Dec 26, 2009: Josue Pellot: New Work at Chicago Cultural Center - Michigan Avenue Galleries

Chicago artist Josue Pellot deploys several mediums and styles to examine his Puerto Rican roots that were transplanted to the quintessential American experience and mediated by its pop culture and consumerism. For example, a castle-like food/liquor/laundromat supplants the Puerto Rican fortress "El Morro" in photo montage; encapsulated figurines from a gumball machines inspire a series of sculptural portraits of his family; and life-sized palettes stand in for family portraits as moveable commodities.

Dec 26, 2009: Rosilene Luduvico: Paintings and Drawings at Chicago Cultural Center - Michigan Avenue Galleries

This exhibition of mostly small-scale works highlights the accomplishment of Brazilian-born, German-based artist Rosilene Luduvico. Her paintings and works on paper are intimate, pastel expressions that include self-portraits and landscapes in a particularly spare and subtle style. Yet, they evidence why Luduvico has had great success on several continents since her graduation from the Dusseldorf Academy of Art in 2005.

Dec 26, 2009: Jane Fulton Alt: After the Storm at Chicago Cultural Center - Michigan Avenue Galleries

Jane Fulton Alt, a Chicago-based artist and clinical social worker, witnessed the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans in August 2005, and used her photography as both a coping mechanism and a way of helping the cause. This unprecedented natural disaster is captured in the approximately 35 color photographs presented in the exhibition, following the recent publication of her book on the same subject - 'Look and Leave: Photographs and Stories of New Orleans's Lower Ninth Ward.'
