Jul 21, 2009: SDForum Quarterly Venture Breakfast with Pillsbury Winthrop at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP

We're excited to deliver, with Pillsbury Winthrop, the third annual Quarterly Venture Breakfast Series. Our July session will be focusing on 'The Current State of the CleanTech Bubble'.

After rising to #2 in 2008 in the PwC Money Tree, cleantech investing plummeted 75% in Q1'09 to #4 in the industry rankings, after Software, Biotech, and Med Devices. Many of the cleantech deals that required over $50M in venture financing and hundreds of millions in project finance are either dead or pursuing new strategies that are more capital efficient and require less debt. Scores of companies are applying for government funds to supplement their equity base. Come listen to and quiz our panel of experts to see if the cleantech bubble has burst or if this is simply the pause that refreshes the industry.

Agenda:

8:00am-8:30am Registration and Breakfast
8:30am-8:45am Introductions
8:45am-9:00am Overview
9:00am-9:45am Panel Discussion

Steve Bengston, Pricewaterhouse Coopers
Matt Garratt, Battery Ventures
Mamoom Hamid, USVP
Allison Leopold Tilley, Pillsbury Winthrop
Dan Rubin, Alloy Ventures
Robert Walker, Sierra Ventures
Don Wood, Draper Fisher Jurvetson

9:45am-10:00am Question and Answer

$20/SDForum Members, $30/non-members, $0/Platinum Pass.

Jul 13, 2009: What Every Startup Needs to Know about Public Relations at Four Points by Sheraton

To generate sales, you have to make yourself known; that's why every startup needs PR. Good PR helps you communicate the need for your product or service, differentiate you from your competitors and build your relationships with the press, bloggers, and analysts who will get the word out about your company. Although today startups may wonder if they should spend money on PR, without it your campaign may fizzle, not sizzle.

Jeannette Bitz-a seasoned PR executive with more than twelve years experience developing successful PR strategies for technology companies-will discuss the value of communicating with the most important media, reporters and influencers in your market prior to your launch. She'll also take a look at the changing media landscape and how it's affecting PR today. Business and industry trade publications are cutting back and closing. Industry bloggers are gaining in importance. Social media-Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and even YouTube-have become key communications tools for the media and PR professionals.

Who should attend: This session is designed for start-up companies preparing to launch their product or company into the market. Since top-level executives are often involved in such launches, company presidents as well as vice presidents and directors of marketing will find the presentation of interest.

Jul 17, 2009: Bootstrappers Breakfast at Boudin Bakery - Embarcadero 4

Join Other Entrepreneurs Who Eat Problems For Breakfast.
Bootstrapper's Breakfasts are for founders of early stage technology startups. It is a chance to compare notes on operational, development, and business issues with peers. These breakfasts were designed for entrepreneurs to share ideas and leverage thoughts with other folks who are serious about growing their business.

At Bootstrapper's Breakfast we have serious conversations about growing a business based on internal cashflow. This is not for entrepreneurs who want to meet VCs, this is for founders who are actively bootstrapping a startup. We meet in the back room at several Silicon Valley restaurants so space is limited.

These breakfasts are facilitated by SKMurphy, Inc. as a service to the Silicon Valley bootstrapper community, so there is no sales pitch from us or anyone else who attends. The first breakfast was held at Coco's in the heart of Silicon Valley in 2005. Since that time, they have grown to multiple locations through out the Bay Area.

Cost of breakfast + tip.

Jul 16, 2009: Using Virtual Reality for Stakeholder Engmt for Env Mgmt at Online, in Second Life

Thursday, July 16, 2009, 11am-5pm Eastern

Presented by PublicDecisions, Co-sponsored by Learning Times, NY University Law School/Institute for Information Law and Policy, Public Agenda, Involve and National Issues Forum Institute

Don't Just Tell Them, Show Them
Why just talk with stakeholders about environmental management (or any other subject)? Let them experience it!

Conducted entirely in the virtual world Second Life, this one-day conference will provide you with the opportunity to experience and learn about the possibilities of hosting stakeholder learning events using virtual reality.

You'll participate in presentations (including a virtual deliberation held in Second Life), discussions . . . even "field trips" that demonstrate how virtual reality is being used for stakeholder learning today.

Field trips include
1) Tufts University (3D planning for Acton, Massachusetts that actually can be manipulated "in world" by participants in Second Life);
2) Centre for Water Studies (uses Second Life to showcase six water habitats that participants can interact with in world);
3) EcoCommons (provides an in-world network for environmentally-focused nonprofits, such as the Sierra Club and the Mountain Lion Foundation, for promoting awareness, community-building and environmental education) and
4) Virtual Native Lands (an island that uses Second Life for engaging people around the world in discussions about environmental issues affecting tribal nations around the world)

What You'll Learn:
► The benefits and drawbacks of working with stakeholders in Second Life, including when it's appropriate, efficient and effective—and when it's not
► How Second Life differs from other technologies used for stakeholder engagement
► How Second Life can be used for a range of subject areas, including—but not limited to—environmental management
► Tips for using Second Life effectively, including how to access existing "islands" or spaces within Second Life's virtual world and how to create your own space

View the conference agenda at http://www.publicdecisions.com/mini_conferences_3.html

Jul 21, 2009: Navigation and the Connected Vehicle at Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP

Unexploited Location-Centric Opportunities or Commodities?

Vehicle navigation solutions used to be exclusive, expensive options in premium car brands. Over the last five years navigation solutions have matured and are now being offered in a variety of device platforms.

Are we experiencing a full commoditization or are there new unexploited opportunities for consumers and the connected car?
What are these opportunities, who will be able to benefit from them and what can consumers and businesses expect?
How can companies continue to offer successful navigation offerings or are in-car navigation solutions and PNDs facing the same fate as PDAs ten years ago?
Are connected PND offerings and the connected car a viable, long-term strategy? If so, how will companies address recurring cost requirements and identify the right content mix?
What is the next leap for navigation and connected vehicle solutions in a location-based context (i.e. advertising) and who will lead in the emerging value-chains?

Join the panel discussion with industry representatives, moderated by Thilo Koslowski, Vice President Automotive and Vehicle ICT, Gartner Inc.

Complimentary appetizers, beer, wine and soft drinks will be served.

$20 members, $40 non-members (Pre-registration online), $50 at the.
