The working conference will present current research into and industrial experiences with usability as a way of connecting empirical work analysis and interaction design, with a special focus on contexts in India. Cultural usability is a comprehensive concept which adheres to all kinds of contexts in which humans are involved (private family, work, public and private organizations, nature and climate, technological, etc.).

The purpose of the working conference is to enable practitioners and researchers to analyze the concept of usability and how it can be used to connect empirical work analyses and interaction designs in different contexts. The working conference presentations and discussions will be published in a book in the Springer IFIP series.

Why just talk with stakeholders about environmental management (or any other subject)? Let them experience it!

Conducted entirely in the virtual world Second Life, this one-day conference will provide you with the opportunity to experience and learn about the possibilities of hosting stakeholder learning events using virtual reality.

You'll participate in presentations (including a virtual deliberation held in Second Life), discussions . . . even "field trips" that demonstrate how virtual reality is being used for stakeholder learning today.

Field trips include
1) Tufts University (3D planning for Acton, Massachusetts that actually can be manipulated "in world" by participants in Second Life);
2) Centre for Water Studies (uses Second Life to showcase six water habitats that participants can interact with in world);
3) EcoCommons (provides an in-world network for environmentally-focused nonprofits, such as the Sierra Club and the Mountain Lion Foundation, for promoting awareness, community-building and environmental education) and
4) Virtual Native Lands (an island that uses Second Life for engaging people around the world in discussions about environmental issues affecting tribal nations around the world)

What You'll Learn:
► The benefits and drawbacks of working with stakeholders in Second Life, including when it's appropriate, efficient and effective—and when it's not
► How Second Life differs from other technologies used for stakeholder engagement
► How Second Life can be used for a range of subject areas, including—but not limited to—environmental management
► Tips for using Second Life effectively, including how to access existing "islands" or spaces within Second Life's virtual world and how to create your own space
