Jan 31, 2010: Mark Hummel's Blues Harmonica Blowout with James Cotton, Paul Oscher, Mojo Buford, Willie Smith & Johnny Dyer - A Muddy Harp Tribute at Yoshi's

The past decade has seen the emergence of young harmonica-led blues bands. In California, groups that draw their inspiration from the Chicago school but add elements of jump blues and rock 'n' roll into the mix have come up with an exciting new style of West Coast blues. In Oakland, the northern capital of California blues, resides the incredibly powerful harmonica player and vocalist Mark Hummel, leader of The Blues Survivors, who has been a major force in shaping and defining this musical genre.

Mark Hummel is a road warrior - a true Blues Survivor. Along the way, he has crafted his own trademark harmonica sound - a subtle combination of tone, phrasing and attack combined with a strong sense of swing. While Mark is new to Electro Fi Records, his earlier albums, constant touring and appearances at the major blues festivals have firmly established his solid reputation around the US and Europe.

Born in New Haven, Connecticut and raised in Los Angeles, California, Mark absorbed the music of such Chicago based harp blowers as Little Walter, James Cotton, and Sonny Boy Williamson, before settling in Berkeley, California in 1972. There he played with local bluesmen such as Cool Papa, Boogie Jake, Mississippi Johnny Waters and Sonny Lane. In 1980, he took the helm to lead the popular Blues Survivors Band.

Mark Hummel In 1985, the Blues Survivors released Playing in Your Town, on Rockinitus Records, and immediately went out on the road. Earning their name, they toured virtually non-stop throughout the United States, Canada and Europe often playing alongside such blues greats as Charlie Musselwhite, Brownie McGhee, Lowell Fulson and Eddie Taylor.

While on tour with his band in 1988, Mark was introduced to Canadian guitarist and vocalist Sue Foley. After several tours that year, Mark and Sue released Up & Jumpin', which also features piano legend Charles Brown. Eager to revive the Blues Survivors, though, Mark hit the road again in 1990, before releasing Hard Lovin' in 1992 on Double Trouble Records. He has been on the road constantly since then, stopping only to record Feel Like Rockin' in 1994 and Married to the Blues in 1995 on Flying Fish Records. He has performed at numerous festivals across the country, including the San Francisco Blues Festival, Chicago Blues Festival, King Biscuit Blues Festival, Waterfront Blues Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, and has performed and judged at the Hohner Harmonica World Championship, held in Germany.

For Heart of Chicago, Mark's sixth release and first on Tone-Cool, Mark traveled to the Windy City to record with some of the city's most legendary players and pay tribute to his Chicago blues influences. Featuring former Muddy Waters sidemen Willie "Big Eyes" Smith and Bob Stroger on drums and bass, guitarist Dave Myers from Little Walter's band, and others. In 1998 Mark released Lowdown To Uptown, his 7th cd, a mix of Chicago blues & uptown jazz. This cd featues great guests such as Jr. Watson, Mike Welch, Brenda Boykin & the last piano recording of the late, great Charles Brown. Mark's most current CD is called "Ain't Easy No More" on the Electro Fi label. A mixture of Hummel's originals and some choice rearrangements of previously recorded blues. It's receiving extended radio play at the moment.

Since 1991 Mark has been both producing & performing at his annual Blues Harmonica Blowout™ series. These shows have grown to be a much heralded event & continue to draw sellout crowds wherever they appear. The list of participents is a who's who of Blues harp history, James Cotton, Charlie Musselwhite, Norton Buffalo, Kim Wilson, Huey Lewis, Carey Bell, Billy Boy Arnold, Rod Piazza, Rick Estrin, Paul deLay, Snooky Pryor, James Harman, Gary Primich, Sam Myers, in just the last three years of this 11 year event.

Jan 28, 2010: Jacqui Naylor Quartet at Yoshi's

On the heels an often sold-out European and U.S. tour, vocalist and songwriter Jacqui Naylor returns to her native Bay Area for a concert of new music and requested favorites from her recordings. Half of the artist’s proceeds from this concert will benefit the San Francisco Domestic Violence Consortium, where Naylor has lent her voice in support for more than a decade.

