Description:
Driving by this dingy brick edifice off busy Fairbanks Avenue, you'd think it'd be selling house paint or car parts, not the finest organic beverages in the city. With its hand-painted chairs and tables, surreal murals, original artwork and multicolored checkerboard tile floor, owner Joe Royall has transformed the weathered structure into one of the coolest hangouts in town. Hipsters and college students pour in to take in the laid-back bohemian vibe, and to savor the freshly brewed organic coffees from Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Papua New Guinea and Sumatra. Tea-lovers will delight in the aromatically seasoned ruby chai or a refreshing cup of Moroccan mint. There's even an assortment of organic beer on sale for $3. A couple of TVs air flicks from the Independent Film Channel, though they're soundly turned off when live music and comedy acts take center stage on weekends. Poets and writers sound off on Sundays, with live painting on Wednesdays and Open Mic nights Tuesdays and Thursdays. Film nights are being planned, though for now, the grindhouse is buying used DVDs in exchange for cash. -- Faiyaz Kara, AOL CityGuide
