Jan 17, 2010: Tribute to Conan O'Brien - SF Sketchfest at Herbst Theater

The SF Sketchfest Tribute to Conan O'Brien
Hosted by Jimmy Pardo
with special guest Andy Richter

*******

Each year SF Sketchfest honors an individual or group that has made an influential and unparalleled contribution to the world of comedy. This year, the seventh annual SF Sketchfest Tribute Award will be presented to The Tonight Show host Conan O’Brien.

Early in his career, O’Brien helmed the legendary Harvard Lampoon and wrote for television series icons Saturday Night Live and The Simpsons. It was from there that he was championed by Lorne Michaels to host Late Night with Conan O'Brien, where he combined his talents as a writer, performer and interviewer from 1993 to 2008. The two-time host of the Primetime Emmy Awards then took over the reins of the venerable The Tonight Show on June 1, 2009. On the afternoon of January 17, Conan O’Brien will make a rare live appearance at the Herbst Theatre, sitting down for an in-depth conversation with comedian Jimmy Pardo, featuring a special appearance by O’Brien’s longtime friend and collaborator Andy Richter. Previous Tribute recipients are The State, The Kids in the Hall, Paul Reubens, Mr. Show, Dana Carvey and Amy Sedaris.

Jan 12, 2010: Baritone Nathan Gunn in concert at Herbst Theater

Popular baritone Nathan Gunn makes his San Francisco recital debut, performing Schubert's powerful "Die schone Mullerin" accompanied by his wife, Julie Gunn. The concert is presented by San Francisco Performances.

Known for his versatility, the 39-year-old has performed not only such classic roles as the main characters in "Billy Budd" and "Il Barbiere di Siviglia," but also created the role of Alec Harvey in Andre Previn's "Brief Encounter" at Houston Grand Opera and will create the role of Paul in the world premiere of Daron Hagen's "Amelia" at Seattle Opera later this season. Gunn recently ventured outside the standard opera repertoire to appear in semi-staged performances of "Camelot" with the New York Philharmonic (broadcast live on PBS's Great Performances) and "Showboat" at Carnegie Hall.

It was just announced that Gunn's acclaimed recording of a signature role - "Britten: Billy Budd," a Virgin Classics release recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra, Daniel Harding conductor - is among the nominees for a 2010 Grammy Award for "Best Opera Recording."

The baritone has also had impact in the popular culture, appearing on TV's "The Colbert Report" and being included in People Magazine's "Sexiest Men Alive" (2008).

The Herbst recital reflects Gunn's most serious performance persona. "Die schone Mullerin" is a classic of the German lieder repertoire. In the late 19th century, young Berlin intellectuals invented a parlor game that was at once serious and ironic, based on the old mill-romance. They wrote and recited poems on the subject and acted out the parts. One of them, the aptly named Wilhelm Muller ("miller" in German), collected 23 of his mill-romance poems and published them as "Die schone Mullerin" (usually translated as "The Fair Maid of the Mill") in 1821. Just two years later, in 1823, Schubert set them to music.

Gunn and his wife both teach at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where they live with their five children.

Jan 10, 2010: Cellist Steven Isserlis in concert at Herbst Theater

San Francisco Performances welcomes back renowned cellist Steven Isserlis for a recital with pianist Kirill Gerstein. In addition to his distinguished career as a soloist, chamber musician and teacher, Isserlis is a prolific blogger and children's book author.

The dynamic pair will perform Benjamin Britten's "Sonata for Cello and Piano in C Major, Opus 65"; an arrangement by Isserlis of Schumann's "Violin Sonata No. 3"; and Rachmaninoff's "Sonata in G minor for Piano and Cello, Opus 19."

British cellist Steven Isserlis has played with many of the foremost period instrument orchestras, including Dvorak's Cello Concerto with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment under Sir Simon Rattle, and Beethoven's complete works for cello and keyboard with fortepianist Robert Levin in Boston and London.

Isserlis is also a strong advocate of contemporary music, and has worked with many composers on new commissions since giving the world premiere of John Tavener's "Protecting Veil" at the BBC Proms in 1989. In 2009 at the Aldeburgh Festival he premiered Thomas Ades's new work for cello and piano, "Lieux retrouves," together with the composer/pianist (who appears on San Francisco Performances Piano Series March 16).

Writing and playing for children is another major interest. Isserlis's first book, a children's history of the lives of six great composers, "Why Beethoven Threw the Stew," was published in 2001 and prompted a 2006 sequel, "Why Handel Waggled his Wig." Since then he has presented a series of children's concerts, based on his books, at the 92nd St Y in New York. With pianist Stephen Hough he has recorded a CD, "Children's Cello," and with composer Anne Dudley is currently writing a series of musical stories for children.

