Oct 22, 2009: Bill Burr From "Chappelle's Show", Comedy Central, and HBO's "One-Night Stand" at DC Improv Comedy Club

Bill Burr is an American comedian or a comedian from the North American Union, depending on when you read this. He grew up outside of Boston, Massachusetts and did fairly poorly in school, despite the fact that he applied himself.

Having first gained notoriety for his recurring role on the second season of "Chappelle's Show," Burr developed a comedic style of uninformed logic that has made him a regular performer on the "Late Show with David Letterman" and "Late Night with Conan O'Brien."

Bill's first hour special, "Why Do I Do This?" premiered on Comedy Central on August 31 to rave reviews and is now available on CD and DVD. His first CD, "Emotionally Unavailable: Expanded Edition," was released by What Are Records. Bill starred in his own HBO "One Night Stand" and "Comedy Central Presents" half hour specials and he has performed on "Showtime at the Apollo," BET's "Comic View" and Jamie Foxx's "Laffapalooza."

Bill recently shot a pilot for his own weekly series for Comedy Central. Hosted and exec produced by Burr, the prospective show would focus on a single theme or topic and explore it through Bill's point of view using standup, sketch and digital shorts.

When in New York, Burr always drops in on "The Opie and Anthony Show" and eats at Ray's Famous Pizza, because he "loves all three of those mother fuckers." Bill also co-hosts his own SiriusXM radio show, "Uninformed", with fellow comedian Joe Derosa.

In the future Bill hopes to get married, have some kids, and get a dog. But until then, he will continue to spend most of his mid-afternoons sitting in his sweatpants learning AC/DC songs on his SG.

Bill is against organized religion and believes we should go back to the gold standard for our currency. None of his opinions are based on any sort of reliable information. He tends to go with his first thought, because reading makes him sleepy.

Oct 16, 2009: Patrice Oneal From HBO, Comedy Central, and "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" at DC Improv Comedy Club

Patrice got his first real taste of stand-up at a place called Estelle's in Boston. He was heckling a comic, and the comic suggested maybe Patrice thought he could do better. Patrice did and the following week he went on stage at Estelle's and brought down the house. From there he went on to work at the Comedy Connection, then moved to working at most of the clubs in and around Boston, New England, and New York. Now, years later, Patrice has a wide range of comic tools.

In one bit, Patrice, at 6'5'' and 300+ lbs., makes the audience hear and almost see the story of the eastern European gymnast quietly speaking of her difficult upbringing and training. The Boston Globe said, "It is a hilarious piece made all the more so by the contradiction between Oneal's very visible presence and that of the young white girl he is playing."

Asked to whom he aspires, Patrice mentions only two names: George Carlin and Richard Pryor.

Carlin for his distinct point of view and universal appeal; Pryor for his honesty, vulnerability and Personal revelation. Patrice has appeared on "The Late Show with Conan O'Brien" three times and was a regular on the very popular, Comedy Central's "Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn". He has also performed stand-up at both the prestigious Montreal Just For Laughs and the HBO U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen. Additionally Patrice has Guest Starred on numerous Television Shows including FOX's critically acclaimed "Arrested Development" and NBC's "The Office". He was also a series regular on FOX's drama, "The Jury".

You can hear him voicing the animated shows "Shorties Watchin' Shorties" on Comedy Central and "O'Grady High" on "Noggin". Catch Patrice in the films "The 25th Hour" directed by Spike Lee, "In The Cut" with Meg Ryan and "Head Of State" with Chris Rock.

Patrice has also performed half hour specials on both Showtime and Comedy Central. Be sure to check out Patrice in his latest special, his own HBO "One Night Stand" half hour special airing late this summer.

Sep 3, 2009: Allan Havey From HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm", Comedy Central and "The Late Show" at DC Improv Comedy Club

Allan Havey started his stand-up career in New York City in 1981. Up until that time he had been part of the comedy duo TWO FOR NOTHING which he co-founded with John McFarland, a classmate at Florida State University.

The two were busy actors at the School of Theatre, but the sizes of their roles gave them ample time to goof-off and discover their mutual love of getting laughs.