“Jacqui Naylor is an incomparable triple threat, serving up classic covers with the best of them, delivering top-drawer originals and inspiring with the musical marriage she calls acoustic smashing," wrote JazzTimes. “The words and melody are Gershwin’s ‘Summertime’ but the groove is Allman’s ‘Whipping Post.’ Naylor has the chops and sensitivity to pull it off,” adds The New York Times. “Her whisky-tinged voice can bring to mind a mid-career Peggy Lee,” sounds the Seattle Times.

Naylor recently released her seventh recording, You Don’t Know Jacq (Ruby Star/Warner), and tours nationally and internationally, including acclaimed debuts this year at Ronnie Scotts in London, Blue Note in New York, Milan and Tokyo, and Women In Jazz Festival in Germany. The Wall Street Journal claims "The Color Five and Smashed For The Holidays mark a turning point in Naylor’s career.” Indeed, her holiday recording placed in the top 10 for the season in USA Today, Jazziz Magazine and The Washington Post.

Naylor’s current release has already garnered much fame, with “Rise Up” featured on the Obama/Biden Website and “Celebrate Early & Often” standard” by the media, including Martha Stewart Weddings. “Part jazz chanteuse and part folk-pop-leaning singer/songwriter, she enjoys nothing more than mixing things up. She could easily get by performing only her own material, but her covers and standards are so appealingly original in their execution that her albums wouldn't be the same without them,” writes All Music Guide.

“You Don’t Know Jacq showcases Naylor’s vocal ability and her talent for telling a story. No matter what musical context she puts herself in—jazz, pop or rock—she will turn it into a captivating narrative,” adds All About Jazz

Naylor’s show at Yoshi’s will include requests from her recordings as well as brand new originals and breathtaking standards. To hear songs, see video and make a song request, visit www.jacquinaylor.com.

Jan 27, 2010: On Another Note: Van Hunt Live - A Solo Performance at Yoshi's

Van Hunt was born in Dayton, Ohio. When asked about Dayton, he comments, “There’s something in the southern soil of Ohio that creates an atmosphere and forms its people. I come from a place that is so pretty, yet in some ways is so destructive. You can feel all that in my music.”

Van remembers his relationship with music beginning as early as age eight. He discovered Prince two years later when his father introduced him to Prince’s self-titled album. “Prince connected the dots between the music in my head and the idea of pursuing a career in music,” Van recalls. By 16, Van was performing in nightclubs.

Van’s career in the industry spans over 20 years and includes writing and co-producing the hit song Hopeless, which appeared on the Love Jones soundtrack; a 2005 Grammy nomination for Best Urban/Alternative Performance for his song Dust; and a 2007 Grammy award for Best R&B Performance by Duo or Group (along with John Legend and Joss Stone) for a cover of Family Affair by Sly Stone.

His influences range from Thelonius Monk, Sly Stone and Prince, to Bach and Franz Liszt. A diverse collection of his masterful compositions displays the skill, originality, and integrity for which Van’s music has become known. He has released two albums, including his first, Van Hunt, and a second offering, On the Jungle Floor. Due to changes in the music industry, Van’s third album, Popular, has never been officially released. The digital release of Van’s first independent offering, Use In Case of Emergency (rare items from the vault), a collection of unreleased material and re-mixes, is now available at VanHunt.com.

Jan 20, 2010: Chris Cain at Yoshi's

Chris Cain's jazz-tinged, blues soaked guitar and deep, warm vocals have the maturity and authenticity of bluesmen many years his senior. His expressive style is the result of a lifetime of study and the relentless pursuit of music mastery. His passion and intensity are a blend of his mother's Greek ancestry and his father's soulful black heritage.

Cain was raised on stories of his father's childhood upbringing on Memphis' Historic Beale Street and attended his first B.B King concert at the tender age of three. Blues music played continuously on the home stereo and family outings were often trips to concerts. Cain recalls, "I remember when I was a kid, my Dad would be mowing the lawn with the stereo blasting Muddy Waters. When I look back, that was pretty cool! There was always music playing at our house, Ray Charles, B.B. King, Freddie King, Albert King, all the greats."

