Jan 21, 2010: Yahoo!'s Christian Crumlish on Social Design Patterns at newthinking store

The interaction design patterns shared in the Pattern Library on the Yahoo! Developer Network represent lessons learned by Yahoo! user experience designers and front-end developers, seasoned with insights from expert practitioners all over the world. Yahoo! uses design patterns and network components to promote consistency where it makes sense, to raise the bar for design across the web, and to free up creative people to invent new solutions instead of spinning their wheels, reinventing old ones.

Over the past two years, Yahoo! Design Pattern library curator Christian Crumlish has been assembling a collection of *social* design patterns to help web makers understand the shifting sands of social design. Designing for social interaction is hard. People are unpredictable, consistency is a mixed blessing, and co-creation with your users requires a dizzying flirtation with loss of control.

In this talk, Christian will use his expertise to illustrate the principles of social web design with a deep dive into interaction patterns, design principles, and anti-patterns (familiar but broken solutions that seem like a good idea at the time).
