly beautiful original melodies on Native Flutes over Latin Rhythms, smooth Jazz on the Soprano Saxophone and romantic Piano Solos at the Keyboard.

Graced by rich melodies and sensual rhythms, Vibhas music explores the essence of beauty and consciousness. Vibhas has toured the US, Europe, and India. His music has been described as gentle, blissful relaxation and creates an atmosphere of peace and well-being.

Vibhas grew up in West Germany and studied piano and flute from the age of five. While receiving a degree in music education from Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt, he had the privilege to study Flute with Rolf Bissinger, flutist for the Frankfurt Opera Orchestra, and Piano with Matitjahu Kellig, well known for his Mozart interpretations. Studies in Latin percussion and traditional instruments from many countries were all influential in his creation of original world music, melting genres from East to West.

His work and personal curiosity brought him to India where he was introduced to meditation, and to the beautiful classical sounds of the East Indian Bansuri, or native bamboo flute. He met and studied with world famous flutist Pundit Hari Prasad Chaurasia. In 1997 Vibhas visited Sedona, AZ where he met Prasado, who became his wife and singing partner.
It was here that he first heard the haunting sounds of the Navajo flute. Playing these traditional native flutes around the Southwest for the last seven years has brought him much praise from the local Native American population, who are fascinated by his intimate feeling for this ancient instrument, and the longing he expresses through it.

Nov 26, 2009: Mediating Jazz Conference at University of Salford

An international conference hosted by the Popular Music Research Centre, University of Salford

Keynote speaker: Professor Krin Gabbard (SUNY), author of Hotter Than That: The Trumpet, Jazz, and American Culture, Black Magic: White Hollywood and African American Culture, and Jammin' at the Margins: Jazz and the American Cinema.

Mediating Jazz is a two-day multi-disciplinary conference that brings together the leading researchers in the field of new jazz studies. The conference itself will comprise of four key strands, each of which addresses the overarching themes of mediation in jazz:

1. Jazz and the media

We wish to explore the way in which media representation impacts on jazz discourse. The review panel will welcome papers that examine the way in which jazz is represented through various media from Hollywood film to television documentary, sleeve notes to journalism.

2. Performance and the body

Musicians often promote the performance of jazz as an unmediated experience. We invite papers that interrogate this assumption, exploring the relationship between performance and different types of mediation. This could include discussions of jazz as a transcendent art or a gendered construct, as well as examining the mythologies of improvisation, musicianship and the 'jazz life', and the codification of performance practice.

3. Politics and identity

Within the jazz mainstream, the radical politics of the 1960s has arguably been replaced with a sense of homogenised culture, devoid of explicit race and class issues. This strand explores the role mediation plays in the growth and development of identities alongside the promotion/subversion of political messages.

4. Jazz cultures and narratives

This strand explores jazz as both narrative trope and changing cultural signifier. We welcome papers that explore the concept of jazz from a range of disciplinary perspectives, encouraging a discursive approach to the cultural study of jazz.

Abstracts of no more than 300 words should be submitted to Dr Tony Whyton (t.whyton@salford.ac.uk) by Wednesday 27 May 2009.

Review panel: Dr Tony Whyton (Salford), Dr Nicholas Gebhardt (Lancaster), Dr Catherine Tackley (Open University) and Professor George McKay (Salford)

Jul 26, 2009: Ancient-Future.Com Records 30th Anniversary CD Release Party at Freight & Salvage Coffee House

This triple bill features the pioneering world fusion music group Ancient Future, scalloped fretboard guitarist Matthew Montfort, and Mariah Parker's Indo Latin Jazz ensemble. This 30th anniversary CD release party features music from three new releases celebrating 30 years of world fusion music.

'Planet Passion' by Ancient Future has been remastered to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the band, and features top masters of Indian, Nepalese, African, Cuban, Celtic, Arabic, Palestinian, Jewish, Indonesian, Chinese, Eastern European and American music traditions performing music on the theme of mythical stories of love. BILLBOARD calls the group Ancient Future “trendsetters” for their early contributions to the world fusion music movement, which seeks to show how people from different cultures can grow by learning from each other. Ancient Future has grown to become a large multinational music ensemble with many smaller ensembles within it. The version of Ancient Future performing on this bill concentrates on Arabic, Indian, and Spanish musical themes, and has performed in Spain at festivals in Sant Carles de la Ràpita, Botarell, Torredembarra, and Salou.

'Seven Serenades for Scalloped Fretboard Guitar' is the debut solo recording by Ancient Future leader Matthew Montfort. This improvised recording showcases his pioneering work on the scalloped fretboard guitar, a special modified instrument able to produce ornaments more characteristic of the sitar.

'Sangria' by Mariah Parker blends the driving rhythmic syncopations of Latin jazz with the entrancing, assymetrical meters of East India. This debut recording features her original compositions that draw musical inspiration from Brazil, Cuba, Spain, and India. The musicians performing with Mariah Parker's Indo Latin Jazz Ensemble and with Ancient Future include Matthew Montfort (scalloped fretboard, flamenco, and fretless guitars), Mariah Parker (piano, santur), Kash Killion (bass, cello, sarangi), and Debopriyo Sarkar (tabla), plus surprise guest musicians.

Jul 11, 2009: Darren Motamedy dinner-dance at Pogacha of Issaquah at Pogacha of Issaquah

Acclaimed local jazz saxophonist Darren Motamedy will entertain guests at a dinner/dance open to the public. Motamedy is a regular performer in the bar on Saturday nights. For this event Motamedy will perform in Pogacha's back dining room, where guests can eat, listen and dance. Dinner reservations are strongly recommended by calling 425-392-5550.

Born in 1959 in Los Angeles, Motamedy has been playing music since fifth grade when his family moved to Seattle. He started on the clarinet. Soon school lessons expanded to private lessons. "My first teacher taught me to transpose music, write music, and learn all of my scales." Those early lessons were the foundation for where he is today.

He auditioned on his clarinet for his high school jazz band but later took up sax. He continue his studies in symphonic band on the clarinet, and begin his venture into jazz on the saxophone. He started playing jazz with a 1920s silver "Holton" alto saxophone, one that he still owns and treasures to this day.

Motamedy elected to focus his energy playing the saxophone, clarinet, and flute at Central Washington University, a school renowned for its extensive music department. He not only received the music department's prestigious "Presser Scholarship" but also graduated with a degree in Music Education.

Motamedy has thrilled his audiences with his music, and has released six CDs that have won critical acclaim. He served as ambassador of music to Taiwan during the 2000 Northwest Culture Celebration in Taipei. While there he met Chateau St. Michelle wineries executive chef John Sarich, who encouraged him to write a theme song for Sarich's television show "The Best of Taste." Motamedy did that and every week 40,000 listeners are treated to Motamedy's "The Best of Taste" theme music on Sarich's cooking show.

Entertainment is free with paid dinner.
