I am a Retired previously certified child care trainer/instructor, who specializes in teaching the “Adult Learner” and child care eduactors. In my classes I had older students (50 years old and up)as well as younger students. Some of my homework assignments required them to use the computer. I noticed that the majority of my older students were not familiar with computers and could not complete their assignments. When it was brought to my attention I started working one-on-one with those students. Now that I have retired I can focus entirely on my passion for computers and more specifically I can focus on teaching "Seniors To Learn Computers". Since I am a senior I understand the issues seniors have with computers. Some think they are too old, some think it will be too hard to learn and some are ashamed none of which is correct.
I think once seniors understand that computers can open up a whole new world for them they will be so happy. Computers allow us to stay in contact with family and friends that are not close by or very far away through email. They can research information on topics they have always wanted to know more about. They can pay bills on-line, shop online, have groceries delivered if they can not get out. Computers offer seniors endless options. From a medical point computers stimulate the brain and ward off dementia and the decline in cognitive learning. I think teaching seniors to learn computers should be made fun and have them wanting to learn more. My schedule allows me to teach one-on-one classes or a SMALL group.