After graduating in 1978 with a BFA in theatre, Havey took off for New York with McFarland close behind. For the next two years they performed their act in small clubs and coffee houses around the city. They were well received but Havey, jealous of stand-ups who did not have to rely on anyone but themselves, lit out on his own. He first passed at the Improvisation in the fall of 81. Bartending, waiting tables and finally answering phones at the Improv he started to make a living at stand-up in October 82 and never looked back.

He played small clubs and Jersey one-nighters for awhile. Getting small parts in commercials and hustling any gig he could. In January 1984 he was cast by Lorne Michaels in THE NEW SHOW Michael's first venture after leaving SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE in 1980. For the next 10 weeks Havey worked with Steve Martin, John Candy, Buck Henry, Gilda Radner Dave Thomas and some of the best writers and comic actors in the business. Unfortunately the show was canceled and Havey went back to the clubs.

He made his national television debut on November 13th 1986 on LATE NIGHT WITH DAVID LETTERMAN. By this time Havey was headlining in colleges and clubs all over the country. He went on to make several appearances on the Letterman show in the eighties and nineties. His latest shot aired on July 18th 2003.

As an actor he has appeared in the films: INTERNAL AFFAIRS with Richard Gere, CHECKING OUT with Jeff Daniels, ROUNDERS with Matt Damon, as well as the soon to be released WILD THINGS PART 2 "THE GLADES" with Isaiah Washington.

Over the years he has appeared on television acting in SEINFELD, THE LOUIE SHOW, and CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM and as a blonde-haired DJ on VIPER.

In November of 1989 he was hand picked by HBO to be one of the hosts of THE COMEDY CHANNEL which later became COMEDY CENTRAL. He created, hosted and produced NIGHT AFTER NIGHT WITH ALLAN HAVEY. It ran for just over three years and became a cult classic that is remembered fondly for breaking new ground and talent in comedy today. During this period his stand up flourished shooting two half-hour specials for HBO both being nominated for cable ace awards.

He has taken part in the JUST FOR LAUGHS comedy festival in Montreal on several occasions as well as the KILKENNY comedy festival, ASPEN comedy festival, and the NEW YORK comedy festival. He has made tours of Australia and Europe and continues to be one of the best comedians working today.

Sep 10, 2009: Aries Spears - From "MADtv", Comedy Central & HBO's "Def Comedy Jam" at DC Improv Comedy Club

Ever since Chicago native Aries Spears was 14 years old, he has been a force to be reckoned with in the comedy scene throughout America. His quick wit, charisma and ferociously aggressive style of comedy have earned him critical acclaim, high accolades, and above all, a busy schedule. From being a regular on Fox's Mad TV, starring in feature films, appearing on a number of national talk shows, and continually touring the country with his stand-up, Aries's talents are becoming recognized and appreciated throughout the entertainment industry.

As a principal cast member on Fox's hit sketch comedy show Mad TV, Aries brought a fresh, hip style to the already-edgy program from the third through the tenth season. The producers made full use of many of Aries's talents by calling on him frequently to create new hilarious characters and write sketches. Some of the many recurring characters that Aries is famous for on the show include: Belma Buttons, Bill Cosby, Jesse Jackson, Mike Tyson, Walter (Crackheads), Reggie (Erascist), Dollar Bill Montgomery, Shaquille O'Neal, The Klumps, Michael Jackson, Sisqo, Evander Holyfield, El Diablo Negro and more. Aries also boasts a number of uproarious impersonations on the show that include James Brown, Al Pacino, and his childhood idol Eddie Murphy. The Aries-branded sketch "Talkin' American" was Mad TV's most popular bit, keeping fans tuned in and boosting Mad's ratings impressively on Saturday night.

Aries has also found great success in the world of feature films. At the age of 17, after being spotted in a comedy club, Aries landed a part in the movie Home of Angels, which also starred Abe Vigoda and Sherman Helmsley, but never saw a theatrical release. He then appeared in Out-of-Sync, and portrayed Red Foxx in Warner Bros.'s Why Do Fools Fall In Love. In addition, Aries starred alongside John Leguizamo in TriStar's The Pest and delivered his most notable performance to date as Cuba Gooding, Jr.'s brother in Columbia's blockbuster hit Jerry Maguire.