Dec 31, 2009: Not Your Normal New Year's Eve: A Night of Stand-up Comedy at Herbst Theater

Experience a mind-blowing night of stand-up comedy featuring today's hottest and most groundbreaking comedians: Brent Weinbach, Will Franken, Moshe Kasher, and hosted by Jill Bourque. The show takes place at the grand Herbst Theatre. There will be an exciting midnight countdown and balloon drop.

"Not Your Normal New Year's Eve", the comedy show and 2010 countdown is Thursday, December 31st at 10pm until after midnight. For tickets ($25-40) and information, call 415-392-4400 or visit www.NYNNYE.com. There will be an exciting finale and midnight balloon drop.

Brent Weinbach, Will Franken, and Moshe Kasher are cutting edge comedy artists, each with their own singular styles. All three got their start in San Francisco's eclectic underground comedy scene.

BRENT WEINBACH has been called "obscenely, disturbingly brilliant" by the LA Weekly. The East Bay Express said "Weinbach's comedy is about poaching characters from real life and inhabiting them that you forget who you're watching onstage." He is the winner of the 2007 Andy Kaufman Award, a coveted prize given to "promising performers with the potential to impact the evolving culture of comedy."

WILL FRANKEN was named "Best Comedian" by SF Weekly. Rob Avila at the SF Bay Guardian said "Imagine a surreal-estate agent guiding you through some Escher-like architectural marvel, where each room is it's own deeply funny, satirical dream."

MOSHE KASHER just won the prestigious "Best of the Fest" at the Aspen Rooftop Comedy Festival. The SF Examiner says he "displays a firey frustration and agile, confident showcase of his neuroses." And Punchline magazine says he "has a powerful comedic voice and amazingly wide range."

JILL BOURQUE has performed her unique style of improvisational stand-up comedy in nightclubs, festivals, and theaters all over the world. The San Francisco Examiner says her "immediate and intimate improv resonates."

Feb 5, 2010: Alexander/Alexandria: the Flowering of Hellenistic Culture at Herbst Theater

Alexander conquered the vast Persian Empire and founded Alexandria before dying in his 33rd year in 323 BCE. In the aftermath, Greek literature, learning and art intermingled with Egyptian, Persian, Babylonian and Hebrew cultures. The interplay of cultures caused ethnic, artistic and religious conflicts and convergence. Nowhere did this convergence of cultures emerge more dramatically than in Alexandria, which became the royal seat of Hellenistic Egypt. Its Great Library and Museum and its Lighthouse--one of the ancient wonders of the world--became magnets for travelers from all around the Mediterranean and beyond. Though Alexandria's original Library was destroyed long ago, another has risen from its ashes, and the luster of Hellenistic Civilization that flourished for three centuries after Alexander still endures.

Jan 3, 2010: SFCO Home Series Concert: Double Trouble at Herbst Theater

The San Francisco Chamber Orchestra performs its first Home Series Concerts of the 2009-10 Season over the New Year's holiday. "Double Trouble" features four pairs of soloists and a great, double-digit Haydn symphony, No. 77 in B-flat Major from his prolific period at the Esterhazy court. Double concertos by Antonio Vivaldi, Arthur Honegger, and a world premiere by local violinist and composer Gloria Justen will be presented, plus an evocative duo for two violins by our Grammy award-winning Composer in Residence, Gabriela Lena Frank, from her string quartet Quijotadas (2007).

The SFCO continues its Debut Artists tradition, featuring rising young classical stars from the Bay Area, with young cellists Isabel Lau and Benjamin Luo performing Vivaldi's dramatic Concerto for Two Cellos in G minor.

Neoclassical in style, Arthur Honegger's delightful Concerto da Camera is in three movements: the first a jaunty, rhythmically charged Allegretto amabile; the second a dark, somber Andante; the third a playful Vivace that puts the soloists through their virtuoso paces.

Gloria Justen's evocative music spring from her explorations in improvisation and desire to create soundscapes that reflect the natural world back to us. Her Double Concerto for Violin and Cello, commissioned by the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra, will receive its world premiere performance at this concerts, featuring Ms. Justen herself on violin and SFCO principal cellist Eric Gaenslen on cello.

Ms. Frank's 2007 string quartet, Quijotados, describes in music the extravagant delusions wrought in the quixotic spirit of Cervante's famous novel, El Ingenioso Hidalgo don Quixote da la Mancha.

Symphony No. 77 in B-flat major, written by Haydn at the age of 50 in 1782, is remarkable in that it is so unremarkable, yet so clearly a work of genius. From the very first bars, the listener is drawn into a beautifully realized and exquisitely controlled musical world.
