Aug 20, 2008: August 2008 Workshop: Mobile Website Usability at University of Phoenix (San Jose Learning Center)

Mobile Website Usability
Brands on the web live and die by the quality of the user experience. As the web expands from the laptop to the handheld, the rules change and the game gets harder. To develop a meaningful and intuitive brand experience on the mobile web, designers, technologists, and business owners must consider new constraints on user interactions, and account for them in innovative ways.

As the mobile web matures, we see more and more people with their mobile devices in hand, searching for hotel rooms, reading the news, or just playing video games. People are more connected with their mobile phone today than any other electronic device they use.

But how do you connect with users through mobile web sites and create exceptional experiences that are both functional and captivating?

During 2007, Molecular conducted a unique research project which sought to explore, analyze, and understand how users are interacting with the mobile web. More specifically, this exercise looked to understand what users expect from their applications, identify common usability mistakes, and recognize emerging design patterns in the mobile Internet. This presentation will share some of Molecular's findings, and discuss the impact for companies seeking to promote their brand on the mobile web. Usability expert Evan Gerber will provide insight on what these findings mean for the future of the mobile web and how you can apply it your business and improve you mobile marketing success.

Attendees will learn:
* The common weaknesses of the mobile interface, and how to avoid them
* Best practices for creating an engaging and memorable interface on handheld devices
* Critical differences between the mobile web and traditional web experiences
* Common problems inherent in current mobile design
* How users perform tasks on handheld devices
* The difference between miniaturization and mobilization

Speaker: Evan Gerber, Senior Consultant, User Experience, Molecular

Jul 28, 2008: Mobile Portland -- iPhone App Store at AboutUs offices

July 11th marked the release of iPhone 3G and with it, Software Update 2.0, which includes Apple's launch of the App Store. The App Store allows for third party developers to create and distribute applications for iPhone and iPod touch using the iPhone SDK, a native development environment based on Cocoa for Mac OS X.

In his talk, Raven will provide a basic overview of the process of developing and distributing software for the iPhone and iPod touch, and share some key findings and metrics gathered in the two weeks since the launch of the App Store. What does the App Store mean for third party mobile developers?

Raven Zachary is the founder of iPhoneDevCamp, a not-for-profit gathering to develop applications for iPhone and iPod touch using both the native SDK and web standards, and is a technology industry analyst with The 451 Group, where he covers open source technology.

Raven's interest in Apple's mobile technology extends back to the Newton in the mid-1990s, and he was a former MacWEEK columnist covering Apple's launch of Mac OS X. He is regularly quoted by the media on issues relating to the iPhone and separately, open source.

Aug 1, 2008: iPhoneDevCamp 2 at Adobe Systems

NOTE: The iPhoneDevCamp 2 registration page is now live. If you would like to attend, please use the registration form. Adding your name to this Upcoming page does not constitute event registration.

iPhoneDevCamp 2 is an upcoming gathering to develop applications for iPhone and iPod Touch using both the native SDK and web standards. This follows the first iPhoneDevCamp held at Adobe Systems in San Francisco, July 2007.

Attendees will include Cocoa Touch developers, web developers, UI designers, and testers, all working together over the weekend. Development projects will include both solo and team efforts. While some attendees will wish to work solo during the event, we encourage attendees to team up, based on expertise, to work in ad-hoc project development teams. All attendees should be prepared to work on a development project during the event.

Attendees will be able to:

* Create new applications for iPhone and iPod touch.

* Migrate Mac OS X applications to iPhone and iPod touch.

* Test and optimize applications for iPhone and iPod touch.

The event is being held in Summer 2008, around the time of the public launch of iPhone 2.0 OS and the iTunes App Store. Attendees are encouraged to attend Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference 2008, June 9-13, which includes an iPhone Track.

We are sensitive to the NDA that Apple has in place on the iPhone SDK. It is our hope that Apple will lift this NDA shortly after the public launch of the App Store. iPhoneDevCamp 2 will be held one month after the launch of the App Store. We have no intentions of violating the terms that individual developers have in place with Apple on the iPhone SDK.

The organizers of iPhone Dev Camp 2 include Raven Zachary, Dominic Sagolla, Christopher Allen, Chris Messina, Bart Decrem, whurley, and Blake Burris.

iPhoneDevCamp is not affiliated with Apple, Inc.

Apple, iPhone, and iPod are trademarks of Apple. Other company and product names may be trademarks of their respective owners.

Sep 2, 2008: Mobile+ Summit at Hyatt Regency Kiev

The “Mobile+ Summit - Winning Strategies for a New Mobile Economy” will take place from 2-3 September 2008 in Kyiv / Kiev, Ukraine, which is the second largest and one of the most competitive mobile communications markets in Central & Eastern Europe. The Ukrainian regulator is also planning to finally issue 3G licenses in the second half of 2008, in addition to the one license currently granted to Ukrtelecom.

One focus of the Mobile+ Summit in Kyiv will be the regulatory landscape in the region, including upcoming issuing of 3G licenses in CEE, CIS and Russia. A special spotlight will be put on the latest regulatory plans for the re-using of analogue radio and TV broadcasting spectrum, after the outcome of the WRC 2007 conference. We will also take a look at regulatory policies that foster healthy competition in maturing mobile markets.