Aries was born on April 3, 1975 in Chicago but grew up in New Jersey. He remembers at the young age of six being the funnyman of the household and impersonating family members at the dinner table during holidays. By age 14, Aries was belting out his fresh stylings in front of paying audiences at local clubs around his hometown. Shortly thereafter, he appeared on Russell Simmons's Def Comedy Jam on HBO and Showtime at the Apollo. The word was out about the prodigal superstar from then on, and in 1992, Aries moved to Los Angeles. He quickly landed a recurring role on NBC's A Different World, and was signed to a huge development deal at one of the major television studios. The following year, Aries found himself starring in the short-lived CBS series South of Sunset with former Eagles guitarist Glenn Frey. Although the series didn't last long, it did not discourage other networks from tapping Aries's talents for their projects, as he soon appeared in Crosstown Traffic and Brisco County, Jr. for Fox. Ultimately, Aries's fierce momentum landed him on Mad TV as a series regular, where he thrived for eight seasons.

Aries continues to spread his comedic wings with the development of feature film projects, which he is currently involved in writing. He is presently developing a feature project based on an original character that he created on Mad TV, as well as a thriller about a young black man immersed in hip-hop culture. Additionally, Aries has made appearances on many talk shows including: Loveline, Vibe, Keenen Ivory Wayans, Soul Train, and Late Friday. He has also lent his voice to an animated character on C-Bear and Jamal and had a recurring stint on Fox's The Best Damn Sports Show Period, where he created some of the show's funniest characters during his short time there.

Aries maintains a strong connection to his African roots and is involved in many charitable events, including a number of organizations that help abused women. He feels blessed to have been able to achieve everything that he has, but he in no way intends on stopping there. Given the extreme growing success rate of action comedies coming out of Hollywood, it's safe to say that Aries Spears will be in demand for quite some time.

Aug 7, 2009: Ian Bagg From "The Late Late Show", "The Tonight Show" and Comedy Central at DC Improv Comedy Club

So you have come learn about Ian Bagg and what he has done. Well be prepared to be amazed. Ian was born in a little town of Terrace, BC in Canada (approximately 750 miles north of Vancouver). His parents Robyn and Gary, a Canadian and an Australian, gave Ian two passports but sadly neither of them were American. Ian had to embark on becoming an immigrant to America. In 1996 he moved to New York City after starting in Vancouver, BC in 1994 (the year that the Vancouver Canucks lost to the New York Rangers in the Stanley Cup NHL playoffs) he became a regular at the Comic Strip and the Comedy Cellar in New York and immediately ended up doing three appearances on the Connan Obrien Show.

In 2000 Ian made his move to Los Angeles, but before leaving New York he did the Aspen Comedy Festival, the Montreal Comedy Festival as well as stand up spots on HBO Showcase Comics, Friday Nights and his first small film role in Tim Robbins film The Cradle Will Rock. He was also a regular member in the sketch group The Milk Duds but Los Angeles came a calling and he packed up and moved to Beverly Hills.

While ending up in a slew of independent movies such as The Purpose, Save the Mavericks and Ffing Frank, he booked bit parts in sitcoms such as The Damon Show as well as doing correspondent work for Myspace.com. He hosted The Hollywood Burn on Ripe TV and on his live talk show The Ian Bagg Show that took place at the Friars Club in Beverly Hills. Touring constantly through The Improv chain and other independent clubs he has done repeat performances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn and Craig Ferguson. His Comedy Central Presents Ian Bagg was responded to with much acclaim and was how he ended up dating Britney Spears for three romantic nights.

In 2007 Ian made a second appearance at the Aspen Comedy Festal and filmed an HBO special called A Comics Climb with Ian Bagg. In love with the art of stand up he was thrilled when The History Channel came knocking and asked him to be a part of the special History of the Joke. Doing shows in China, Europe, Middle East, Australia and all over North America keeps his frequent flier points high and his knowledge of the world sharp. Al Gore described his comedy as controlled chaos, President Regan on his death described it as an interactive delight and Nancy agreed. Do not miss your chance of seeing Ian Bagg live.