Chris Cain and GuitarAt the age of eight, Cain taught himself to play guitar and began playing professionally before he was eighteen. Chris studied music at San Jose City College, and was soon teaching jazz improvisation on campus. Over the next twenty years, Cain would also master piano, bass guitar, clarinet, alto and tenor saxophone. The combination of his blues upbringing and his jazz studies melded to form the searing guitar style that sets Chris Cain apart and has moved him to the top ranks of the blues music scene.

Cain's debut recording, Late Night City Blues (Blue Rock'it Records-1987) garnered four W.C. Handy Blues Award nominations, including Guitarist of the Year." Dan Forte of Guitar Player wrote, "An impressive debut album by a top notch guitarist." Cain's next two releases; "Cuttin Loose" (Blind Pig Records-1990) and "Can't Buy a Break" (Blind Pig Records-1992) collected a long list of awards and accolades. In August of 1995 Blind Pig released "Somewhere Along the Way" his 4th compilation of his unique brand of original music sophisticated blues, funk, jazz and gospel.

In 2003 Patrick Ford produced Chris's latest CD, "Hall Of Shame" (Blue Rock'it Records-2003). "...this is now the sixth Chris Cain solo release I have produced, not to mention his work with me on projects like the Ford Blues Bands' "In Memory Of Michael Bloomfield" CD, and I continue to be in awe of his incredible talent. As a guitarist/singer, Chris has been praised by mentors like Albert King and peers like Robben Ford."

Larry Nager (syndicated Scripts-Howard music critic) writes, "Nowadays most young blues players are Strat-wielding Stevie Ray Vaughan-a-bes. Not Chris Cain. With a voice that recalls B.B. King and a thick toned Gibson guitar sound reminiscent of Albert King, Cain is forging a unique style. With his own highly personalized songwriting, "Hall Of Shame" is a giant step in the development of one of the most compelling young bluesmen on today's scene." Cain at JJs

Through his guitar mastery and remarkable songwriting ability, Chris Cain has established himself as a musical force to be reckoned with. And as San Jose Mercury News music reviewer John Orr writes, "more than anyone else, anywhere, Chris Cain represents the future of the blues."

Jan 19, 2010: Makaha Sons at Yoshi's

For 30 years, the Makaha Sons have committed themselves to perpetuating traditional Hawaiian music throughout Hawai‘i and the World. In 1976 the Makaha Sons of Ni‘ihau began its professional career with five members as an opening act in a small nightclub known as “Uptown Yokos.” Throughout the years the group has reorganized several times; from members seeking other professional careers, to the untimely passing of two key members of the original group. The Sons have since evolved into a trio, consisting of members Louis “Moon” Kauakahi on 6-string guitar, John Koko on upright acoustic bass and Jerome Koko on 12-string guitar.

Today, the Makaha Sons, considered to be one of Hawai‘i’s premiere Hawaiian musical groups, continue to perpetuate that vibrant sound, full and rich with harmonies that only they can create. Their incomparable vocal arrangements and delightful stage presence filled with comical antics have won the hearts of thousands of fans worldwide.

In commemoration of the group’s 30th anniversary, the Sons reflect back to the times and places they have had the privilege and honor to have been a part of. Their performances have taken them to such prestigious places as Carnegie Hall in New York City, Washington, D. C., and here in Hawai‘I, with performances for both the President and Vice-President of the United States. They have also appeared on the movie, “North Shore” and have been featured guests on shows as “The Captain and Tennille Show,” NBC’s “Today Show” with Bryant Gumbel and Katie Couric. Here locally they have appeared on shows such as “Island Music, Island Heart,” “Emme’s Island Moments” and have had the honor of performing alongside with one of America’s musical icons, Kenny Loggins of “Loggins and Messina” fame.

