Aug 1, 2008: Row Boats on the Lake - Central Park - New York City at Loeb Boathouse - Central Park

At twenty-two acres the Lake in Central Park offers one of the most peaceful and bucolic settings existing at the center of any city in America. And what better way to enjoy this sanctuary than from one of the easily available excursion crafts (row boats). From Bethesda Fountain to Bow Bridge it is easy to imagine yourself, on a lazy summer afternoon, drifting along in your very own Merchant Ivory production (parasols optional). The waterside Boathouse Restaurant also offers an elegant location for refreshment while watching the navigational efforts of other intrepid urban mariners.

Located: Central Park's Lake — at the Loeb Boathouse on the east side between 74th and 75th Sts.

April through October, weather permitting. Row boats can be rented at the Loeb Boathouse daily, 10:00am to 5:30pm (last rental). The boats must be return by 6:30pm. Rentals cost $10 for the first hour, and $2.50 each additional 15 minutes; $30 cash deposit required. Up to five people per boat. Gondola Rides are also available during the summer from 5:00pm to 9:00pm Mon.-Fri. and 2:00pm to 9:00pm Sat.-Sun. Rides cost $30 per half hour - No reservations. For more information call: (212) 517-2233

About Loeb Boathouse: The Loeb Boathouse, one of the most famous icons of Central Park is located at the northeastern tip of the Lake and houses the Boathouse Restaurant. It is a romantic setting for dinner on a mid-summer’s evening, watching the sun sink behind the trees and maybe catching a gondola slowly poling past.

Around 1874, Calvert Vaux designed a two-story boathouse at the eastern end of the Lake. About the new Boathouse Vaux said: “In order to compensate for the interruption of the view from the walk, and better accommodate those who should wish to wait in the vicinity, the roof was made a deck to be covered with awnings furnished with seats.” The original structure served nobly for eighty years until the 1950’s, by which time it was so run down that it had to be demolished. The current Boathouse took its place in 1954 and was largely financed with a gift from investment banker Carl Loeb.

Dec 1, 2008: Retrace Washington Irving's Ichabod Crane in Sleepy Hollow at The Sleepy Hollow Cemetery

Visit Sleepy Hollow Home of Ichabod Crane by Washington Irving

Sleepy Hollow, formally known as North Tarrytown, was made famous by author Washington Irving's story of Ichabod Crane's encounter with the Headless Horseman. Located along the Hudson River, the small town offers beautiful walks along the Croton Aqueduct Trailway and Rockefeller State Preserve. Pass the Old Dutch Church cemetery with graves from the 1600s, and tour Philipsburg Manor for a look into the past of Colonial life.

Sleepy Hollow Country by Jim Logan

Visitors to “Sleepy Hollow Country,” as Washington Irving called the area, can explore a number of historic locations related to The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Irving himself. Except for Irving's hometown of Manhattan, the following listings are all within a few minutes drive of Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.

If you don't mind a little walking, you can easily trace Ichabod Crane's famous ride up the Albany Post Road (now Route 9, Broadway). There are several local sites Irving may have had in mind for the Van Tassel farm, but the dominant version revolves around the former Elizabeth Van Tassel house at what is now the northeast corner of Hamilton Place and North Broadway in Tarrytown, now occupied by the Landmark Condominium building. From the site of the Elizabeth Van Tassel house, walk north about 0.3 mile on Route 9 (North Broadway) to the André captors' monument in Patriots Park, the spot where Ichabod was met by the headless horseman. From here you can, if you wish, approximate Ichabod's flight by galloping frantically along Broadway until you reach the Old Dutch Church, about 0.6 mile.

Aug 11, 2008: Retrace Washington Irving's Ichabod Crane in Sleepy Hollow at The Sleepy Hollow Cemetery

Old Dutch Burying Ground and the Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow

Sunnyside - Washington Irving’s meticulously restored home is filled with the author's possessions including his writing desk and books. Originally a Dutch farmer’s house, it is now a property of the non-profit Historic Hudson Valley and open for tours.
At the moment we think our limitations are real but according to Buddha, they are completely illusory. Through understanding the true nature of reality we learn to let go of these perceived limitations and instead become the person we wish to be. In this way our life becomes a joyful path gradually leading towards enlightenment. These profound and stimulating teachings have the power to revolutionize our outlook on life.

