Aug 7, 2008: Cloud computing - how safe is your corporate data? at Samovar Conference Hall

For more info: ceo@ict-eu.com

At a recent gathering of over 70 security professionals, the subject of cloud computing and the issues that it raises regarding the security of our networks was discussed. The forum interactively identified numerous issues that must be addressed within the enterprise to ensure that proprietary, personal and private information is protected when using cloud computing technology. The talk described different types of cloud computing solutions and how they allow information to leak from the enterprise. Other cloud computing issues covered were data ownership, legal liability, verification and validation, virtualization, and e-discovery implications. This talk will describe the results of that collaboration and will provide insight into how security professionals are addressing cloud computing in the enterprise. For example, if your organization is using cloud computing services is your present security model going to have to change?

Speaker: Mark S. Kadrich - CISSP - The Security Consortium, Inc

For the past 20 year Mark Kadrich has been a contributing member of the security community. His strengths are in systems level design, policy generation, end point security, and risk management. Mr. Kadrich is presently President and CEO of The Security Consortium, whose mission is to provide security testing, research, counsel, and leadership to their customers. Prior to TSC, Mr. Kadrich was Senior Manager of Network and Endpoint Security for Symantec. His role was to ensure that the Symantec business units correctly interpreted security policy during their pursuit of innovative technology solutions. Mr. Kadrich was senior scientist with Sygate Technologies prior to the Symantec acquisition. Mr. Kadrich joined Sygate through the acquisition of a start-up company where he was a founding member.

Aug 21, 2008: SKMurphy: Getting More Customers at Plug and Play Real Estate

We will cover a variety of proven marketing techniques for growing your business: attendees will select two or three that fit their style and develop a plan to implement them in their business in the next 90 days. As a part of your workshop, you will leave with an one-page action plan and we will follow up to help you track your progress. These proven techniques are divided into a couple broad strategies:

* What other people say about you: referrals, indirect, or joint sales.
* What you say: speaking engagements, particularly in community of practice groups (professional groups, users groups) are ways of reaching customers.
* What you write: blogs, articles, newsletters are all proven methods for getting your message across and reaching your customers.
* Getting found when prospects are looking: advertising and making your site easily found on search engines are two ways to do this.

This workshop has consistently enjoyed very positive feedback and the last couple have sold out so register early.

About the Workshop Leader
Sean Murphy has taken an entrepreneurial approach to life since he could drive. He has served as an advisor to dozens of startups, helping them explore new options and bring their businesses to new levels. His firm, SKMurphy, Inc., focuses on early customers and early revenue for software startups, helping engineers to understand business development.

Prior to SKMurphy, Sean worked in a variety of areas including software engineering, engineering management, application engineering, business development, product marketing and customer support. He has worked for Cisco Systems, 3Com, AMD, MMC Networks, Escalade and VLSI Technology. Sean holds a BS in Mathematical Sciences and an MS in Engineering-Economic Systems from Stanford University.

Agenda:

* 8:30 AM Workshop begins
* 12:30 PM Lunch & De-brief

Jul 30, 2008: Drupal Lab at Affinity Lab

We will be having the next Washington DC Drupal Lab on July 30th from 7 to 9pm. Like usual it is the last Wednesday of the month, and like usual it will be at Affinity Lab in Adams Morgan. The lab is located at 2451 18th St NW in Adams Morgan, and the entrance is to the right of The Diner.

Presentations will start promptly at 7:15pm, and all attendees are invited to talk about their latest work with Drupal, whether it is building simple sites or developing complicated modules. We are going to keep things very informal, and each presenter should talk for about 5 minutes, with time for discussion afterwards.

A projector and wi-fi will be provided, so feel free to bring your laptop so you can easily share things with the group. We have several different types of apple video connectors, but it might not hurt for you to bring your own if you have it so we don't have to fumble around too much.

Beer and soft drinks will be provided, though unlike some previous meetups there will be no food. Feel free to stop at one of the many restaurants in the area and bring you snack or dinner with you.

See you all next week! A big thanks to Mike for organizing this!

Aug 6, 2008: The Elevator Pitch Roundtable at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP

The VC Taskforce Elevator Pitch Roundtable is a great opportunity for entrepreneurs to network with investors and other CXOs, present their company and idea, and hear first-hand what it takes to raise early-stage capital in 2008. Each of our events has consistently drawn an excellent entrepreneur-to-investor ratio.

If you are an entrepreneur in a startup and currently seeking capital, come prepared with your best 60-second elevator pitch.

If you are an investor come and listen to entrepreneurs' pitches. You never know where you'll find your next deal. Find out how our panel of investors rate the entrepreneurs' pitches; which VCs pass and for what reasons; and, which entrepreneurs other VCs want to talk to ASAP. Please let us know if you would like to participate on one of our Elevator Pitch Roundtable panels or Workshop panels.

During the evening, a select number of entrepreneurs will present their pitch to the entire room. Our distinguished panel of early stage investors will ask questions and provide brief feedback. Please note that pitching time limits will be strictly enforced!

Our lively panel discussion and Q&A will also provide critical insight into what it takes to raise capital today.

Sep 4, 2008: LIFT Asia 08 at International Convention Center Jeju Island

LIFT Asia 08, a three-day event taking place in Korea on September 4, 5 and 6, will offer inspiring talks and activities to look into the future of our networked society.

The Internet is now part of our society, innovation goes incremental and the important Web breakthroughs are behind us (email, IM, social software, etc.). Pioneers are moving to new frontiers but what are the upcoming changes? Which domains will be soon influenced by technological developments? What will be the new relationships between upcoming technologies and sociability? How will different cultures react to this? LIFT Asia 08 will address these questions by looking at fields such as virtual money, new forms of social media, networked cities, digital nomadism and the new breeds of robots.

Jul 25, 2008: Manchester Girl Geek Dinner at University of Salford

I'm in the final phases of organising the second Manchester Girl Geek
Dinner. Sponsorship has now been found (thank you kindly to those who have helped) and registration should open soon.

When: 25th July 7pm
Where: Salford University, University House
Who can attend: Girl Geeks! A lady who has an interest, or is involved
in the Science, Engineering and Technology industries. Blokes can come
too, but you need an invite from a Geek Girl!

Cost: Around £15 (includes 3 course meal, coffee and drinks)

What:
For those who haven't been before, it's dinner, wine, talks from
inspirational women, networking and discussions afterwards.

Dress up as much as you like, for those of us who like to wear pretty
dresses (I am!), or if you're more comfortable in jeans that's fine
too.

Currently we have two talks planned, if you want to get involved and
speak about women in engineering, science and technology, please do
get in touch.

The talks:
Gemma Cameron - How to get young people interested in Geekery!

Rachael Hoyle - winner of the IET's Dyson Young Woman Apprentice of
Year Award. Rachael will be delivering an extremely interesting talk
around the stigma of women in engineering. This will cover how ethics
and equality are the dominant factors in employment, and whether this
is damaging the industry, rather than encouraging diversity.