Aug 7, 2009: Will Durst starring in THE LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF CONFUSION hosted in The Comedy Lounge at DC Improv Comedy Club

ONE MAN SHOW - HOSTED IN THE DC IMPROV COMEDY LOUNGE.

Fresh from the triumph of his acclaimed 2007 one- man Off Broadway show, "The All American Sport of Bipartisan Bashing," political comedian Will Durst is back with his quiver chock full of fresh topical barbs. "The Lieutenant Governor from the State of Confusion" is a hilarious voyage into the human condition investigating the foibles and insecurities of man. Nah, it just pretty much makes fun of politics and politicians. But while he mocks and scoffs and taunts, he does do it with taste.

It's political comedy for people who don't like politics. And while a new administration may mean a new direction for the country, its also fresh ammunition for Durst in his first show since turning "The All American Sport of Bipartisan Bashing" into a book by the same name (now available in paperback from Ulysses Press.)

Durst, sworn enemy to tyrants, foreign and domestic, has managed to patch together a half way decent quilt of a comedy career via syndicated columns, radio and television commentaries, stand up comedy, stage and screen acting, talk show hosting, voice- overs and now the book. Nominated for 5 Emmys and 7 nominations for the American Comedy Awards Stand up of the Year, he has yet to win anything. Even a toaster for crum's sake. He's performed in 14 different countries, garnered 500+ television appearances including regular current stints on CNN & Fox News, has performed for 3 elected Presidents, a bunch of governors and once made Bill Clinton laugh so hard he spit water through his nose, which durst still considers the highlight of his career.

Here's a few nice things said about "The All American Sport of Bipartisan Bashing."

"WILL DURST IS THE NATURAL SUCCESSOR TO MORT SAHL." - The New York Post.

"HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! DURST IS AT HIS SLY, SAVVY BEST. A SHARP ONE MAN SHOW." - The New York Times.

"A GREAT POLITICAL SATIRIST! ONE OF THE FUNNIEST GUYS AROUND!" - Fox News Radio.

"IF YOU'RE TIRED OF POLITICS AS USUAL, YOU'LL LOVE WILL DURST." - WOR Radio.

"ONE OF THE GREATEST COMMENTATORS OF ALL THINGS POLITICAL. HE'S ONE OF THE BEST." – Rachel Maddow MSNBC.

"HE'S PERFECTED A VERBAL JITTERBUG OF COMEDY, TAKING ON POLITICS, AND WAR AND RHETORIC." The New Yorker Magazine.

The DC Improv Lounge will be serving food and beverages.

Aug 21, 2009: Dave Attell from Comedy Central's "Insomniac" and "The Gong Show" at DC Improv Comedy Club

Dave Attell was named one of the 25 Funniest People in America by Entertainment Weekly Magazine. His caustic wit, rapid-fire delivery and his choice of material that can best be described as "very adult" has earned him the reputation as a "comic s comic." But if you ask Attell, hed say, "Im just trying to get some laughs and sell some drinks."

In 2001, Attell used this love of booze and laughter to create and host the hit series, "Insomniac with Dave Attell" for Comedy Central. A travelogue show in which Attell goes from city to city looking for late-night fun, The New York Times called the show, "a doubly rare beast, a comedy without rancor and a travel show about the virtues of the American underdog." To Attell, the Insomniac show is more of a cross between "Girls Gone Wild and Cops. After four seasons of Insomniac, Attell taped several hour-long Insomniac specials overseas in Japan, Germany, England and Brazil. Once back in the states, he headed out on a thirty-five city theatre tour ending in Vegas, where he hosted a two-hour special for Comedy Central featuring Sean Rouse, Greg Geraldo and Dane Cook, some of the biggest comics in the country.

Dave Attell has made numerous appearances on The Late Show with David Letterman , The Tonight Show with Jay Leno , Late Night with Conan O Brien , The Howard Stern Show , Later with Carson Daly and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart . He also appeared in Chris Rocks cult film "Pootie Tang . Other television credits include FOX s "Arrested Development," NBC s "Ed," HBO, Comedy Centrals "Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn" and his own half-hour stand-up special "Comedy Central Presents Dave Attell .

When not on the road, Attell makes regular appearances at the Comedy Cellar in New York City.

