Jan 1, 2010: Art on Purpose- Heroes in Our Midst at The Walters Art Museum

Inspired by the Walters Art Museum's Heroes exhibition and its emphasis on the myths of Herakles, Odysseus, Achilles and Helen, Art on Purpose presents Heroes in Our Midst, a project about modern-day Baltimore individuals who share attributes with the ancient Greek heroes highlighted in the Walters' exhibition. Art on Purpose, an organization dedicated to using art to bring people together around issues and ideas, presents a series of exhibitions and events in partnership with the Walters to explore, uncover and celebrate the lives of contemporary Baltimore heroes. The first exhibition, A Thousand Ships, on view Sept. 16 to Nov. 8, 2009, is based on the heroism of Helen of Troy and will celebrate 12 individuals in Baltimore public schools whose inherent charisma has had life-altering impact on those who come to know them. The second exhibition, Twenty Years of Wandering, on view from Nov. 11, 2009 to Jan. 3, 2010, is about the Odysseus-like heroism it takes for refugees, immigrants and the homeless to survive and thrive in Baltimore. It will feature artwork created by clients of several Baltimore social service organizations that serve the homeless and refugee populations.

Jan 23, 2010: Beauty and the Brain: A Neural Approach to Aesthetics at The Walters Art Museum

'Beauty and the Brain' is both an exhibition and an experiment. Visitors will be invited to explore aesthetic spaces created by digitally morphing original works of art. Subject areas include modern abstract sculptures by renowned 20th-century artist Jean Arp. Responses from participants will be used to analyze how 3-D shape characteristics define aesthetic preference. The results will form the basis for experiments measuring aesthetic responses in the human brain with functional magnetic resonance imaging.
Islamic art includes not only objects used in the service of religion but also those created for the courts of the Middle East and Central Asia, as well as articles used in everyday life, over a territory that at its height stretched from present-day Spain and North Africa westward to India. The museum's holdings reflect the cultural diversity and geographical range of Islamic cultures.

Jan 1, 2010: 18th and 19th Century Art at The Walters Art Museum

The Walters' collection presents an overview of 19th century European art, particularly art from France. From the first half of the century, come major paintings by Ingres, Gericault and Delacroix. As a result of his stay in Paris with his family during the Civil War, William Walters developed a keen interest in contemporary European painting. He either commissioned directly from the artists or purchased at auctions major works by the Barbizon masters, including Millet and Rousseau, the academic masters Gerome and Alma-Tadema, and the modernists Monet, Manet, and Sisley.

Jan 2, 2010: Asian Art at The Walters Art Museum

The Walters Art Museum displays more than 1,000 works of Asian art, including works from China, Japan, Korea, India and Southeast Asia. Highlights of the Asian art collection assembled by William and Henry Walters include Japanese arms and armor, Chinese and Japanese porcelains, lacquers and metalwork. Among the museum's outstanding works of Asian art is a late 12th or early 13th century Cambodian bronze of the eight-armed Avalokiteshvara, a T'ang Dynasty earthenware camel given as a tomb offering to accompany the soul of the deceased, and an intricately painted Ming Dynasty wine jar most likely made for the wedding of a prominent 16th century couple. The museum owns the oldest surviving Chinese wood-and-lacquer image of the Buddha (late 6th century AD), which is exhibited in a gallery dedicated solely to this work.