July 7 Wisdom Dance

Dealing with Delusions:

According to Buddha, our unhappiness and problems come from painful and distorted states of mind which we call delusions. The essence of Buddhist practice is to identify and let go of these delusions, and gradually to replace them with their virtuous opponents: peaceful and clear minds which produce happiness. In this course we will be given practical guidelines to bring this about through meditation and daily life practice.

The Police Announce Final Concert of their Reunion Tour to be Held at Madison Square Garden Aug. 7

Tickets Only Available Through New York Public Television Stations

Concert Set to Be Biggest Fundraising Event in History of Public Television

Tickets Became Available To the Public Beginning June 14 on Thirteen, WLIW21 and ThirteenHD

Kicks Off "Public Television Rocks!" - New Initiative from Thirteen and WLIW21 to Bring Excitement to Public Television Nationwide

The Police, in conjunction with New York public television stations Thirteen/WNET and WLIW21, have announced that after fourteen months of a record-breaking tour, their much anticipated final concert, will take place on Thursday, August 7, 2008, at Madison Square Garden, featuring special guests the B-52s. In a groundbreaking partnership, tickets to the concert will only be available through a pledge to Thirteen/WNET and/or WLIW21. The concert is expected to be the largest single fundraising event in the history of public television.

Tickets to the final Police concert will be available in pairs to supporters of Thirteen and WLIW21 as thank-you gifts for contributions at various gift levels ($750, $500, $350, $150) on Saturday, June 14. The stations will celebrate The Police with a historical look at Sting, Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers, featuring classic concert footage and interviews. This will air simultaneously on Thirteen, WLIW21, and Thirteen HD, from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Later that same evening, WLIW21 will rebroadcast at 9 p.m.

A limited, once-in-a-lifetime experience including VIP access to the band's sound check for their final concert, dinner for two and a special souvenir gift is available at the $5,000 contribution level. There are also a limited number of V.I.P. Seats available at the $2,000 level that includes prime seating and a private pre- show reception. Ticketmaster will oversee ticket fulfillments, whether viewers pledge online or via phone, and in the spirit of the event, they will donate their service charge to the stations. Madison Square Garden is also pleased to donate a portion of their fees to benefit the invaluable and rich efforts of public television.

The Police, who kicked off their first American tour in 1978 at NYC's legendary CBGB's, have come full circle with the decision to perform the final show of their reunion tour in the City as a benefit for New York Public Television.

"We are honored to partner with public television and have a deep respect for their commitment to arts and culture," said The Police at a May 6th press conference with New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, where the band announced their own pledge to the city of $1 million towards the Mayor's MillionTrees initiative to plant 10,000 new trees and help reforest 2,000 acres of New York City.

The band's partnership with public television kicks off "Public Television Rocks!" -- a new campaign initiated by Thirteen and WLIW21 that will combine events and programming to expand public television's appeal to a wider audience and will become available to public television stations across the country for their own fundraising efforts.

"This historic concert event will benefit Thirteen and WLIW21 in general but, more specifically, enhance the arts and culture programming that these two stations provide to New York and America," says Neal Shapiro, President and CEO of the Educational Broadcasting Corporation, the licensee of Thirteen/WNET and WLIW21. "This is an exciting kick-off to the Public Television Rocks! campaign," which will help public television "engage with a new generation of audience and hopefully become a new model for future fundraising."

Beginning June 8th, Thirteen and WLIW21 launched a microsite for "Public Television Rocks!" at http://www.publictelevisionrocks.org with sneak-peek interview footage, webisodes and information about the August 7th final Police concert. The site will be accessible directly or through links at Thirteen.org and WLIW.org.

Oct 7, 2008: Celtic Thunder - New York City at Radio City Music Hall

The breakout hit of the March pledge season on public television stations across the country! Created by Sharon Browne, Celtic Thunder, a new group of exceptionally talented young male singers from Ireland and Scotland, performs an eclectic mix of songs, ranging from the traditional "Mountains of Mourne" and "Come By the Hills" to international hits such as "Brothers in Arms" and "Desperado," as well as original compositions by Celtic Thunder's musical director and composer Phil Coulter. The ensemble songs reflect the power of the soloists, who range in age from 14 to 40 and share a common Celtic heritage.

Celtic Thunder features the talents of five soloists: Damian Mc Ginty (age 14), Keith Harkin (age 21), Ryan Kelly (age 28), Paul Byrom (age 29) and George Donaldson (age 40), and is a mix of traditional Irish and pop classics with amazing ensemble pieces where the five very different voices come together.
