    <title>Nov 12, 2009: Photography - the First 100 Years: A Survey From the DIA&#39;s Collection at Detroit Institute of Arts</title>
    <description><![CDATA[This historical survey of photographs from roughly the early 1840s to 1940 is taken from the DIA&#39;s outstanding photography collection. The exhibition includes many well-known works from the medium&#39;s history by both European and American photographers, including iconic images by Julia Margaret Cameron, Hill and Adamson, Lewis Hine, Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Alfred Stieglitz, Paul Strand, and Edward Weston. An overview of photographic techniques including rare early 19th-century photographs as well as works representative of the aesthetic evolution of the medium including pictorialism, modernism, and the documentary tradition will also be on view.<br />

    <description><![CDATA[With the advent of video as an art form, artists began to capture the fleeting interval between an action and its effect. As time-based work evolved, art was no longer confined to the tradition of stop-action records used by painting and sculpture. &#39;Action &lt; &gt; Reaction&#39; highlights five videos that examine this causal relationship and document the evolution of video over four decades. Artists include Bruce Nauman, Ana Mendieta, Peter Fischli, David Weiss and Bill Viola.<br />
