The JiMiller Band's style is as varied as their influences. The band is best known for its freeform improvisation rock that was made famous by The Grateful Dead and Allman Brothers.

Lead man Jim Miller has been playing music for most of his life and was the former frontman of the band Oroboros, orchestrating their 18-year odyssey on the road, playing at the 1994 H.O.R.D.E. Festival, the 1996 Further Festival, and sharing the stage and jamming with Blues Traveler, Sheryl Crow, The Allman Brothers, Hot Tuna and the legendary John Cipollina of Quicksilver Messenger Service. When this phenomenon 'from the islands' (Vancouver Island and Newfoundland) reached the mainland she steered a path clear of what Joni Mitchell knowingly calls the record business' "style inventions". With Ani DiFranco as a model of integrity, and Creative Commons licensing changing the "game" for resourceful musicians, Crowe created her own label. Lena Birtwistle open this Tidings concert with a distinctive set of folk/pop songs tinged with country hues. The singer/songwriter, for whom Ladysmith is home, has been sharing her music and quirky sense of humour all over the Island for the last four years. Citing such inspirations as Eva Cassidy, Fleetwood Mac, The Dixie Chicks, Steve Poltz, and Barenaked Ladies, her songs and stories are blended with a touch that’s very much her own. Alongside a focus on her solo career, Lena Birtwistle has recently teamed up with musician Sid Johnson, (Holly McNarland, Kinnie Starr), to form "The Adamantines". The duo, more rock/roots based, is working hard on songwriting, recording, and promoting the release of their debut EP, "Empires" (created with Zak Cohen at the Woodshop Recording Studio just north of Duncan).

Uzizi is an alternative rock band with a 12-member choir. Directed by Craig Matis, Uzizi has performed in North America and abroad in several permutations since 1980's. The current crop of compositions is strongly influenced by the melodies and harmonies of mid-19th century Sacred Harp music. Also known as 'shape-note singing', Sacred Harp is a living tradition whose music can be directly traced to the 'country parish music' of early 18th century England.

Craig's affection for this unique musical style allows him to bend the pioneer religious aesthetic to his own purposes. At turns religous, anti-religious, and non-religious, the threads of continuity are the joy of singing, the power of primitive harmonic forces and beautiful poetry. Besides the choir, Uzizi is a 5-piece ensemble; fiddler, lead vocals/guitar, lead guitar, bass and drums. Uzizi's newest CD, "Loss and Wonder", features 12 new songs which are performed on the current tour.

British singer / guitarist Joanne Shaw Taylor was 16 years old when she was discovered by Dave Stewart of The Eurythmics. Stewart was so impressed with Taylor’s guitar playing that he invited the youngster to join his supergroup, D.U.P. (Da Univerzal Playaz) on a European tour in 2002.

Listening to her breathtaking Ruf Records debut album, White Sugar, it’s safe to say that Joanne is well on the way to succeeding. Vocally, she has a strong, husky style, sort of understated, and somewhat reminiscent of Joss Stone with its soulfulness at times.
