Dec 1, 2009: Pianist Angela Hewitt in concert at Herbst Theater

San Francisco Performances brings back celebrated pianist Angela Hewitt for a recital featuring Bach's Partita No. 2 in C minor and Partita No. 1, in B-flat Major as well as Schumann's Davidsbundlertanze,Opus 6 and Sonata in G minor, Opus 22.

Known for her magnetic musicianship and precise technique, Hewitt is a renowned Bach specialist. Completed in 2005, her 11-year project to record all the composer's major keyboard works has been described as "one of the record glories of our age" (The Sunday Times) and she has been hailed as "the pre-eminent Bach pianist of our time" (The Guardian).

Her recordings of Bach's complete solo keyboard concertos with the Australian Chamber Orchestra made the Billboard charts in the United States, and were named Record of the Month in Gramophone magazine. The first of a series of CDs featuring the music of Schumann was released in November 2007. Beyond that, Hewitt's vast discography includes CDs of works by Granados, Beethoven, Rameau, Chabrier, Messiaen, Ravel, Chopin, and others.

In July 2005, Hewitt launched her own Trasimeno Music Festival in the heart of Umbria in Italy. Now an annual event, it offers seven concerts over seven days featuring Hewitt as a recitalist, chamber musician, song accompanist and conductor, working with both established and young artists of her choosing.

Born into a musical family (her father was the cathedral organist in Ottawa, Canada). Hewitt began her piano studies at age three and during her formative years also studied violin, recorder and classical ballet. At nine she gave her first recital at Toronto's Royal Conservatory of Music where she later studied. She then went on to study with French pianist Jean-Paul Sevilla at the University of Ottawa.

Named Gramophone Artist of the Year in 2006, Hewitt was awarded the first ever BBC Radio 3 Listener's Award (Royal Philharmonic Society Awards) in 2003. She has lived in London since 1985 but also has homes in Ottawa and Umbria.
Triskela Celtic Harp Trio -- Diana Stork, Shawna Spiteri, Portia Diwa -- will perform an uplifting concert of Celtic, holiday, and spiritual music to warm the heart. The concert's location is the extraordinary space of St. Stephen's Church, known for its superb acoustics. For over 12 years, Triskela has performed healing music in sacred spaces, including Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, St. Mary Magdalene Church in Berkeley, and at the Chapel of Remembrance for the Memory Walk on Treasure Island. Come lend your spirit to this special holiday gathering!

Nov 23, 2009: Symphony Orchestra of the Kurmangazy Kazakh National Conservatory at Carnegie Hall

The Symphony Orchestra of the Kurmangazy Kazakh National Conservatory and the Kazakh traditional music ensemble Turan make their North American debut November 2009.

The North American debut of Turan and the Symphony Orchestra showcases two facets of Kazakhstan's rich musical culture: the ancient instrumental and vocal folk traditions of its historically nomadic people, and the European tradition of classical music introduced to the country through Russian influence.

Under the direction of two rising star conductors, French conductor Christophe Mangou and Kazakh conductor Kanat Omarov, the program begins with the Symphony Orchestra performing Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet-Overture Fantasy, followed by Sergei Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2, featuring celebrated Kazakh pianist Jania Aubakirova as soloist.

Kazakh traditional music ensemble Turan takes the stage to perform a traditional composition, titled Kerogly, in addition to traditional songs. Founded in 2008 by a group of students from the Kurmangazy Kazakh National Conservatory, the members of Turan are award-winning folk artists who have performed around the world. Turan performs on ancient Kazakh instruments, including the lute-like zhetygen, sherter, and dombra (all plucked); the kyl kobyz ("the most ancient bowed instrument on earth"); the flute-like sybyzgy and saz syrnay; together with a host of percussive instruments, mouth harps, and throat singing.

The program continues with the world premiere of Jamilya, a symphonic poem for Turan as soloists with orchestra, by award-winning contemporary Kazakh composer Aktoty Raimkulova. The program concludes with the William Tell Overture, the famous finale from Gioacchino Rossini's last opera and Leonard Bernstein's Overture to Candide.

Nov 20, 2009: Festive Works by Masters of the Baroque at Campbell United Methodist Church

Bay Choral Guild opens its 31st season with a delightful concert of Baroque Masterworks. BCG sang Handel's Dixit Dominus in its first season, 1988-89. Thirty-one years later, the group reprises this lively piece, a favorite with choirs and audiences worldwide. Next on the program, in celebration of the feast day (November 22) of the patron saint of music, is the renowned but too seldom performed Messa di Santa Cecilia of Alessandro Scarlatti. The concert finishes with the luminous Beatus vir, a superb and dramatic setting of Psalm 112 by Claudio Monteverdi. Sanford Dole, BCG Artistic Director, directs the BCG chorus, the Jubilate Orchestra, David Wilson concertmaster, and three outstanding soloists - soprano Ann Moss, and mezzos Elspeth Franks, and Sonia Gariaeff. All three highly regarded singers enjoy active careers both locally and nationwide in chamber music, opera, oratorio and recital performance. Join Maestro Dole and the Bay Choral Guild for a joyful and festive concert!