The Sons have also received numerous proclamations and awards, both here and in the continental U.S. for their continuous and undying efforts in perpetuating Hawaiian culture through music. Their peers in music have also acknowledged their efforts by awarding them countless “Na Hoku Hanohano Awards” for their timeless recordings and steadfast commitment to the music of Hawai‘i. They have released 21 CD’s, their latest compilation titled “Heke Wale No – Only the Very Best of the Makaha Sons,” with songs from their last five recordings from 1994 to present.

Ever mindful of the future for both the music and culture, the Makaha Sons have recently formed the “Makaha Sons Foundation”, which have generously supported a variety of organizations, from helping some of Hawai‘i’s officers of the police department, families afflicted with illnesses, to providing scholarships each year to a deserving high school graduating senior. The Makaha Sons: Moon, John, and Jerome are ever-so thankful and overjoyed to see a whole new generation of young Hawaiian artists spring to life. The legacy of Hawaiian Music continues through the efforts and recordings of such performers as Raiatea Helm, Natalie Ai Kamauu, Hoku Zuttermeister, Barry Kimokeo, Na Kama, and many, many others.

Jan 17, 2010: Robben Ford with Michael Landau, Jimmy Haslip, and Gary Novak at Yoshi's

Robben Ford is one of the premiere electric guitarists today, particularly known for his blues playing as well as his ability to be comfortable in a variety of musical contexts. A four-time Grammy nominee, he has played with artists as diverse as Joni Mitchell, Jimmy Witherspoon, Miles Davis, George Harrison, Phil Lesh, Bonnie Raitt, Claus Ogerman, Michael McDonald, and many, many others.

Born in 1951 in Ukiah, California, Robben was the third of four sons in a musical family. His father Charles was a country and western singer and guitarist before entering the army and marrying Kathryn, who played piano and had a lovely singing voice. Robben’s first chosen instrument was the saxophone, which he began to play at age ten and continued to play until his early twenties. He began to teach himself guitar at age thirteen upon hearing the two guitarists from The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Michael Bloomfield and Elvin Bishop. In the late 1960’s, Ford frequented the Fillmore and Winterland Auditoriums in San Francisco to see Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Cream, Led Zeppelin, Albert King, B.B. King and all of the progenitors of blues. “It was an incredible time for electric guitar,” Ford recalls.

On his interest in jazz, Ford says,” I fell in love with the sax playing of Paul Desmond and The Dave Brubeck Quartet, and before long found Ornette Coleman, Archie Shepp, Yusef Lateef, Roland Kirk, John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, and of course, Miles Davis.” These influences have stayed with Ford, playing a large part in his particular blend of jazz and blues that define him as a guitarist and allow him to play in a wide variety of settings.

After high school, Robben and his brothers Patrick (a blues drummer) and Mark (a blues harmonica player) formed The Charles Ford Blues Band (named after their father) and recorded for the Arhoolie label. Robben (on sax and guitar) and Patrick went on to tour the U.S. with Chicago harmonica player Charlie Musselwhite, again recording for Arhoolie.

Robben’s first attempt at forming his own jazz quartet was picked up by legendary blues singer Jimmy Witherspoon, bringing Robben to L.A. He toured the U.S. and Europe with Witherspoon and was seen by Tom Scott, and members of The L.A. Express, who were about to begin a promotional tour with Joni Mitchell for her recording “Court and Spark”. Ford was invited to play guitar on the tour and played on two recordings with Mitchell and The L.A. Express. “The two years I spent with Joni were the most formative of my musical life. Joni was just brilliant and very accessible then, and the members of The L.A. Express became good friends and teachers to me. It was great.”

Beatle George Harrison invited Robben to join him on his “Dark Horse” tour of the U.S. and Canada, raising Ford’s musical profile even further. Shortly after the two month stint with Harrison, Ford moved to Colorado to take a much needed break from music and to study with Buddhist teacher Chogyam Trungpa. In 1977, he was approached by Elektra records to record for them, which produced his first solo recording “The Inside Story” with a group of musicians who went on to become The Yellowjackets.

