Description:
Galapagos Art and Performance Space is located in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, between Kent and Wythe Streets.
Blessed by a culturally literate audience of over 4000 resident area artists, Galapagos is housed in an old mayonnaise factory. The installed ambience has been designed to overlay subtle and immersive sensual elements within the template of an old Brooklyn factory. These elements are designed to facilitate its more modern use as a social focal point and gathering spot for the neighborhood of artists that resides here.
We note our special regard to supporting the communicative desire of the audience within the space and the respect afforded their desire for conversation.
Cumulatively, their resulting experience is based on the sensuality of the ambience we have, the performance environment that we create and the work we produce. And we like kissing.
Galapagos does not seek or accept grants or public funding of any kind so that we are forced to support ourselves through our ambience and our programming. If our installed ambience is excellent, if the work we present is effective and communicative, and if we communicate by leadership on these points within our community then the audience will come to support this space. If the sum of what we do is not these things then the audience will not support us.
There should be no other basis for our existence. We believe that we are a space that leads by example with regard to its self-supporting mechanisms and its focus both on the quality of its ambient aesthetics and the strength of the work it produces. We hope that it's true.
These are the key points and animation of the design of both the social and performative environments. We hope it results in a rich soup we can all swim in. A dash of vigor, a cup of sensuality, a stock of communicative passion. All combined, we eat well. And we like to kiss.
We seek to imbue social-space design in New York City with a new invigoration and respect for the audience's experience. I am constantly amazed that in a world capital such as New York the quality of social-spaces one can go to is extremely poor. Black box theaters, black box nightspots. It's New York after all! One should be able to go to any number of extraordinary, lush and creatively sensual spaces and be fed the delights of the beautiful cultural and social meals.