Nov 21, 2009: Festive Works by Masters of the Baroque at St. Gregory of Nyssen Episcopal Church

Nov 11, 2009: supperclub and dusty dutch presents... at SupperClub

November 11th, is "st martins" day, a celebration of light and in honor of the saint st martin, who cut his jacket in half with his sword to donate it to a homeless man shivering in the cold. Like Halloween, the children in Holland go out on this night with homemade lanterns and sing at their neighbors doors and receive candies and alike as reward. At supperclub, infamous of doing things slightly different, we like to continue this tradition and celebrate this Dutch Halloween night. Instead of candy we give you a shot of Lotus Vodka. Lotus Vodka donates a part of its revenue to a good cause.

It will be a dinner celebration existing of a 3 course set menu ($35), an after party (free), an art exhibition by Debi Tonge, Karaoke, candies, performances and more...

For dinner reservations please call 415 348 0900 or email roxy@supperclub.com

Nov 22, 2009: 10th Annual San Francisco World Music Festival at Jewish Community Center of San Francisco

Door Dog Music Productions presents the SAN FRANCISCO WORLD MUSIC FESTIVAL bringing master musicians from different parts of the globe to the Bay Area for special concerts, workshops and more. This Fall in San Francisco, we will celebrate the Tenth Annual San Francisco World Music Festival in November 13-22, 2009, with an exciting gathering of some of the most interesting musicians in the world.

This year's commissioned work, which will premiere on November 22, 7PM, at the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco, is the "International Youth Music Initiative", which started last year after receiving a generous grant from the Sam Mazza Foundation, and since has traveled across the globe to unite the youth of the world through music. This initiative brings together youth from all over the Bay Area, 12-18 years of age, combining a diverse range of our world's musical traditions and cultures, from the ragas of North India to the choral music of Eastern Europe. In addition to investing in the youth of the Bay Area, the initiative has also traveled to the mountains of Nepal, rural Taiwan, and the mountains of Kyrgyzstan to pass on to underprivileged youth their traditional music. Within the next couple years, students from these regions will join the group performing in the Bay Area.

This dialogue between 100 youth and 12 masters from 4 countries, having diverse global perspectives, is an effort to promote and preserve ethnic music here in the Bay Area, as well as, to provide youth from oppressed or endangered cultures of the world a voice to express themselves through their traditional music. It is an effort to challenge and inspire our next generation to learn about the global issues facing their peers in their own communities and of those around the world.

Other Festival events include a Film Night on 11/13, 7pm; Songs of Kyrgyzstan on 11/15, 7pm; Festival Assembly Program on 11/16, 3pm; Tablas and more Tablas on 11/19, 8pm.

Nov 15, 2009: The Sippy Cups in The Time Machine at Bimbo's 365

Continuing their national Time Machine 2009 Tour, The Sippy Cups return to historic and glamourous San Francisco nightclub Bimbo's 365, with two shows at 1:00 and 4:00 pm on Sunday, November 15th. Also featuring opening act Frances England.
The latest show from national kid-rock sensation The Sippy Cups features original material from their third full-length CD, as well as a selection of recast cult classics from the likes of The Beatles and The Ramones. Songs like "My Loose Tooth", "One Day Soon" and "Seven is the New 14" will delight children of all ages. "Seven" was the first Children's Music Discovery Download in history on the iTunes Music Store, received 90,000 downloads in one week, and shot to #1 on XM/Sirius Kids Place Live this past summer.
The Sippy Cups' famously rollicking stage-show keeps kids enthralled with a carnival of juggling, unicycling, comical characters and special effects. Above the giant balloons and pogo-dancing pre-schoolers, show stopper Anna Robertson returns to The Sippy Stage on her aerial silks and spinning aerial hoop. The Sippy Cups have astounded family audiences from coast to coast in one of the most exciting live shows on the scene.

"The Sippy Cups' brand of cosmic rock & roll has to be seen to be believed. The Time Machine is good, but you absolutely have to experience The Sippy Cups live..." About.com Guide to Children's Music

"This innovative San Francisco band doesn't just play rock and roll, it plays WITH rock and roll, adding mischievous layers to a classic punk-funk sound." Cookie Magazine

Nov 13, 2009: Opening Concert: Night at the Opera at Paramount Theater

Oakland East Bay Symphony today announced the addition of soloists to their opening concert of the season on Friday, November 13 at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland. Joining previously announced soprano Hope Briggs and tenor Kalil Wilson are soprano Heidi Moss, mezzo-soprano Lori Willis, tenor AJ Glueckert, baritone Zachary Gordin, baritone Brian Leerhuber, and bass-baritone Joshua Bloom. Music Director Michael Morgan will conduct the concert, with Assistant Conductor Bryan Nies taking the podium for "Siegfried's Funeral Music" by Wagner.