Aug 14, 2009: Michael McDonald The Longest-running "MADtv" cast member at DC Improv Comedy Club

The longest-running "MADtv" cast member to date did not start out with such career aspirations. After graduating from Servite High School (located in his hometown of Fullerton, California), Michael McDonald pursued a business major at the University of Southern California. Once he received his business degree from USC, Michael accepted a job as a loan officer at a Los Angeles Bank. At one point, he even worked as a kindergarten assistant. In an interview that he granted years later, Michael referred to it as the toughest job he has ever had: "By midday, when the kids were taking their naps, I'd put my head on the desk and take one, too. I was exhausted." Michael does note, however, that some of the inspiration for his most famous "MADtv" character, Stuart, comes from those challenging experiences with the youngsters.

From such inauspicious beginnings, however, Michael would slowly find his way into show business. One night, a friend took him to a show at Los Angeles's famed Groundlings Theater. At the time, Michael was still employed as a loan officer; however, the sketch comedy and improv that he witnessed on that fateful night changed his life forever. Michael immediately quit his banking job to enroll in the Groundlings' improv program; from 1992 to 1997, he was a member of the legendary comedy troupe. He received his first professional acting and writing jobs through Concorde Pictures, the low-budget movie studio owned by the notorious "King of the Bs," Roger Corman. In some films, Michael served merely as an extra; still, according to Michael, even when he was given major roles, the film scripts themselves were so poorly written that he couldn't help thinking, "I may not be a good writer, but I'm no worse than whatever they're doing here." Once Michael began writing his own scripts, he was even given the chance to direct a couple of films. In fact, at one point in his career, he considered giving up acting altogether so that he could concentrate on writing and directing. As Michael watched his fellow Groundlings leave for "Saturday Night Live" and "MADtv," all the while receiving no such offers himself, he felt certain that he had made the right career move: "I just kind of said, 'I guess it's not going to happen for me,' and I gave up on it."

Ironically, once Michael gave up on his acting pursuits, the offers started rolling in. He tested for not only "Saturday Night Live" and "MADtv" but also a sitcom, all within the span of a week. In 1998, at the start of the show's fourth season, Michael at last became a "MADtv" cast member. Although he began Season Four of "MADtv" as a featured player, he was quickly bumped up to full cast member status. After eight seasons of performing and writing sketches on "MADtv," Michael finally got the chance to direct again as he stepped behind the camera for a few Season 12 episodes.

Michael also found plenty of outside projects to keep him busy during his "MADtv" tenure. In addition to his guest appearances on shows such as "Seinfeld" and "Ellen," Michael had a recurring role on "Scrubs" and was even granted the opportunity to direct a "Scrubs" episode in 2007 ("My Conventional Wisdom"). Among Michael's film credits are brief appearances in all three Austin Powers movies and a starring role in 2006's Moonpie, which also stars one of his former "MADtv" coworkers, Stephnie Weir. Michael even found time to do a little stage work: once again with Stephnie Weir, he starred in the Cape Playhouse production of A.R. Gurney's The Dining Room.

During Michael's tenth season on "MADtv" (Season 13), he was asked if he ever thought about leaving the series. "I'm always thinking about moving on," he admitted. "Some people say, 'Well you know, why don't you move on?' And believe me, I always look around; but right now in television, nobody's making comedy anymore. So it's one of the few good gigs." While Michael said that he definitely wanted to continue exploring entertainment options outside the parameters of sketch comedy, he still loved working on "MADtv." Ten years after being hired, Michael never seemed to be bored with the series that had been so good to him over the years: "We get to do different stuff every week, so the cure for 'aren't you tired of doing the same thing?' is kind of built into the show, that you get to do new things all the time." Sadly, however, the newness would eventually reach a limit that even Michael could not handle.

After the show's thirteenth season, Michael announced that his ten-year stay on "MADtv" had indeed come to a close. Although he did not give a specific reason for his abrupt departure, many fans suspected that the drastically different Season 13 format for the series, as well as the move to the Henry Fonda Theater that year, disheartened the veteran, who, like the other cast members, had a fondness for the show's old studio and its original, time-honored format. Even so, fans can take solace in the fact that this endlessly talented performed is now free to dedicate himself to those other aforementioned entertainment endeavors, which will surely come his way in droves. While fans will always miss the presence of the long-time "MADtv" cast member, who always seemed somehow synonymous with the series, rest assured that the comedy world certainly has not heard the last of Michael McDonald.