Elektra closed their doors in the early 1980’s, leading to a time of uncertainty for Robben. He moved to San Francisco to be close to family and his early musical history. Soon his career would take another upward swing, recording and touring with Michael McDonald, securing a recording contract with Warner Brothers Records, and meeting his soon-to-be wife, actress Anne Kerry. After moving to New York with Anne, he was called to play with musical icon Miles Davis. “Producer Tommy Lipuma played Miles my work with the Yellowjackets, then three days later, Miles called me personally to join his band. Shocking!” Ford lamented having to leave Miles after only six months because of recording commitments with Warner Brothers, but was told by Miles that if he ever wanted to come back, “just come back.”.

Robben’s 1988 release for Warner Brothers, “Talk to Your Daughter” brought his first Grammy nomination (Best Contemporary Blues Recording) and he started touring the world under his own name. Still based in New York, he backed David Sandborn on the television music show “Nite Music”, in which Sandborn hosted a variety of musical acts. Ford toured with Sandborn in 1990, then moved back to southern California shortly thereafter to be closer to his own band.

After leaving Warner Brothers, Robben signed with Stretch/GRP records, where he finally found a real home for his creativity, recording three CDs for them with his band “The Blue Line” (Tom Brechtlein on drums and Roscoe Beck on bass). After a very fruitful eight years, Robben disbanded the group and recorded two more CDs for the label which had then become Stretch/Blue Thumb: “Tiger Walk” (an instrumental recording done in New York with Keith Richard’s rhythm section) and “Supernatural”, Ford’s most accomplished work up to that point as a songwriter.

As his contract was up at Stretch/Blue Thumb, Robben signed with Concord Records, the largest independently owned record company. In 2002, he released “Blue Moon”, and in 2003 “Keep on Runnin’”, a recording full of the 60’s blues/R&B feeling with which he grew up.

Ford’s third release for Concord is entitled “Truth”. “I feel this is the best work I have done in terms of a solo recording. It is my most realized work as a songwriter, and I feel like I am reaching higher ground as a guitarist. “Truth” represents the blues as they are today; some of the songs are sociopolitical in essence, but not without humor, and the musical setting is fresh.”

Robben currently lives in Ojai, California with his wife Anne, with whom he collaborates with on various musical projects including her recent CD “Weill", which Robben produced on their own Illyria label.

Jan 13, 2010: Akiko Tsuruga at Yoshi's

Hailing from Osaka, Japan, the Hammond Organist and pianist, Akiko Tsuruga is in a center stage of New York jazz scene since 2001. This talented young organist began to play organ at the age of three and started off her career right after her graduation from Osaka College of Music. While she was based in Osaka, she had numerous opportunities to play with renowned jazz men from the United States such as Roy Hargrove, Jeff “Tain” Watts, and Grady Tate to name a few. Particularly, Grady Tate is considered as one of her mentors, and perhaps she admires the most and was influenced infinitely. He played on her Japanese debut album and convinced her to move to the United States.
Once she has landed on Jazz Mecca, New York, it didn’t take much time to be recognized by musicians. She embraced herself to be called one of top organ players in the city. She is always a crowd pleaser in Dizzy Club in Jazz at Lincoln Center, and performed in many well-known jazz venues such as Blue Note, Birdland, and Smoke. She also enjoys being a sideman of other great jazz artists. Grady Tate’s vocal group and Lou Donaldson Quartet fill up her schedule along with her own group.
Her debut CD, “Harlem Dreams” featuring Grady Tate and Frank Wess was released in Japan from M&I Company in May, 2004. CD sales was very successful and she led a “home coming” tour featured Grady Tate and Satoshi Inoue in the Summer of 2004.
She returned to Japan in the following year, September 2005, with Eric Johnson and Fukushi Tainaka. This tour wasn’t just her another successful tour. It brought an endorsement deal with Hammond Suzuki and she became an official Hammond XK-3 endorser. She also had an opportunity to write a jazz organ instructional book and published by Berklee Press, titled “Hammond Organ Complete,” and it was translated from English to Japanese and published in Japan as well.
Her second Japanese release, “Sweet and Funky” came out in November 2006. In the same year, she made appearance in Japanese movie, “Last Love,” as a jazz pianist. In Mach 2007, “Sweet and Funky” was released in North Americas through 18th & Vine Records, and Downbeat gave her four stars in their review. The album scored #13 on the jazz radio charts, and Downbeat included her “Sweet and Funky” within their “Best CDs of 2007” list. Downbeat Critics Poll also made a good remark on her talent and gave her 10th spot in Rising Star Organist ranking. In October 2007, her 3rd Japanese release, “St. Luis Blues” featuring Bernard Purdie and Houston Person came out. More noteworthy, she performed extensively as a member of Lou Donaldson Quartet throughout the United States, and appearances at Birdland, the Village Vanguard, and Carnegie Hall were another highlights of this year. Then, she concluded her glorious 2007 with the New Star Award by Swing Journal Magazine.
In 2008, she had released an album from Mojo Records called “N.Y.C. Serenade” with Jimmy Cobb followed by a three-week long CD release tour in Japan with her regular trio. Recent recording of her 2nd North Americas release, “Oriental Express” from 18th & Vine Records are scheduled in this Summer, 2009. This album features Eric Johnson, Rudy Petschauer and Jerry Weldon and it is eagerly waited by the fans.

