210 S.W. Morrison
Portland, Oregon
United States
(503) 796-BREW
Description:
- Beer:
Five house brews, four from CO2 taps, one from a nitrous tap (usually the stout), and one or two may also be cask-conditioned and served from hand-pumps. All beers are top-fermented ales, including Coyote Western Ale, White Pelican American Pale (not a Belgian-style white beer!), Falcon Red, Big Horn Nut Brown, and Black Seal Stout. One consistent quality of Rock Bottom's beers seems to be that they are all a bit on the light side, perhaps reflecting the somewhat homogenized standards of a brewpub chain with operations in major cities across the USA.
- Food:
Fine range of bistro food, in some cases several notches up from standard tavern fare, and served in generous portions, including appetizers, soups and salads, and several bountiful pasta dishes. Dinner fare adds substantial main-course entrees. Prices, however, are not at the same low-to-moderate level as, say, the McMenamins places.
- Atmosphere:
Relentlessly, annoyingly, 20-something yuppie at weekends, with a line out the door to get into the bar, and a volume level at the pain threshold. Much nicer at a quiet weekend lunch break or earlier in the week, say on a Sunday or Monday evening. After about 8 PM Wednesday through Saturday, though, avoid unless packed bars full of lookalike folks that stepped out of single demographic mass is your idea of a great time. The dining room, however, is a reasonble alternative, if reservations have been made. The Rock Bottom chain also runs the Old Chicago pizza restaurant and pub at the suburban southeastern edge of suburban Portland. There is also a Rock Bottom web page now, and it gives a good feel as to the overall philosophy of this highly successful chain. And for those of you who are Seattle- bound, there are also Rock Bottoms in Seattle and Bellevue.
- Smoking Policy:
No smoking in the dining room; smoking allowed in the bar
- Happy Hour, Specials:
- Special Events:
Live music at weekends, from a stage above the entryway
- Parking:
Metered on-street and pay lots only. Pub is in busy urban core area, with limitations on available parking. For people coming in from eastern Portland, though, there is an excellent alternative: the MAX tram stops right outside, on Morrison.