Aug 5, 2009: Donnell Rawlings From Comedy Central's "The Chappelle Show" and HBO at DC Improv Comedy Club

Donnell Rawlings most notable roles include appearing in Chappelle's Show, as well as making a guest appearance in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2 and a cameo appearance in the music video for Jim Jones' We Fly High (Ballin' Remix).

He also hosted the third season of Chappelle's Show along with Charlie Murphy. His catch phrase from Chappelle's Show is "I'm rich, biaaaaach!" (which is played at the end of every episode as part of Dave Chappelle's vanity card) as well as yelling "Son!" at the end of each sentence. He also played the character Ashy Larry.

Rawlings learned to speak broken Korean while serving in the United States Air Force when he was stationed in South Korea. He demonstrates the language in the Chappelle's Show sketches "Player Hater's Ball" and "The Time Haters", the latter of which was featured in the "Failures" episode. Rawlings reprises his role as the hater "Beautiful", known for wearing a Jheri curl and a suit similar to ones that Little Richard has worn.

In the sketches, he responds to the comments of Korean hater "Mr. Roboto" with insults in Korean.

Rawlings also made an appearance on the HBO drama The Wire playing Damien Lavelle 'Day-Day' Price, an ex-convict who is hired as a legislative aide and driver for corrupt state senator Clay Davis. Price's character appears unrefined on several occasions contemplating heists in public and stating things in the court room such as "Y'all tryin' to 'criminate me" while on the stand. Davis coincidentally enough is played by Chappelle's Show co-star Isiah Whitlock Jr.

Rawlings stars in a series of sketch comedy clips portraying his character Ashy Larry, from Chappelle's Show, on heavy.com called "From Ashy to Classy". Ashy Larry dreams of how his life would be if he were classy, and dreams up a character who he calls Ashford Lawrence, a supposed reporter for heavy.com. Ashy Larry goes to different high class establishments posing as a reporter, where eventually his girl comes and pulls him out at the end of each clip.

In the Summer of 2007, Rawlings was featured on the cover of the one-year anniversary issue of Beyond Race magazine.

Rawlings was also a contestant in the Comedy Central show Reality Bites Back.

Currently, Rawlings appears in sketches on D.L. Hughley Breaks the News and in Howard Stern's Howard TV On Demand original series, Show in the Hallway.

Jul 9, 2009: Pablo Francisco from "MADtv" and Comedy Central at DC Improv Comedy Club

A Funny thing happens to audiences when they see Pablo Francisco live for the first time. In a matter of minutes, crowds go from the quiet response that often greets a relative unknown, to jolts of boisterous laughter and applause. What accounts for the transformation? Namely the 20-something Tucson native's ability to create vividly funny living pictures using strikingly authentic off-the-wall sound effects and loads of his own ample imagination. Pablo's send-up of grimly narrated action-movie previews, with Arnold Schwarzenegger as a tortilla vendor targeted by the mob, is one good example. Another is his hilarious spoofing of those intensely melodramatic Spanish language soap operas on the Telemundo Cable Network.

A lifelong comedy junkie, as kid Pablo competed with a friend to see who could video tape more comics from television. He got his first professional break at age 17, when he and his aforementioned buddy formed a duo called the "Blowout Boys," snuck into a local steakhouse and took honors in a comedy competition against older, but clearly inferior opponents. "A lot of them read their stuff from notes. At least we had memorized our material!"recalls Pablo.

From humble beginnings, big things have started to happen. In addition to his Comedy Central Presents half-hour special, Showtime s Full Frontal Comedy, Pablo was a Mad TV cast member (season 2). Pablo also has one of the top-selling comedy DVD s in the nation "Bits and Pieces." You can check Pablo out on Dish Network s SiTV, where he hosts Latino Laugh Festival: The Show. Pablo, now an L.A. resident, is busy distinguishing himself in top clubs around the country, among veteran comics who threw away the script years ago.