Morgan says "It is a great pleasure to open the season with this array of singers, from Hope Briggs and Brian Leerhuber with whom I'm worked many times, to Joshua Bloom whom I'll be working with for the first time. The talent that lives in the Bay Area makes it very easy to make a world class evening using local talent. I am also happy to show off both my orchestra and my assistant conductor Bryan Nies."

A Night at the Opera celebrates the season's opening with musical highlights from some of the world's grandest operas, and brings together the OEBS, Oakland Symphony Chorus, under the direction of Lynne Morrow, and Oakland-East Bay Gay Men's Chorus under the direction of Michael Robert Patch.

The opening night program includes well-known orchestral and vocal selections from well-loved operas including Giuseppe Verdi's Aida (1871), La Forza del Destino (1862), and Nabucco (1842); Lucia di Lammermoor by Gaetano Donizetti (1835); Cavalleria Rusticana by Pietro Mascagni (1890), The Ring Cycle by Richard Wagner (1869-1874), Herodiade by Jules Massenet (1881) and Candide by Leonard Berntstein (1956).

Dec 3, 2009: A cappella group Anonymous 4 in concert at Herbst Theater

Renowned for their unearthly vocal blend and virtuosic ensemble singing, a cappella quartet Anonymous 4 returns to San Francisco Performances with a holiday-themed concert. The program, entitled "The Cherry Tree," features medieval English carols and American Christmas songs.

The award-winning group - Ruth Cunningham, Susan Hellauer, Marsha Genensky and Jacqueline Horner-Kwiatek - create a magically ethereal sound through a combination of historical scholarship and contemporary performance intuition.

Founded in 1986, Anonymous 4 has performed on major concert series and at festivals throughout the world to support their 18 recordings of medieval, contemporary and American music. The group's CDs have sold nearly two million copies on the harmonia mundi label; the most recent is "Four Centuries of Chant," just released this fall.

The quartet's members bring a wealth of remarkable experience to their craft. As a sound healing practitioner, Ruth Cunningham works with individuals and groups on using the voice and music as tools for healing and transformation. California native Marsha Genensky has taught and done research at Stanford University and is the ensemble's American music historian. The group's medieval music research expert, Susan Hellauer, leads Chant Camp workshops throughout the United States. Irish-born Jacqueline Horner-Kwiatek is a longtime professional singer comfortable with a wide range of genres, from baroque to classical opera to new music.

Anonymous 4's 2004 release, "American Angels" (18th to 20th century folk psalmody, hymnody and gospel songs), spent 76 weeks on Billboard's Top Classical Chart. Their 2005 release, "The Origin of Fire" (sequel to their 1997 bestseller "11,000 Virgins, music of Hildegard of Bingen") was named in Amazon.com's Top 25 Classical CDs for 2005. For two consecutive years (2004 and 2005), the quartet was voted one of Billboard's Top Classical Artists of the Year.

Nov 14, 2009: Teresa Tudury at the San Geronimo Valley Community Center! at San Geronimo Valley Community Center

"Picture a cross between Bette Midler and Bonnie Raitt musically, and toss in the most side-splitting stage patter imaginable, and you have Ms. Tudury."
-Johnny Angel, LA Weekly

Tudury is taking risks all over the place, with none of the stiff and predictable inhibitions of a too-established performer...What we're talking about here, folks, is a star in the making."
-Don Heckman, Los Angeles Times

Ever since Teresa made a surprise appearance ahead of Swami Beyondananda's last show here people have been clamoring for her return....don't miss this very special show and please stay tuned on our website and email list for developments on this show -- Hannah

TERESA TUDURY started writing songs at age 12 and was performing in San Francisco nightclubs by the time she was 15. She has played on and off in the Bay Area for years, and for almost two decades was based in Los Angeles where in addition to music gigs, she wrote comedy and worked as a character actress on stage and screen.

With a deep, sultry voice that magnetizes audiences, and a scathing comedic wit to match, Teresa is a consummate performer who pours out her original songs with power, verve, passion, and disarming humor. Her vocal stylings are perfectly complemented by her bluesy guitar playing.

Throughout her career, Teresa has recorded or performed with such greats as Leonard Cohen, Rickie Lee Jones, Lyle Lovett, Taj Mahal, Leo Kottke and Bonnie Bramlett. She recently rereleased her 1992 self-titled solo album, Teresa Tudury, and her 2002 CD, River Of Life. Currently recording a CD of new material for release in 2009, and with a steady stream of concerts coming up, Teresa is a gifted artist in her prime.
