Aug 2, 2008: Tour de Fat - Seattle at Gas Works Park

New Belgium Tour de Fat
Seattle

Follow your folly and get ready for another day of antics, costumes, and the most fun you will have on two wheels! Tour de Fat is returning to Seattle on Saturday, August 2. This year the venue is Gasworks Park. As usual, the event encourages outrageously dressed bicyclists and bikes to take part in the morning parade. This year the planned ride is west towards Golden Gardens on the Burke-Gilman Trail.

Organized by New Belgium Brewing, Tour de Fat is a celebration of cycling, good times and the importance of a hearty laugh. The event includes costumes, parade, music, beer garden and some truly unusual bikes. Proceeds from Tour de Fat support the Bicycle Alliance of Washington and other non-profit cycling groups.

Highlights of Tour de Fat:

* One volunteer in each city will commit to live car-free for one year as part of the Car-for-Bike Trade Program. The dedicated individual will sign over their car title and receive a hand-built New Belgium commuter bike in exchange. The selected candidate will chronicle the trials and triumphs along their car-free journey. The volunteer is chosen after submitting a video or essay describing their desire to live car-free.
* At the Team Wonderlounge, participants can join Team Wonderbike, New Belgium's bicycling commuter advocacy program. Team Wonderbikers pledge to commute by bike, not car, as often as possible. Currently, more than 11,000 people have pledged not to drive 9 million miles in the next twelve months. To check out the Team Wonderbike blog.
* Tour de Fat 2008 has a new revival stage for performers with 100% solar-powered sound and decorations made from recycled materials. The stage will be transported in solar-powered trailers and the Tour de Fat crew will travel on B100 biodiesel fuel.
* Festival-goers can participate in the pre-event bicycle parade and try out new rideable art bikes.
* This is a pro-bike celebration, not an anti-car rally…non-cyclists are more than welcome to join the festivities.

Tour de Fat Schedule of Festivities:
9:00 a.m. Bike Parade Registration
10:00 a.m. Bike Parade
As part of Tour de Fat's Car-for-Bike Trade program, one volunteer will commit to live car-free for one year. The dedicated individual will sign over their car title and receive a hand-built New Belgium commuter bike in exchange. The selected candidate will chronicle the trials and triumphs along their car-free journey. The volunteer is chosen after submitting a video or essay describing their desire to live car-free. For more information, log onto www.followyourfolly.com. See the 2008 car-for-bike trade in Chicago and for last year's swap in Seattle go to www.followyourfolly.com and then click on videos.

BAW needs volunteers to make this event a success. There's beer to serve (must be 21) and tickets to take and other tasks. Please send an email to k-kcushman@comcast.net (subject line: Tour de Fat) if you'd like to help out.

Sep 19, 2008: National Park(ing) Day - Seattle at seattle center

Park(ing) Day

Trust for Public Land offices in San Francisco is promoting a National Park(ing) Day. September 19th is National Park(ing) Day, an annual celebration of parks in cities by creating temporary parks in public parking spaces. National Park(ing) Day is an all-volunteer event, and any participation is welcome. One can, build his or her own park, help others build parks, or simply visit Park(ing) Day parks throughout the day. Look at www.tpl.org/parkingday for details, a how-to manual, photos and videos. Park(ing) Day is a very creative opportunity to emphasize the continued necessity of parks and open space in our cities.

Aug 1, 2008: Seattle Lunch 2.0 @ Whitepages.com at whitepages.com

Seattle Lunch 2.0 @ Whitepages.com will be great!! We had Cardomain host a lunch last year and Snapvine (newly acquired by whitepages) co-sponsor last year as well. Now we get to check out Whitepages.com itself and hear from a panel of local companies who have built iPhone apps recently. So far we have confirmed Whitepages.com, Urbanspoon, and Jott for the panel. Michael Arrington will be moderating the panel and of course be around to answer other questions.

There will of course be some prizes and giveaways... the usual great company... and yummy food!!

Sep 4, 2008: Vienna Teng (duo show with Alex Wong) w/Haale at The Triple Door

Vienna Teng, with thirteen years of classical training under her belt, brings a very personal, unique perspective to the singer-songwriter idiom. Her music tends to the intimate and introspective, but along with influences such as Paul Simon, Sarah McLachlan and Tori Amos, her style gains character from diverse inspirations like vintage bebop jazz, late 19th century classical and Radiohead. Pressed for a description of her music, she says: "It's somewhere between folk music and pop music. Maybe chamber folk, since it involves classical instruments at times."

In Teng's appearance here last year, The Triple Door's intimate Mainstage proved to be the perfect venue for her: Steinway D piano, superb sound to capture every nuance, elegant lighting to heighten atmosphere, all in service to a young artist with an ever-deepening story to tell.

Aug 9, 2008: Queen City Cruise: Project Gangplank at Pier 55 (Argosy Cruises, Seattle)

Nearly 500 adventurers get this chance each year to experience a "Naughycal Adventure on the High Seas. Queen City Cruise features sun, music, dancing, scenery, and _men_. It tours Seattle's harbor and inland passages on an extravagantly decorated boat.

Tickets are $50 and available only online at www.ttca.org

A 27-year Seattle tradition, the Queen City Cruise is an Unforgettable Naughtycal Adventure on the High Seas and a deliciously deviant contribution to Seafair, Seattle's water sports extravaganza.

There's something for everyone on board: soaking in the sights and sun on the front bow, shaking the booty to really great dance music, drinking cool libations served by fun-loving bartenders, and sampling fine edibles at the bountiful buffet.

And if all that isn't tempting enough, there will be contests and prizes – including the coveted traditional award for "Coming the Greatest Distance." Dress up or dress down your student body and compete in the costume contests for fabulous prizes.

The Cruise this year has been dubbed Project Gangplank. Rest assured there will be an abundance of fiercely fashionable pirates both onboard and around time in the weeks leading up to the Cruise.

Queen City Cruise is produced by Tacky Tourist Clubs of America as a benefit for Gay City Health Project, Gay World Series Organizing Committee and the Backpack Project (via Action Northwest).