Jan 12, 2010: Pellejo Seco - Open Dance Floor! at Yoshi's

Without a doubt, Pellejo Seco marks a new plateau in Latin music in the San Francisco Bay Area. Founded in the East Bay in 2004 by Ivan Camblor, this eclectic group has its roots in Traditional Cuban music and performs only original compositions The group produces a creative sound which combines the exquisite, popular and fantastic. In its evolutionary process, Pellejo Seco has caught its own distinct flavor which intertwines progressive Fusion Rock, Latin pop, Brazilian, Flamenco, Afro-Cuban and Jazz. Ivan Camblor named the band, Pellejo Seco, and interprets it to mean ìRaw Hide.î For Ivan the name has many meanings, one of which is to describe the dry and leathered skin of a ìcampesinoî or farmer.

Jan 10, 2010: Allan Holdsworth With Terry Bozzio, Tony Levin & Pat Mastellotto at Yoshi's

ALLAN HOLDSWORTH(guitar; - born in 1946 in Bradford, England, is widely considered to be one of the finest instrumentalists in jazz-rock- fusion, since the 70s. Before launching his brilliant solo career, Holdsworth was member of seminal progressive rock and jazz fusion bands in the 70s, such as Tempest, Soft Machine, Tony Williams Lifetime, Gong, Bruford, UK and in his career has also played with rock and jazz luminaries Jack Bruce, Jeac Luc Ponty, Billy Cobham, Level 42 and Gordon Beck, among others. When Holdsworth launched his solo career, which over the years has seen the release of nearly 20 albums, he quickly established himself as an extraordinary guitarist joined by an arsenal of acclaimed musicians, such as Paul Williams (former bandmate of Holdsworth's in Tempest), Gary Husband, Jeff Berlin, Chad Wackerman, Jimmy Johnson, Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Hunt, Alan Pasqua, Tony Williams, among others. In the mid 80s, Holdsworth was one of the first musicians to use the Synthaxe (a guitar-synthesizer that contained a breath controller that proved to be a cross between a synthesizer, a guitar, and a saxophone) and was awarded Best Guitar-Synthesizer player from 1989 through 1994 in the readers' poll of Guitar Player magazine. During the mid 80s, Holdsworth created a signature guitar model with Ibanez, and in the 90s, he also created another signature guitar model with the Carvin company. In the mid 90s, Holdsworth briefly shifted away from his fusion origins and recorded an album with longtime musical partner Gordon Beck that dipped into jazz standards. While Allan Holdsworth has focuses mainly on his own band - touring extensively worldwide -, still during this time, in the mid 90s, he got together with ex-members of Gong, to take part on the band Gongzilla, named after Gong, and recorded the album "Suffer" (1995), and in 2002 he joined Soft Works, a sort of Soft Machine alumni super group, featuring England's jazz legends Elton Dean, Hugh Hopper and John Marshall. Recently he also joined a collective jazz-rock-fusion supergroup featuring Alan Pasqua, Jimmy Haslip and Chad Wackerman and actively performs worldwide with his own trio.

