Nov 13, 2008: Reclaim Yuba Sutter’s Architectural Survivors at Book Launching Party at Mary Aaron Memorial Museum

Historic architecture, horse and carriage rides, wine tasting and community spirit are all a part of a Book Launching Party hosted by the Mary Aaron Memorial.

“It is our hope that we may live in harmony with our architectural past and that our generation may in turn create an equally harmonious future for the generations that succeed us.” So ends the preface of the 1974 publication, The Survivors: Existing homes and buildings of Yuba and Sutter Counties’ past.

The authors, Janet R. Sullivan and Mary-Jane Zall, were inspired, as many are today, by the elegance, charm and unique place in history these early buildings and homes embodied. They were also determined to raise awareness that monuments such as these tend to give slowly away to the needs of a developing city. Unfortunately, The Survivors, after being out-of-print for over thirty years, has been a waning force in preserving Yuba-Sutter’s architecture…until now.

The book itself has become a monument, a significant piece of Yuba-Sutter history and a survivor in its own right. For this reason, along with the commitment of its members to renew the community’s interest in local history, the Mary Aaron Memorial Museum of Marysville, California has announced its re-publication of The Survivors.

Although some very minor changes were made, the publisher and the editors have taken great care to preserve the content and design of the first printing. It contains over fifty images of significant and familiar structures in the Yuba-Sutter area, including the Danville House, the Old Harter Home, the Ramirez Home (otherwise known as “The Castle”), Sutter’s Hock Farm and the Harkey House. The authors provided invaluable information about each building, giving historical backgrounds of the initial occupants and commenting on each building’s architectural elements and historical context.

The message of the book is clear: if we are to preserve our heritage, we must preserve it purposefully, consciously and out of a genuine appreciation. The preservation of The Survivors was also purposeful and certainly inspired by appreciation for the authors and their original intentions. Thanks in part to the efforts of Mrs. Zall and Mrs. Sullivan, only a minimal number of the buildings mentioned in the original edition have been destroyed. This book, therefore, as was the hope of two community members in 1974, remains a work about survivors. Their legacy continues…

Oct 11, 2008: Artist Carlos Luna: Gallery Talk with the Artist and Curator at Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale

Meet Artist Carlos Luna and learn more about the new exhibition of ceramics and paintings
MOA members free, non-members free with paid exhibition admission.
For more information, contact (954) 525-5500 ext 241 or e-mail education1@moafl.org

Read more about artist/paintings: We are pleased to introduce the Museum’s 2008-2009 Artist in Residence - Carlos Luna. Luna’s work is bold and heraldic with a distinctly Latino vernacular. A gifted storyteller, his art channels his life and times from Cuba to Mexico to the United States. Part of that personal history has to do with the artist’s admiration for Pablo Picasso, which led to a conversation about the Spanish master’s ceramics in the Museum’s collection.

Bernie Bercuson, a Miami Beach hotelier, very generously donated a collection of 66 editioned ceramics by Picasso in 1991. Brilliantly conceived and impeccably fabricated, these multiples of plates, platters, and plaques are decorated in Picasso’s inimitable style with bullfights, dancers, and Don Quixote; while pitchers, tankards, and vases are equally deftly transformed into owls and beautiful women. Just as Picasso first learned from, then transformed the art of the past, contemporary artists continue to engage with the art of Picasso (directly or indirectly) as exhibitions, catalogues, and articles over recent years attest.

For his Artist in Residence exhibition, Luna chose to create this installation that combines his recent paintings with a personally selected group of fifty Picasso ceramics from the Museum’s collection and which underscore the graphic and decorative quality in his own work. There are subjects – owls, roosters, and male and female protagonists – that one finds in both artists’ work. But Picasso / Luna is less an exercise in finding sources of influence, than simply creating an exciting new channel of communication between the works of two artists. More at http://www.moafl.org/exhi_luna.htm
Pablo PICASSO Ceramics | Carlos LUNA Paintings is on view through February 23, 2009.

Oct 23, 2008: Icons of Presence: Asian American Activist Art at Chinese Culture Center

The public is invited to attend the opening of the Chinese Culture Center's new exhibition, Icons of Presence: Asian American Activist Art, organized by guest curator and scholar Margo Machida.

Icons of Presence highlights the substantial role of printmaking and graphics as a powerful means of social expression for Asian American visual culture. It showcases both graphic art and posters from the landmark decades of the 1970s and '80s, and more recent work by Jim Dong, Nancy Hom, and Leland Wong, who played a pivotal role in the San Francisco Bay area's Asian American arts movement. Putting the work of these three Chinese American artists in a wider context, the exhibition and its accompanying catalog also emphasize the range of influences that have shaped their art and cultural activism.

Icons of Presence is conceived as a counterpart to Asian/ American/ Modern Art: Shifting Currents, 1900-1970. This national historical survey exhibition of Asian American art, with significant West Coast representation, is on view at the de Young Museum in San Francisco from October 25, 2008 - January 18, 2009. Since the de Young show does not extend through the '70s or beyond - the period that witnessed the rise of the Asian American movement and cultural politics - Icons of Presence foregrounds the activist turn in Asian American visual art. By focusing on the work of these three individuals, Icons of Presence provides a slice of a larger history in American art that is both national and international in scope, to which these still-active Chinese American artists bring their own distinctive perspectives.

Icons of Presence is on view to the public from October 23, 2008 to January 3, 2009. Opening reception: Oct. 23, 2008 at 6:30 PM

Free.
Two Class Times:
What are all those 1s and 0s that make up binary code? And for that matter, what's binary code? Students ages 6 and up learn how computers use this 'digital' language to send, process, and receive information. By using beads to represent a switch's on and off states (1 and 0), students use binary code to pattern their initials in a beaded key chain.

Oct 14, 2008: Body Perspectives at Dana Centre

Join us as we explore new ways of looking at the human body, both inside and out.

Your own body could be up for scrutiny by Richard Allen and a shape analysis booth. Pop inside and get your body outline scanned and displayed, if you dare. How does your body shape match up to what you think you look like?

Release your creative potential in a special life drawing class with a techno-twist, led by artist Jeanine Breaker. Find out what lies underneath the skin of our life models as we project MRI scans of their insides onto their bodies as they pose.

MRI technology has revolutionised medical scanning and allows us to look more fully at human anatomy. Join Julie Fitzpatrick and Louise Thomas as they talk through how MRI is being used to look at fat distribution under our skin and around our organs.

And discover how infrared light is used to get under the skin of patients with Clare Elwell.

Please be aware that this event will include a nude live-art drawing class.

Part of The Big Draw

Speakers
•Jeanine Breaker, artist, Nottingham Trent University
