Jul 23, 2008: The Future of the Web is the Future of Our Data: Introducing Data Portability at DLA Piper

Just over six months from its official start, the DataPortability Project has advanced the conversation about user data rights. The project's volunteers have worked together to create the DataPortability Reference Design to document the best practices for integrating existing open standards and protocols for maximum interoperability. This should allow users to access their friends and media across all the applications, social networking sites and widgets that implement the design into their systems.
The formation of the project has put the question of portability into the spotlight. While all of us on the Internet are users, including our own industry, this panel will address the user as someone out there beyond technology specialties and Silicon Valley. There's been significant work done in the past year to help outline the issues in and around data portability, from open ID, to privacy, to ownership. We'd like to use our time to come at this from what users want as well as what the industry thinks is needed.