Another major focus will be the monetization of mobile broadband, to secure ROI on 3.5G and mobile WiMAX technologies. Our major focal point will be mobile Value-added Services (VAS), with a special focus on EDGE and 3G / HSPA VAS. While take-up of mobile TV is problematic, mobile video-streaming is emerging as a key revenue driver for 3G/EDGE VAS, along with extensions of Web 2.0 applications to include mobile devices. Another major focus will be mobile and 3G advertising, including video calls, location-based advertising, etc. We will also be looking at other revenue streams, such as wallpapers, ringtones, etc.

As the markets in Central Asia are increasing penetration, and thus competition, they will soon face the same problems as the saturated markets in CEE. The markets in CEE have reached saturation with penetration rates of 100% and more, so we will be taking a look at differentiation and diversification strategies for operators, and ways to increase customer loyalty and reduce churn. We will also talk about how operators can take advantage of their fixed and mobile stakes to offer fixed-mobile convergence products as an added value to consumers.

Sep 23, 2008: First International Workshop on Trends in Pervasive and Ubiquitous Geotechnology and Geoinformation at The Yarrow Resort Hotel and Conference Center

OVERVIEW

The aim of the First International Workshop on Trends in Pervasive and Ubiquitous Geotechnology and Geoinformation (TIPUGG 2008) is to bring together researchers from various fields to discuss trends in pervasive and ubiquitous geotechnology and geoinformation and their impact on the day-to-day application of geography by consumers and geo-friendly industries such as tourism and education.

DETAILS

Thanks to the rapid advancement of mobile technology and the increased prevalence of geographic data sets that have both global coverage and local detail, it has become possible to access and experience in new ways massive amounts of spatially relevant information about nearly anywhere in the world. In this workshop, we will discuss the issues (both human factors and engineering challenges) surrounding these context-aware systems. While we will include any research topic that relates either to geotechnology or geoinformation, we will focus on the theory behind and application of systems that successfully and rigorously combine the two. Furthermore, we will particularly highlight research that is able to combine the two in a manner that creates a value to the end user that is greater than the sum of the parts. Finally, we will also discuss broader questions related to pervasive and ubiquitous geotechnology and geoinformation. For instance, how will these new capabilities transform the way we experience the world around us? How will they alter our interaction with geography? Also, how will the use of common consumer technologies (media players such as iPods, game systems like the PSP, multi-touch enabled mobile devices, etc.) change when these technologies become location-aware?

TOPIC SUGGESTIONS

- Context-aware mobile services
- Security, privacy and social factors of new geotechnologies and geoinformation
- New applications of geotechnology and geoinformation
- Spatial applications of Web 2.0 phenomena (Wikipedia text, Flickr photos, etc).
- Mobile map services for tourism
- Mobile map services for education
- Pervasive GI services
- Novel ubiquitous computing geo-applications
- Geo-services that address real human problems (e.g. emergency cases).
- Multi-modal, intelligent, collaborative and novice user interfaces for geo-applications
- Geo-services for community
- GIS interaction paradigms in ubiquitous computing
- Technologies to improve collection of volunteered geographic information
- Personalization and situation awareness of mobile GI services
- Semantics and ontologies in pervasive computing
- GIS sensors for mobile applications
- LBS, mobile GIS and more

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

The deadline for workshop paper submissions is May 15, 2008. Paper notification will occur by July 1, 2008. The workshop itself will be held September 23, 2008 in Park City, Utah (the location of GIScience 2008). Papers are to be no more than 2000 words and submitted in LNCS format (http://www.springer.com/computer/lncs?SGWID=0-164-2- 72376-0) using the easychair conference system (http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=tipugg2008). High quality submissions will be considered for a possible special issue of the journal Personal and Ubiquitous Computing.

Aug 29, 2008: Con-X-treme at San Mateo Marriott San Francisco Airport Hotel

Promoting the creation of animation and all things Media.

WHAT IS CON-X-TREME?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CON-X-TREME is volunteer-run event held this year over the extended Labor Day weekend at the San Mateo Marriott Hotel. The primary area of emphasis is focused on the creation of art and other media, traditional and non-traditional, without the limitation of holding true to a certain theme or topic.
While some may view this as simply it is another anime or science fiction convention event, the real opportunities this event brings forward is an opportunity for fans of all mediums to meet and network with both other fans and professionals alike. Whether it be physical art, virtual art, film & television, video games or music, CON-X-TREME attempts to have compelling, knowledgeable, and well-spoken Guests of Honor who are willing to spend time sharing their experiences within their respective industries, mentoring our attendees through discussion panels, classroom instruction, and other programming events.
Throughout each day of the weekend event, CON-X-TREME presents curriculum through a series of classroom programming where event members may participate in the discussion or hands-on study of particular subjects.
CON-X-TREME is not all classrooms, lectures, and study however, as we temper much of the proceeding with many other programming alternatives including, but not limited to, the following:
v A 24-hour anime programming room featuring professional and fan-created animation videos and programs;
v A room dedicated to premiering the latest in console and computer video games and technology;
v Dedicated space for costume gatherings and workshops which will culminate in a full costume contest event;
v Event space which promotes and displays artwork from many of the Bay Area’s most vibrant and popular artists;
All in all, CON-X-TREME aspires to provide opportunities for the truly creative side of fans and professionals to mix freely within an environment which inspires creativity and spontaneity.