TERRYBOZZIO(drums, percussion; - born in 1950, Bay area, California) is classically trained and phenomenally skilled drummer. He made his name recording and touring with Frank Zappa (and appearing in the concert movie Baby Snakes), and then the band UK. After his audition for Zappa, all the drummers behind him in the line left, and he was accepted. He was particularly famous for performing Zappa's "The Black Page", a piece of music designed to be a "musician's nightmare" a page so filled with notes as to be almost black. Bozzio went on to form Missing Persons with his then-wife and lead vocalist Dale Bozzio, ex-Zappa guitarist Warren Cuccurillo, ex-Zappa bassist Patrick O'Hearn and keyboard player Chuck Wild. After disbanding Missing Persons in 1986, Terry joined up with ex-Duran Duran guitarist Andy Taylor for his solo band. Recently, he has worked with the band Korn on their 8th studio album after the departure of their drummer David Silveria. Bozzio’s drumming innovation consists in creating the melodic ostinato for the drum set when he noticed how a pianist would solo or play counter rhythms against the ostinato or pedal point. He then applied this concept to the drum set. Bozzio is also noted for creating orchestral compositions on the drum set by playing polyrhythmics and metric modulations while utilizing his large custom kit (sometimes nicknamed "SS Bozzio"), in which the tom toms are tuned to specific notes to create the atmosphere that is Bozzio’s signature sound.

TONYLEVIN(upright bass, bass guitar, stick; - born in 1946, Boston, Massachusetts) is one of the world’s most famous and the most accomplished bass guitar and Chapman stick players. Levin is best-known for his work with progressive rock pioneers King Crimson and Peter Gabriel. Has also been a member of Bruford Levin Upper Extremities, Liquid Tension Experiment and leads his own bands, Tony Levin Band and Stickman. Aprolific session musician since the 1970s, Levin has played on hundreds of albums, including those of John Lennon, Lou Reed, Alice Cooper, Pink Floyd, Yes, Seal, Sarah McLachlan, The Roches, Todd Rundgren, Cher, and jazz legend Buddy Rich. Additionally, he has toured with artists including Paul Simon (with whom Tony appeared in Simon's 1980 film "One Trick Pony"), Gary Burton, James Taylor, Herbie Mann, Goro Noguchi, Judy Collins, Joe Yamanaka, Carly Simon, Peter Frampton, Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe, Tim Finn, Richie Sambora, and Claudio Baglioni. Levin helped to popularize the Chapman Stick and the NS upright bass. He has also created "funk fingers", a device for mimicking the sound of hitting the strings with drumsticks (which sounds similar to slap style bass).

PAT MASTELOTTO(drums, percussion, electronics; - born in 1955, Chico, California) is a rock drummer who has worked with Mr. Mister, King Crimson and XTC, amongst others. For King Crimson he initially formed part of the "double trio", joining Bill Bruford on drums. As a session drummer he started playing among others with Martin Briley, Al Jarreau, Pointer Sisters, Patti LaBelle, Kenny Loggins, Martika, Jack Wagner, Danny Wilde, and others. Pat was also a founding member of Mr. Mister a band in the mid 1980's held number one singles, album and video. Followed by more session work for XTC, The Sugarcubes, Hall & Oates, Cock Robin, The Rembrandts, Jude Cole, Eddie Money, Tina Arena, Mark Jordon, Matthew Sweet, Julia Fordham, Robyn Hitchcock, David Sylvian. Since 1994 Mastelotto has been a member of King Crimson, appearing on over twenty band’s albums and several music videos. Other significant projects include drum duo with Terry Bozzio and TU with Trey Gunn, guesting on California Guitar Trio and Flower Kings, and recently Stickman with Tony Levin.
